Hello all,

I have an HP Pavilion h8-1214 Desktop PC that's running a non-UEFI BIOS, version 7.16a (latest version available).

I've updated the RAM, PSU, HHD, and added a SSD. I have purchased a new CPU and a better cooling system, which are on the way from Amazon now. I'm running Windows 10 64-bit.

My problem is that I can't find a graphics card that is compatible with my non-UEFI BIOS. When I try to install a card, the system gets stuck on the HP splash screen, and the motherboard gives a single beep. If I re-install my old graphics card, everything works fine. Based on the research I've done, it seems that I need a graphics card with legacy support for non-UEFI systems.

Pretty much all the cards I've found - such as the Sapphire R9 2xx and R9 3xx series cards - that do support legacy BIOS versions are no longer manufactured and are going for thousands of dollars online. I'm not wanting to buy a used card because I'm worried about how it was cared for prior to my purchase (especially with bitcoin mining). I saw on a thread here that someone had some luck with the EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING, ACX 2.0 6GB card. I'm looking into trying that card.

Does it seem like the EVGA GeForce GTX 1060 SC GAMING, ACX 2.0 6GB card would work on my non-UEFI system? If not, does anyone know of a few cards that might? I'm looking for something in the $150-$250 price range with at least 3GB of memory.

Thanks for the help.

The 1060 isn't going to work. Your options are 280x, or GTX 670.

    what?

every nvidia card released and even the 2080 series has legacy bios compatbility.

only AMD is forcing UEFI only.

This is 100% a HP bios issue.

True, but only certain cards will work with the current bios. http://www.userbenchmark..m/System/HP-h8-1214/1625

There is the option of installing a UEFI emulator, but that'll need a clean windows install.

I should create a hp account and beat some info into the 'experts' there,  they are spreading misinformation about the bios support of 10 series.

HP assured me that the last two cards I tried were 100% compatible with my motherboard and BIOS version...They were wrong lol. I don't trust their 'experts' anymore. I even called their tech support, so it wasn't just people on forums, either.

Okay, so I've found the EVGA GeForce GT 730 4GB DDR3 128bit Dual DVI mHDMI Graphics Card new for a decent price. Before I waste time and money buying and installing a third card just to hear the MOBO beep, is this card likely to be compatible with my HP h8-1214?

I don't know if it's relevant or not, but I've upgraded my PSU to an EVGA 500w Bronze, my CPU to the AMD FX-8350 8-core 4Ghz (4.3Ghz if I choose to overclock), installed 16GB DDR3 RAM, a 150GB SSD, and a 2.5TB 7200rpm HDD. So, I'm not expecting any issues with my CPU being able to handle the card or bottle-necking performance.

Finally, do you think I'd be safe to bump up to the View Max GT 740 4GB GDDR3 128-bit card?  If not, I can settle for the GT 730.

Thanks again you guys. You've been a huge help - way more than HP.

As Sajin already mentioned, if you want Nvidia you'll have to go with a 600 series (not 700, not 900, not 10, not 20 series) card to work with your motherboard. Or older, like the 500 or 400 series.

There are like 4 results on the userbenchmark website showing the GT 730 working with your system, so yes it should work.
