Do we know if the FTWs have the same PCB as the 1080 ACX standard?

They don't. They have the reference design.

3 week old build, ran through the benches (3D mark, Unigine) fine, but is crashing on Civ 6 after about 30 minutes of play. Black screen + fan at 100% At first I though it was a CPU issue, but after the 2nd crash, it was clear it was the GPU as I could hear the music and my menu selections still going through. Is RMA my only option or should i pull back my OC? Current offset is +105 Memory +300

Try debug mode and see if you can still run the game. If it runs fine within debug mode, then it's not a overheat issue, but an unstable overclock.

Debug mode fixes the black screen issue for whatever reason. Doesn't mean the card itself doesn't have a hardware fault, however.

There should be a sticky or something else for this thread; I'm curious to know where these faulty cards are continuing to be sold? People should post date, merchant, and country of purchase for their FTW cards. If you guys having problems JUST bought the card, that is messed up and EVGA should have just halted sales altogether. Others may have bought the card months ago and the problem just started to happen. It would be helpful to know when people bought their faulty cards.

Debug mode is designed to drop your clock speeds to the reference clock speed of a graphics card family. The purpose of Debug mode is precisely to disable overclocks and factory overclocks, so, yes, you should lose your OC if it's working properly.

midlan Hey guys, you who recieved the card from EVGA RMA. I have question to you, does your card have coil whine issiue? I have 2nd card and both have the black screen problem and pretty noisy coil whine. First I returned to the seller and get this seccond. The black screen problem is still present but not as much on the 1st card. With 1st card I had instant freeze in Crysis every time in 1st mission after fell into water. With the second card I am getting freezes at 3rd savepoint I think, at the GPS jammer. I think the crashes mostly occurs in scenes with watter.
My original card didn't have any coil whine, my RMA has insane coil whine when FPS goes over 60.

Without a problem you say? I think an €800 GPU that needs to run in debug mode downclocked to have no issues is a huge problem right there.

No guarantees new one will fix anything, RMA'd 1080 FTW's seem to have the exact same issue after just one month, and there's little guidance and no official comment as to what I should do, will it be fixed? is it an isolated case? ¯\_(ツ)_/¯

Played Civ6 for a good 5 hours (2x 2.5hour sessions) w/ Xsplit running and recording for extra load Ran unigine valley for about 30 mins (though it never crashed with this before) I haven't had an EVGA card since the GTX260 so my question is, if it's stable now (obviously will look at it some more over the weekend) is my GTX 1080 FTW card likely not part of the defective batch? Put differently, is the black screen + fan 100% a 'feature' of EVGA cards when it is having issues and not specific to this one hardware issue? (ie: it could happen also due to bad overclocks, power connectors being a bit loose etc) Thanks.

You're right, it doesn't. But it goes right back to the exact issues that the 980FTW had - the same issues. The 980FTW would freeze and crash the drivers, because the clocks were too high. EVGA had to fix a major issues on it, and there were massive RMAs on the GPU. This is not a overheat issue. You don't see any non FTWs crying, but only FTWs. You rarely see people with the SC models complaining, but it's not as much as the FTW.

No black screen here. Some games did crash, but AC and Witcher 2 are generally known to crash. I never lost display, only crash to desktop. I would like to test/provide feedback. If you guys want me to test anything, try a game or different setting, shoot! Things I played since I got a 1080 AC:3* AC:Black Flag* Witcher 2* BF1 beta Dota 2 Rocket League 20 loops 3Dmark firestrike stress test 100% gpu load. It failed stability test when case fans were silent. Passed with 98.7% when case fans were set to turbo, It did throttle, hitting the 82 C mark but kept working. * Long sittings Rev. A1, BIOS ver. 86.04.17.00.80, Micron memory, Serial 16125, Packaged in USA. Extra info: Ambient 25 to 28 C. Case cooling (4 noctua fans) set to asus's "silent" when I played the above games. Windows 10 Pro, build 1607 Nvidia driver 373.06 (applies to 3Dmark tests only , games played on previous driver versions) Nvidia Crapforce experience 3.0 uninstalled.

I made a thread previously about this issue: http://forums.evga.com/Black-screen-and-fan-going-100-while-running-a-game-m2521839.aspx The overclock is the main culprit (obviously since a lot of people have no issues with debug mode). In my case, I had the issue very early on when I was overclocking the card. At first, I had freezes and driver crashes like any normal GPU would on an unstable overclock, but after some time (when I OC'd the CPU further), I had the black screen+fan issue; it kinda confused me because it happened at an awkward time when I OC'd other components. After some trial and error, and some downclocking of CPU/RAM, it turns out it was the 1080 FTW. Right now, the card is okay. I don't get the issue as often as I used to, but it happened in TW3 once after a long session. I downclocked the GPU further and it is running fine now, but I haven't done any long sessions in a while and the issue happens in certain games like TW3--a GPU extensive game that raises the temps of every card I had. I honestly don't know what to do; I had a panic attack when the issue first happened. RMA'ing the card is kinda a difficult last-resort option (imported card and time restraints). I might sell it (if someone will buy it in the first place) and get a 1080ti in the future.

(ie: it could happen also due to bad overclocks, power connectors being a bit loose etc) Thanks.
Don't quote me on this but from reading around it seems that some EVGA GTX 1080 FTW cards have an issue which means that the VRMs and VRAM are not being cooled properly and so are getting very hot. This is what is apparently causing the black screen and the fans to ramp up to 100% (a preventative measure to stop the card from being damaged or, worst, catching fire). A few websites have done testing (these are referred to in this thread, including links) and revealed that those areas are hotspots with alarmingly high temperatures. One I looked at measured the VRAM at 94.7 C and the Micron GDDR5X memory is only rated to 95 C! Whether this is just a production line fault on a number of cards or a design flaw of all the EVGA GTX 1080 FTW cards, I obviously cannot say as I can only comment on my experience. However, the fact remains that there are a number of GTX 1080 FTW cards out there with this issue. For me, the black screen issue pretty much started a week or so after switching from a custom fan profile in MSI Afterburner to using the default one, which spins the fans only once the GPU core reaches 65 C. I did initially have a couple of black screens in the first week of testing the card but that was likely while I was using the default fan profile. With the custom profile I was able to use my card for 6 weeks or so without the black screen. I switched the default one a few weeks back due to see how effective it was then a week or so later I started getting random black screens in a number of intensive games (Mafia 3, Forza Horizon 3, Gears of War 4, etc.). When I switched back to using the custom fan profile while I waited for the replacement card to arrive, I found that I was able to play games fine and without seeing the black screen issue. This confirms to me that the issue is almost certainly related to some components of the card overheating due to inadequate cooling, compounded by the fact the fans only spin when required (above 65 C on the core) by default. Since temps in my game were always under 77 C even in the heat of the British summer and usually between 65 and 75 C at load then it clearly wasn't an issue with the GPU itself. Some of the black screen issues occurred in games while watching pre-rendered cutscenes while the GPU was underclocked to low-power 2D speeds (in Mafia 3 for example)! I saw the Reddit thread link earlier and found it interesting reading, although I realise that is a mix of opinions and experiences rather than 100% facts. Why EVGA continue to remain silent on this issue by refusing to issue an official statement is a mystery. I would have at least expected some kind of sticky on here so that people who encounter the issue will have a general idea of what it might be so they don't, say, assume incorrectly as I did that this is a driver bug or a result of an unstable overclock. This thread does help but having to read through 45+ pages to get the facts is not really ideal. The longer they remain silent then the more it appears that they are trying to sweep the issue under the carpet so to speak. Maybe they think that by issuing an official statement it would damage their sales/reputation or result in a high number of returns? By the way, an unstable overclock on the GPU would most likely result in the game crashing, Windows freezing or visual artifacts (white dots, coloured squares, stretched polygons, etc). A loose power connector would most likely cause a BSOD, freeze your PC (certainly when trying to run a game) or even prevent it booting. The black screen + 100% fan issue is a result of a hardware issue, confirmed earlier in the thread by EVGA, which IMO is due to overheating components on the PCB that are not being properly cooled. Overclocking the VRAM could also contribute to the black screen issue as well since it is one of the components reported by a few sites to get hot. There are reports of black screen issues on the NVIDIA forum with their cards (not just the 1000 series) but these are not accompanied by the fans ramping up to 100%.

Re: GTX 1080 FTW - Black screen & fans spin up to 100%

Incidentally, I've not done much testing of my new card since installing it on Thursday evening apart from playing 20-30 minutes of a few games, including Battlefield 1, Shadow Warriors 2 and Forza Horizon 3. I have noticed though that temperatures seem to be much lower than with my previous card when using the default fan profile. Shadows Warriors 2 only reached 63 C on 110% resolution maxed out settings at 2560x1440 (v-synced on a 60 Hz display) and on the desktop my card is currently sitting at 30 C with the fans on 0%! On the previous card the idle desktop temperatures with the fan on 0% was 40-43 C! Sure, the weather here in the UK is a bit cooler now than it was, say, last week but not 10-13 C cooler. Hopefully, that means the ACX 3.0 cooling on the card is working properly now as I was always a bit disappointed in the temps on my previous card as they didn't really seem to be that much lower than I'd expect from a reference card.

I suspected it was the VRAM overheating at 300 mhz offset; or something to do with the power connectors not being snugly in place. I played another 1.5 hour session last night with no problems. So about 6 hours in total now since last crash. Just to circle back to my question above, I have a chance to RMA, but really don't want to as the retailer is nice but will run through the tests to make sure I am a legit RMA case. I haven't had an EVGA card since the GTX260 so my question is, if it's stable now (obviously will look at it some more over the weekend) is my GTX 1080 FTW card likely not part of the defective batch? Put differently, is the black screen + fan 100% a 'feature' of EVGA cards when it is having issues and not specific to this one hardware issue? (ie: it could happen also due to bad overclocks, power connectors being a bit loose etc)

To those who are saying EVGA should put out a statement, they did. 1) Look at the OP, it was edited by EVGA. They ask that anyone with this issue contact support for a solution. That solution is likely a new card with additional thermal pads as stated in this post: http://forums.evga.com/FindPost/2567129If your card isn't dead already, you can request the free thermal pads and install them yourself. dexters I suspected it was the VRAM overheating at 300 mhz offset; or something to do with the power connectors not being snugly in place. Since EVGA is beginning to revise their cards with the additional pads I would suggest contacting them for RMA directly instead of through the reseller. The reseller may not have new enough stock right away, unless its a refund you are after. I just did a cross ship RMA myself for my FTW on an unrelated issue. It was in my hands in a matter of days. The online sale stock is not indicative of RMA stock. What I received was also a retail sealed unit.

Yes, I am starting to think it was overheating VRMs and/or VRAM on my previous card too due to inadequate cooling because, and I hope I'm not tempting fate here, I was not able to overclock the VRAM by more than 250 MHz despite all the professional reviews claiming that +500 MHz on the graphics card memory was achievable on every card they tested. Well, I've just played 2 hours of Shadow Warriors 2 with a +400 MHz offset on the memory (and +75 MHz on the core) and I saw no artifacts or issues at all. I am continuing to use the default fan profile and the highest temperatures I saw being 72 C briefly but it generally stayed between 65-68 C. Fan speed was between 10 and 35% or thereabouts. May well be different for other games though. Regarding those thermal pads that are going to be available next week... how do I know if my card has these or not? I would hope that it already does but I just want to check. I'm not comfortable with taking a £600 graphics card apart either to check. Can someone at EVGA please let me know if my card has them fitted or not please? Thanks.

An official statement would have its own thread and be stickied so it is always showing at the top of the forum. The problem with editing someone else's thread like they have and not making it a sticky is that eventually this thread will slip down the forum onto page 2 and get "lost", making it harder for newcomers who may be experiencing the issue to find help. This will then lead to lots of separate threads dealing with the same topic, which I'm sure the moderators will be delighted to deal with! ;)

Xap1Han Having exactly the same issues. Can play bf1 multiplayer for few hours, but then i decided to play some single player - the flying mission - and after first few 5 to 10 mins bamm my second (few days old second card in sli, first is almost 3 months old) card just goes to blackscreen with 100% fans and i need to powercycle. Kinda funny. So looks like it might not be a hw issue with bf1 rather then some software/driver crap. So i guess no SP only hours of MP since this issue has happened only in bf1 SP for me. Played like 2 hours of gta V with both gpus at 98-99% ussage, tried hour of haven 4.0 and even 1-2 hours of Rocket league and so far bf1 SP is the only trouble maker so will just hang back and see how it goes before doing some crazy RMA stuff etc. since the warranty is for 3 years. :)
I have the exact same error on exactly the same mssion in Battlefield 1. Its the plane mission when ur shooting down planes above London. I have not recived the error anywhere else. I ordered my card the 05/09/2016 (d-m-Y) Is this a software issue?
