Just curious what many of you are cloning your OS drive on an SSD to a mechanical Hard drive, so the hard drive can become the os master drive to boot with. Taking the SSD out of my old pc and putting it into the new one as an extra game/app drive. Just really do not feel like installing windows... again. Is there any free software out there that lets you clone the data from one drive to the other and lets you boot off of it?

I did not know one could run two machines with the same Windows IOS as MS will get all huffy. LOL

If the key is linked to your Microsoft account, then it doesn't matter how many machines you transfer it to. But you should only be using it on one PC at a time.

I have used Acronis for years and seem to remember there was a free cloning version.
Software can run from a standalone Flash or CD
I keep a spare backup M.2 SSD on the motherboard and use BIOS to toggle between the M.2 units.

Saves having to remove the GPU later to use the M.2 slot.

I've never tried to migrate an existing OS with all programs to a new HDD. I've only ever done full reformats and individually reinstall everything.
But I've got a 240 SSD + a 2 TB mechanical(mechanical just for storage).
I'm wanting to switch my SSD to a newer larger unit... can I use Macrium to clone and migrate my install to a new SSD w/o all the work of reformat and installing everything?

I would look at the hard drive makers website to see if they have any software that is free to use. Often times it will look for the brand of drive they make and then can clone it for free. Also the SSD company probably makes software that can clone it. Most of the time it doesn’t care which direction the clone is happening.

A lot of times...when you purchase WD or Samsung...they give you software like "Data Migration" software free with the new drive. In the past...it has been a rudimentary form of Acronis, whereby you can clone to the new drive from the old one. Double check your brand drive and see if anything like that is available. As far as what I use...I have Acronis True Image...and part of the program is disk clone. Mind you...I don't clone inside of Windows. I use the recovery disk that I make...and there is an "additional software" section on recovery that allows for Clone. It is pretty reliable.

I use the provided software to go from HDD to SSD...never gone the other way before tho..

Yes. It's relatively easy to expand a small SSD install to a new, larger SSD without having to change much of anything. Just be sure to immediately remove the old SSD once you power down to prevent problems. You don't want to reformat the old SSD until you are sure there aren't problems with the new SSD install. There's a slight learning curve to figuring out Macrium Reflect and when I first began using it I had to make two attempts to get an exact drive-level clone that included the hidden Windows partitions. There are lots of video guides on youtube if you need the help!

As per suggestions, I just used the Acronis software, as that's what was recommended by Crucial.
Went smoother than I expected, got it done in about 10 minutes after installing the drive.
