That's right, after nine years, not counting swaping in a GPU, or adding more SSDs, my system is getting an upgrade!

I've been a die hard, for better or worse AMD CPU user since the x486 days. The last time I did a complete system re-do was when I put together this system in 2012, built on the AM3+ 990FX and SLI 480s. I had a 8120, which gave way quickly to an 8350, and in 2015 when I bought my Titan X (I needed the Vram, don't ask, trust me I used it) I eventually was given a FX9370 from a friend who had abandoned the platform, I stuck it in to replace the 8350, found that it under-volted nicely and actually only needed ~150w to run at its rated 4.4ghz full load, which was a good sight better then my 8350 needing every ounce of 200w to be stable at the very same speed.

Gaming gave way to lots and lots of photography, and the urge to upgrade fell further and further behind. I've been playing a little here and there, but the time for change is upon us. I've been gathering up parts over the last month, and now I'm deciding exactly how crazy do I want to get? I used to do complete rivet drill outs on cases, sand everything down and re-paint in the color (or colors) of my choice, cut and drill to add or remove things.

Who knows, but for now, lets show you guys something you don't see very often, a still in use (for another week or so), 990FX, with FX9370, 16gb of DDR3, and a Titan X (Maxwell). A system used for lots of content creation over the last 5 years, and mostly unchanged since 2012.

It's going to be interesting, I keep trying to scoop up a R9 5950x, but I'm going to be playing the waiting game, just like I am for a GPU!

Enjoy the trip down memory lane as we get ready to do a full overhaul on this pig!

Yes I ran Time Spy, just so you guys can see how far we've come! (Spoiler alert, the scores low!)
https://www.3dmark.com/spy/20780549

More will follow as I get the parts in, and the decision if I decide to break down the case or not to modify it.

No, no you would not those have fallen out of favor. It is the 9900 CNPS Max 135mm. It has performed admirably for the 11+ years I've been using it (The cooler is older than this system, and was a carry over from the system before this)

Nice! I used to rock that cooler in my cm trooper, zalman was amazing back then.
Since you need a full rebuild you might consider a prebuilt. Idk if you'll find one with a 5950x, but you can get a 5800x with a 3080 pretty easily. Check out gamersnexus recent review of ABS prebuilts from newegg. The markup on their top tier amd rig is ~$200 over msrp on the parts and they throw in a free monitor(1080p msi, nothing special). Free shipping and financing available.

Updates to come, so far I have an ASRock B550 Extreme 4, a R7-3700x (that I got for $100 with 7 bent pins, but have already fixed, and did a test run with already, CPU is fine) some Crucial 3600mhz CL16 2x16gb. Considering a color theme for the old Ark Midi and how much effort I want to put in. I have an AM4 adaptor kit for the Zalman, gonna keep riding that!

I basically need a GPU at this point, the 3700x is a temp CPU till I can reliably get a 5950x at or below MSRP.

    More to come!

9 years is a long time but it's worth it to make the upgrade - well done.

I've scored the R9 5950x, now just to score the GPU, and I can get this thing all laid out, and assembled as cleanly as possible!

My PC is about to hit 9 years old as well. Hopefully, I can upgrade my PC along with the graphics card. Might have to stick with my 1070 for the foreseeable future :(

I'm still using my Titan X, but the system has been updated, I outright refuse to give any of these scalpers a cent of my earned money. I'm patient, I'll wait.

It's amazing how an old system is able to run and do a great job for so long. My parents computer is now I think 12-13 years old now I think. Of course they don't game on it even though it has a 1070 inside that I wasn't using. Other then putting in a SATA SSD it's been able to meet the needs they have had of it. Of course it was a gamer PC when I built it for myself originally.

I have found an eVGA 3090 FTW3 Ultra at just $75 over the price evga has set. I should have it tomorrow.

I've been a fan of the Zalman design since they came out with them. This 11y old cooler is keeping my 5950x well in check under full tilt. I was very happy to found they offered an AM4 bracket update!

Fellow "PC that is a dinosaur now" person here! Congrats on your soon-to-be upgrade!

I'm also in the same boat and currently patiently deciding and waiting for my parts. Going to dabble for the first time into a making a custom water-cooling loop for the CPU/GPU. Mostly just torn at the moment whether to wait for the X570 Dark or not, but EVGA is being stingy on the release date so I might have to just to finally go with the Gigabyte X570 Aorus Extreme.

Can I ask what led you to choose the B550 over the X570 chipset?

Can I ask what led you to choose the B550 over the X570 chipset?

I did not need the PCI-E 4.0 lanes that the x570 has in abundance. The B550 feature set on the good boards rivals the X570 in terms of everything except PCI-E lanes. At the price point I entered for a board, the ASRock B550 Extreme 4 was unbeatable at the price I got it at ($150) No X570 could touch it in terms of VRM quality, or board features. I am very, very happy with this B550, and once my 3090 arrives I will be doing a tidy up on the system, install a newer larger PSU I got for the 3090, and leave the case its classic Black/White. I decided to go all crazy with my other system update, which is my HTPC, which will be getting my Titan X for lack of a better choice at this time, (family will be happy with that though!) I plan to do a mods rig post for that system as well, but as a teaser for it, here is the second B550 system I built that I call:

The Little Green Machine! (Which is themed Green/Off White) I really wanted to find a green PCB RTX 2060/3060, but meh? I still need to finish constructing a cover to fit over the front of the PSU sit between that and the Optical drive to further tidy it up, this was an ancient m-atx case I had laying around which was never designed with any kind of wire routing kindness at all, I had drilled out every single rivet, and modified it to accept 2 120mm fans, and have at least a partial cable management sollution, all while painting every part and re-assembling. But I have photos and fun stuff for when I make that post, the main content creation/gaming rig update is almost done, and I am exciting that I was able to beat the scalpers at this game.

Thanks! That was entirely the point, I'm cutting up a sheet of lexan, and running some very low intensity white led strips on the side panel to illuminate the interior of this build, I am quite proud of it, I did not want to hide all the wires, the point was to look like it was something almost out of a time machine.

Just a few small things to do to the htpc to finish it. But it's already passed all the stability tests I felt required to know it is ready for the kids, friends, or family to throw at it, those 5600x cpus are amazing even in 45w mode

Man that retro vibe this thing has... very oddly satisfying, I think I love it? lol Way to go dude!

GAAAaaaahhh!!! Your rig is giving me early 2000's nightmares of cutting my hands on non rounded panels and Dell plastic air directors.   Thats a pretty good job but im getting anxious just looking at it.
