Hey everyone, hope you guys are having a good Friday.

So this is the first time I ever built my own rig and things went pretty smoothly with the hardware installation, I had a veteran PC building friend help me out to make sure that everything was seated and cabled properly. I installed Win7 Home Edition (OEM) pretty smoothly as well.

So this is where things started to get weird. Upon turning on the PC for the first time I immediately notices red spots/dots speckled all over the black and white start up screens you get as well as the windows start up screen and on my desktop (the go away and move around when I mouse over them). At first I thought it might not be a big deal and will clear up once I get all the video drivers and etc installed. I was so very wrong.

Basically from that point on I set up my Win7 stuff and decide to install the video card drivers and immediately problems occur. Upon installing the new drivers and restarting, my computer BSOD’ed on me. I couldn’t catch the entire error but these were the 2 things I got from it. The error was related to nvlddmkm.sys and the other piece I caught was 0x00000116 (after a quick Google search it was linked to possible faulty video card RAM). Also side note: Aside from BSODing sometimes the PC will turn on and just hang at a black screen and a few times I got a white screen with scrambled colors on it.

After this occurred I thought it might have been some kinda error on my part so I reformatted and tried it all over again and the same thing occurred. The only way out of this BSOD was to log in in safe mode and delete that .sys file or add a .old at the end of it. I really tried everything I could, I tried using the driver discs, the drivers on the website, reformatting, safemode, I tried reseating the video card and trying the other slots as well as checking to make sure that everything is properly connected… The other noteworthy thing I noticed was in device manager there was a yellow ! near the video card and it said something along the lines of the drivers are corrupted or missing and then it said (code 39).

Oops. My post got cut in 1/2 Here is the rest:

For now I think Im going to get the card swapped out at newegg. I did countless google searches and some forum searches and it seems that those people that have this issue really didn’t have a resolution (PLEASE point me to one, if I’m wrong about this). I called EVGA and the guy just sounded like he wanted me to get of the phone faster and really didn’t have an answer.

I guess my concern is this happening again with a new 470. Seems like this driver issue is something that’s been around for a bit with vista and win7.

I also want to rule out any other problem it might be. Could it be any other hardware parts causing this?
P.S. Unfortunately since this is my first self built rig, I don’t have another video card to test out in the system

This is basically whats in my system: http://secure.newegg.com/WishList/PublicWishDetail.aspx?WishListNumber=19541648

    Thanks

Hmmm... I'll give it a shot when I get home from work. I'm just wondering though, what does that have to do with the BSODs?

Try a simple test. Does your MB have intergrated video? if so is there still problem with the BSOD and other issues? if you dont have intergrated video put a different video card in and see if you get the same problems. If you do then I would have to say your Motherboard is at fault.

Does the guy who helped you have an extra video card? or you could put your video card into his pc and see if it has the same problems? The best way to fix computers is by process of elimination. Hope you get it figured out.

You can check if you have intergrated video in the BIOS ***EDIT*** just checked your mother board and you do NOT have intergrated video.

Just a word of advice: If you have tried to reinstall the 260.89 drivers make sure you uninstalled them, then used Driver sweeper (free program) then reinstall. If you didn't this could add to the problem.

Also check device manager and see if there are any errors there. You did install the motherboard drivers? all the chip set drivers? and so on?

My last PC was BSOD and wouldn't let me install new hardware and it turned out to be a bad Mother board.

I uninstalled all the nvidia drivers and did a fresh reinstall of them and upon restarting my PC... It just BSOD's on me. It's so weird. The only way I can get out of the blue screen is if I boot up in safe mode and change nvlddmkm.sys to nvlddmkm.sys.old

Also, I just put this rig together 2 days ago and even when I tried doing the mobo drivers first, it still did the same thing. I reformatted several times as well.

The reason why I'm leaning towards dying card is because of these weird spots all over the screen, all the start up screens and then on my desktop. I took a fuzzy cellphone pic of it yesterday but idk if that will help. Like I read other people having the same issue but no one ever mentioned having the weird fragmented/artifact looking things.

I just got a new asus monitor too. When I hook it up to my laptop with the same cable, it's flawless, not a single issue so I ruled out that being a problem.

If your not using driver sweeper then that is a big part of the problem. You also have to not only uninstall the display drivers but the Nvidia HD audio drivers, the Physx drivers, reboot, run driver sweeper, reboot, then reinstall 260.89 drivers.
    http://www.guru3d.com/category/driversweeper/

You should also call EVGA support and have then walk you through the proper way to reinstall drivers for your video card.

Get your drivers from here http://www.nvidia.com/Download/index.aspx?lang=en-us Make sure your downlaoding the correct drivers (32bit for 32 bit OS, 64bit for 64bit OS) if your not sure have EVGA support help you.

One last thing! lol ..... You should add your Systems specs to your signature like dunkinkid22 and I have. It makes it easier for people to help you. You can add that info in the USERCP at the top of the forums.

I experienced a similar issue GTX 260, so this may be helpful to you.  The problem was that the 2d clock speeds were too low when the card ran in low power mode.  So, I overclocked the 2d clockspeeds (specifically the RAM) by a 100 mhz or so, then my BSOD's related to the nyvyxxxx.sys went away.

May be worth trying, though I would try the other suggested fixes first.  You'll need to use rivatuner to do it, if you're unsure how just ask on here for help.

This sounds similar to the problem I am having with my GTX470 SC, except I am getting artifacts when starting Windows, even after a reformat and fresh install. I made a thread about it when it started happening on Tuesday, but have yet to find a solution.

I had a really hard time trying most of these suggestions just because the BSOD's wouldn't stop. VERY frustrating I'm basically biting the bullet right now and RMAing this card. A friend of mine is going to let me try his GTX 285 sometime today just to make sure it's the video card and not anything else.

Side note: I'm using the right 64 bit drivers for Win7. I triple check that kinda stuff usually. And here is a picture of what I see on my screen both on start up screens + My desktop: (Sorry, it's fuzzy but you can see what I'm talking about, this is also on my desktop in various colors)

Quick update: It WAS a defected gtx 470 for sure. My friend brought over his spare 285 and it works like a charm. Everything is fine. I'm currently gonna use this card and RMA the 470 and cross my fingers for better luck.

Glad to hear you solved the issue!  In that pic it definitely looks like your card bit the dust.  I had an old 8800GTS card that started doing that after awhile.  That sucks you got a bad one right out of the box though.

EVGA GTX 580 3GB  (with another on the way!)

            Coolermaster HAF X Case

(Work Rig Identical, but w/  EVGA GTS250 GFX card, 80GB X-25M G2 and HAF922 case)

Man, now I am starting to get this error message.   I was in the middle of playing Mafia 2 when my system froze.  After the reboot, I checked the minidump and sure enough...I have been dealing with black screen issues since the beginning.  I followed dunkinkid's steps to disable the hd audio devices, and it seemed to work for awhile.  Now I seem to be going through the same problems again (black screen, freezing at login, etc).  I am on teh 260.89 drivers (installed after using driver sweeper).  The only thing i dont have is artifacts.  Do you think I should just bite the bullet and RMA my cards?  I am going to start running them one at a time to see if I can find the problem card.  BTW, here is a snippet from my minidump:

Good deal! Swapping out hard ware is the best way to trouble shoot computer issues like this and can save you days of banging your head against a wall trying this and that when a simple hardware swap will point you in the right direction. That is why I always keep my old hardware.

Hope this is a lesson learned do not buy computer hardware from Ebay :)
