Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100% 2017/06/12 11:00:00 (permalink)
I originally purchased my first 1080 FTW in September of 2016, was having the issue within a week of getting it. RMA'ed it, and got a new card then was deployed overseas before I had an opportunity to test it. Now I'm back and my RMA card is having the same exact issue. Can play BF1, BDO, Fallout 4, GTAV, DOOM, Overwatch with no issues whatsoever for hours on end, however as soon as I start Warframe or Men of Honor I have about 5-25 mins before I get the black screen with "No Input Detected" and fans wind up to 100%. Audio still works fine, game running in background as I can hear it.

I reformatted and installed fresh W10 less than a week ago, so everything is completely fresh.

Messaged tech support and they told me to test the card in another system to rule out everything else - Have tested it with my buddies old 960 with 0 issues (he is on AMD now so I will not make him go through the trouble of letting me test my card in his system when I KNOW its the card).

They also suggested that I use DDU to remove my drivers and reinstall (on a literally less than week old fresh format)

They also suggested it could be my PSU causing the problem (Its not) and to check that its operating within 11.5-12.5 (it is), running a 1200W Corsair HXI so I have plenty of power to push.

It bothers me that such an expensive (used to be) card that has so many people posting the exact same issues is being doubted on whether its faulty or not.

I can tell you with full confidence that it is an issue in the card. I can play BF1 for 6 hours straight on ultra without an ounce of trouble - I boot up 5 year old men of war or warframe and the card craps out in less than 10 minutes.

I had the issue before and OC'ing using the stock voltage kinda solved the problem. I actually stopped using the OC recently, but it was stable in like every game I played for hours. However, I recently started playing Mass Effect Andromeda and the problem is back with stock clocks. I will try to install the thermal pads that I kinda ignored for months; I doubt they will solve the issue.

It only happens on Andromeda with stock clocks. It could be the GPU load being at 99% most of the time. Either way, my card is almost a year old. I can't wait to replace it with something that is not malfunctioning right out of the box.

Specs:
GPU: GTX 1080 FTW
CPU: i7 8700k @4.9GHz
RAM: 2x8GB 3200MHz
PSU: Corsair RM750i
OS: Windows 10 64-bit

The thermal pads update won't solve the issue (I had the problem, and did the update, but without any difference, just a little bit better temps). Since It's a hardware problem, only the RMA will solve the problem.
The card I received from the RMA worked beatifully, without any coil whines, or any kind of issues, AND, with the Thermal Pads installed as well (1080 FTW).

Im having an issue your talking about except I was running two 670's FTW with my new 1070 FTW to try and get monitor surround and the 670's freaked out and the fans started to spin up 110% & the screens would randomly go black I think it had something to do with running  direct X 11 & 12 together or maybe I corrupted the bios. Im still trying to figure it out my 1070 runs fine my 2 X 670 are spinning up all the time now I had a 3rd 670 that I didnt mix with the 1070 it runs normal in another system I will be watching this forum its good to know Im not the only one having this problem I thought I was alone If I figure out a fix before someone else I will post it to this forum thanks guys.

Just an update for anyone currently going through this process, or anyone who has any thought of dealing with EVGA's "excellent" customer support in the future.

I currently have my third 1080FTW in my computer, which not surprisingly fails in the exact same manner as the previous 2, and once again the representatives over at EVGA are suggesting an RMA. However my rep was kind enough to ensure me that this time they will do "extended testing to ensure you don't receive another card with this issue." Apparently there are varying levels of testing whether a card works or not, and on a card that has known issues they dont test them, they just pack them up and ship them back out hoping the next guy wont ever notice there are issues with the card.

I have asked to get a different card (I will pay the difference) which they will not do because of their "strict" RMA policy (which apparently involves sending broken cards out over and over again) and at this point it looks as if I will be playing these stupid games with them for the next year or so until they run out of broken 1080's to send me, and are finally forced to move me to another card.

At this point I am completely fed up with this company as a whole - I would assume after you have screwed somebody 3 times in a row with a broken 800 dollar card that keeps them from doing what they want to do with it that you would suck it up and send them a working product, but apparently EVGA doesnt seem to have a firm grasp on what customer service is.

This is my experience in a nutshell:

Original 1080FTW purchased 10SEP16 759.99
First card began failing immediately on specific games - RMA requested, RMA recieved end of OCT
Work had me gone for a month training all of NOV
Deployed to Iraq DEC
Come back JUN2017 - RMA finally tested, crashing exact same issue, request another RMA except this time I have to pay out of pocket for the RMA because military service doesnt matter to EVGA
JUL2017 RMA arrives, exact same issue, tested in another machine, exact same issue, request different card, RMA is suggested but this time they will do "extended" testing (lol right)

As soon as I get an opportunity to recoup my losses and go with another company I will gladly leave this one behind.

Mine was having the same issue, bought it in September 2016.  Got it RMA'd and everything was fine right up until tonight.  Same issue as before, any game I launch crashes within seconds once any graphics are going.  Sent an email, hopefully they can RMA me another one.

Am I an idiot for buying a Refurbished model from Newegg a couple days ago? Apparently I am.

The card lasts 5 seconds in a benchmark, game, and graphically intensive. 5 SECONDS before going black screen with 100% fan speed.

same with my sept/16 1080 FTW aCX(v1.00) blank screen n fans, fitted the pads, did the bios and got the power thingy and all was well, but decided to fit a EKblock just to be safe and because i could and not had any problems with it since(touch wood), it clocks better than my than my second april/17 1080 FTW aCX(v1.01) which also has EKblock fitted, the sept/16 has a different bios chip than the april/17 card if i remember rightly and i don't use the power thing anymore.

i might update this tomorrow

register the card and uptoad the receipt

go here https://www.evga.com/thermalmod/

see if you need pads or just request a RMA, refurbishment or not it will have a 2yr manufactures warranty against defects, EVGA are really good and respond very well to requests for help

and don't so hard on yourself

This guy said it all.

If a RMA is possible with EVGA, so request it.
Most probably they're going to send one without any problems.

I have a 'Black screen & fans spin up to 100%' problem also with my EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC Gaming 6GB purchased in August 2016.
Can anyone confirm that the issue described here also exists for the 1060? Because looking through the thread I only see 1080 mentioned.

I've had this with my GTX 1070. It did it once and I had to cut the power. Didn't think anything of it. Then the screen started going blank more frequently but without the fans spinning up, but it would correct itself. Yesterday it went blank and fans went wild. After turning off and back on, it seems to be totally dead. The system won't power up, so long as the card is connected to the psu. Been told I need to RMA. Found this thread whilst trying to find out what the cause is and if it's likely to be a problem after the card is fixed or replaced.

New to the forums and unfortunately got the Black Screen + Fans 100% problem but just wondering can you get a RMA through EVGA if you purchased a 1080 through amazon?

Should be able to. you need to register the card and I would upload a copy of the invoice as they will want it when doing the RMA anyways.. file for an rma afterwards, or call them.

Why would it be pointless? Either you have a product with a warranty or you do not.

I've been reading that people are still experiencing problems with their second or third Card, even though they have went through almost every troubleshoot like updating the bios or changing out hardware parts. So it may be pointless to do an RMA return if i encounter the same issue

This specific issue has been resolved (100% fans spinning and black screen).
It might happen again? Of course. It's not 100% since it can come with hardware failure from factory.

What some people are experiencing, with the same issues (black screen + fans ramping up) was, and usually is, a stable PSU delivery problem on the GPU.
90% of the other causes I saw here, with these same issues, were PSU problems. Very few of them were the GPU itself.

I'm on my second card and it does the same thing (NEVER OC'd, have Coolmax 1000w, 2x6+2 to make 8 pin connectors to the 1080 card, [never use the included 2 6 pins to 1 8 pin] no issue with my 780) but here's the weird part; It will black screen/no signal, i'll have to hard boot the system, and this will repeat 3 or 4 times sometimes more, all within the 5-15 minute window, then after about an hour of dealing with it, smooth sailing... It's the weirdest thing. after anywhere from 3 to 6 blackscreen/hard boots, it will run ARK/FarCryPrimal/Dishonored2/NoMansSky no issues for the rest of the evening. Its ONLY after first starting it.

I went through the first week troubleshooting daily trying to figure out and i had a whole list for EVGA Tech Support, to the point that they didn't even have me try anything extra, they just gave me the ticket number to start the RMA process. I even pulled the card and put it in my sisters computer and had the same issues.

That being said, the original card, when it blackscreen'd the fans spun up to 100%. The difference with the RMA replacement card is that when it blackscreens, the fans stay the current speed. Not sure whats different, or if maybe this card is even worse off but after submitting this post im turning in another ticket with EVGA Support. I spent a week meticulously checking various compatibility websites and forums prior to purchasing the card to make absolutely sure before i spent $650 on a single piece of hardware. I'd really like to get this fixed, to pinpoint the issue at the very least. I saw on another forum for a different card to try downclocking the core clock and mem clock 30-or-so Mhz so i'm going to try that using XOC but after the weeks of troubleshooting, viewing hundreds of forum pages, and an RMA, plus going through blackscreening/hard booting every single friggin' time i sit down to play a bit, i'm running out of steam.

Hmmmm.
That's odd.
If it's black screeing,  but the fans are not ramping up, then the GPU might be factory faulty as well (not the original issue on this thread, but something different).

Welp Facing the same problem. Got the card 2 months ago. It started a week ago. It feels like happens once every few hours.

I have today just discovered this issue after months of troubleshooting. My 1st card completely died, magic blue smoke died! I RMA'd it and was then left without a card for 4 weeks.

I got the replacement, and had a few crashes but just figured I had lost the OC lottery and down tuned my OC, but the crashes kept happening. I troubleshooted my PC, clean install, etc. But the issue is playing a game, suddenly black screen and 100% fans, can hear the PC, such as discord or the game, but monitor says "no signal". So this fault is still present in RMA stock in 2018, I await EVGA's response, but I am a very unhappy customer.

I have been rocking sli Titans for the last few years on a custom water loop and it seems to me that a few iterations of nvidia drivers back seems to be when I started having random black screen issues... I tend to think it has something to do with these latest drivers?
