"Better" is all relative...what does your wife use her computer for?

Both are good SATA SSDs.  Samsung 850 Evo is faster than the Crucial MX500 (read/write speed) ... that said, is your wife an enthusiast who would notice the speed difference (average users won't notice the speed difference between these two SSDs).  Crucial is best bang-for-the-buck value vs Samsung's better high-end performance.  If your wife's a gamer or uses intensive apps (like video editing), then I recommend going with Samsung SSD ... if this is a more a general purpose computer, then go with Crucial.

Also, have you considered Samsung 860 Evo (500GB)?  It's the newer version that supercedes the 850 Evo and is available for $149 price point:

Review about the 860 Evo:  https://www.pcgamer.com/samsung-860-evo-review/

If you can get 850 Evo for $129, then that may be the better deal (saves $20) for you if you go with Samsung and they have comparable performance.

A good article comparing SSDs:  https://www.pcgamer.com/the-best-ssd-for-gaming/

BTW, can your wife's computer support M.2 NVMe SSD?

Probably crucial. I'd get an Intel drive though if you're worried about data integrity. Samsung drives have been known to fail without warning. At least you'll receive a warning from an Intel ssd before it dies, and you'll have plenty of time to backup your data as the drive will enter a read only state before complete failure.

Sounds good if I can find an Intel 500gb ssd for $129.

Samsung imho; the 2.5" 850 EVO 500GB was good for me for years until I went to m.2 (even better). My wife has an 850 EVO on her desktop - still going strong (along with a 2TB Caviar Black for storage). Intel used to be pretty good a few years back, but then they started doing a lot of mass produced budget models (and budget performance). Crucial I've tried - it died on me. Tried OCZ years ago too - they were complete crap lol.

I had a Crucial for a year but it failed so I bought a Toshiba OCZ Trion 150 960GB in a panic at Microcenter while waiting for the Crucial RMA and it's been holding its own for quite some time. I have decided to get an Intel and see what happens (I am keeping my wife's old drive just in case things go south) I ordered it last night from Newegg and it showed up today at my doorstep.  Thanks for all the help guys.

Awesome, let us know how it goes - Intel would be my next choice after Samsung, and they used to be my number 1 choice - their more recent models might be very good, I haven't checked them out.

Enjoying the snow? The weight of it took out part of a big tree on our block and it fell right across the road, and on someone's jeep. This morning walking my daughter to the school bus I was yelling at some guy for driving the wrong way (one way street) - then I saw the tree across the road further down.. oops.

This snow sucks, I was shoveling at 5:30am before work. The snow and sleet was so heavy it weighed the cable lines down and a back hoe driving down the next block tore some down. I hope this it the end of these storms.

Thankfully at this point and time, pretty much any modern SSD is good enough for consumers. Intel's 760p is a good alternative to Samsung's 960 EVO. I don't have much experience with Crucial except for their RAM back in the day, but I'm sure they are reliable as well.

    +1.

My first SSD was a standard 250GB Samsung 840.  It's been in use since Aug. 2013.  It's had many fresh OS installs on it and the past couple years has been a game drive.  Lots of big game uninstalls and new installs.  Still puts out the same performance numbers today as it did new...

Still using all Samsungs today on all builds I do for anyone.  Not one complaint or failure.  Many in use for several years.

i have had good experiences with both, they both make their own nand chips but i dont think crucial (micron) has its own controller chips, never the less i think you would be fine with either one.

sandisk drives are just rebadged western digital drives, so hard to tell what nand chips they are using at any given time.

Actually it is just the opposite. Sandisk was making SSDs long before Western Digital bought Sandisk.

but still holds true that they use different nand chips and controllers, mostly skhyink but some micron and samsung chips as well.

ive had great experiences with both samsung and crucial ssds. i would have no qualms at all buying either one of those ssds. speed is a non factor imo. youll rarely if ever notice a difference. the read/write performance is essentially the same and both have 5yr warranties. tough choice!

Samsung makes arguably THE BEST SSDs on the market - very high to highest performance, and very good to industry-leading lifetime.

Now that vorsholk has stopped his abuse, I'm returning to folding.
I no longer MOO due to abuses by certain "whales" in the Gridcoin community - so I now work the Distributed.net project directly again.

    How about Sandisk?

sandisk drives are just rebadged western digital drives, so hard to tell what nand chips they are using at any given time.

Actually it is just the opposite. Sandisk was making SSDs long before Western Digital bought Sandisk.

Sandisk was making flash memory many years before anyone else that is still around except Intel (first commercial products made) and Toshiba (original inventor) - which would be WHY Western Digital bought them out.
They were at one time the #1 producer of flash memory, think they've slipped a bit though with increasing competition in the market they largely MADE.

I have to agree with the Intel drives being good about data integrity. It's what I normally go for with SSD since I don't care as much about having the fastest but more of the most reliable. It's also not like I have been waiting for things to open anyway so speed isn't that important to me. When you get to a point that a drive is faster in a benchmark that equal blinks of the eye I would pick reliability over speed personally.

Hard to beat Intel enterprises class drives for long life, not sure which nand chips they use though on those. On my Intel 600p nvme they used micron chips ( crucial ) they may not the fastest ones out there but you know they will last.

I wound up getting an Intel drive for my wife https://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16820167429&ignorebbr=1&nm_mc=AFC-C8Junction&cm_mmc=AFC-C8Junction-PCPartPicker,%20LLC-_-na-_-na-_-na&cm_sp=&AID=10446076&PID=3938566&SID=  so far so good.  I myself have a Toshiba OCZ Trion 150 960GB and my son has my Crucial RMA. Everything seems to be running well (crosses fingers)
