My 2080 Ti XC Gaming used to run in the mid 70s while gaming with memory overclocked 700 MHz and the GPU overclocked 170 Mhz with other sliders maxed.  Lately it runs in the mid 80s, the fans are a bit loud.  I've bought the card new from EVGA, I've had it maybe 8 months.  I *think* the temperature increase began the end of December when I upgraded from Precision X1 0.3.12 to 1.0.2.0.  I'm wondering if something in that update could have caused the change I am experiencing.  I had changed nothing else and have proceeded to try tweaking the case fan speeds, changing case fans, replaced thermal paste twice all with no resolution.  Anyway, I'm confident I have positive pressure, not sure what changed and what to do to resolve.  I have been resisting water cooling but I am thinking that is the next step.  Any advice is appreciated.

System Specs:
Case: EVGA DG-76
CPU: 9700K
CPU Cooler: Dark Rock Pro 4
Mobo: EVGA Z390 FTW
GPU: EVGA 2080 Ti XC Gaming

Case fans 100% & then with side of case opens how do the Temps look ?  Also, you need to reference the Room temp

How are you testing ?  Running benchmark loop ?

Your CPU is air cooled & that makes it that much harder for the GPU to stay cool - as the CPU cooler heats the inside of your case

Maybe an AIO cooler for your CPU should be the first step

Okay, case fans at 100 and side off.  room temp is about 72 or 74 F.  Seems to stabilize around 79 or 80 C.

Just playing games I normally play, mostly Apex Legends, settings maxed with 3440X1440.

I'll loop Timespy for a bit and see what happens and report back.

Timespy Extreme Stress Test seems to be the most punishing and the GPU temp doesn't seem to want to go above 80 after about 5 minutes.

Not bad ... room 23 C is on the warmer side ... though above 75C seems warm for you GPU

What Voltage are you using while the benchmark runs ?  Did you set a voltage curve or "lock voltage" ?

What monitor - refresh & resolution do you have ?

Point a small fan at your open case, see if temps drop

All filters in case are clean & GPU cooler is clean - no dust bunnies ?

You say you reapplied the TIM.  How experienced at that are you ?

When you removed the cooler was the TIM covering the entire GPU Die?

Not setting the voltage, just using the slider in PX1 and set to the max.

I have a AW3418DW 3440X1440 running at 120 Hz, limited in Nvidia control panel to 118 Hz.

No dust, build is not that old and positive pressure from the start.   I have cleaned the front filter a couple times.

Not super experienced, but I've built a few gaming PCs, this GPU is the first one I have  reapplied TIM.   Yes, when I removed the cooler the first time it was fully covered.

Going to find a fan and rerun Timespy.

Undo the Max slider on the voltage & see if temps drop & how much - if OC not stable lower you OC on GPU

Run GPU-Z & look at the sensor tab while you benchmark

Might have been a Windows update or Nvidia driver update ... causing higher temps ?

Brought the fan in, from under my house, and temps were at 82 C (had Timespy Extreme Stress running).  Put the fan next to the case and it lowered to 80-81.

I reduced the voltage slider to zero and no change.

No clue what could be causing it.  Maybe my CPU overclock (5.1 GHz) generating more heat or maybe connecting the PCI-E supplemental power on my mobo.

At this point I think that if I want to run a 2080 Ti with overclock and have my system be quiet then watercooling is required.   Do you agree?   Or is this the wrong case or some other issue?

Maybe the cooler has become warped.

Never thought about that possibility. Is it possible to check if that is the issue?

What brand of TIM did you use ?

When you disassemble you look at the contact to establish cooler was sitting flat on Card:

    1) TIM spread ... GPU, you want the entire Die covered - look at contact pattern on both Die & cooler

1a) during assembly, not trapping air bubbles & getting the cooler 100% flat on the GPU die
installing all screws - do not tighten them just start them, so you know cooler is properly aligned with PCB
Then slowly tighten screws in "X" pattern, a little at a time, working the "X"  -  starting with those 4 closest to the GPU die

    2) Contact pattern on the Thermal Pads is also examined to establish that there is proper contact

Nice photos in this for proper contact --->  How to correctly apply the thermal interface material (TIM)? - ekwb.com

It is just a little odd, that your temps changed before your first TIM change & the pattern from the TIM was good when disassembled

Yes, water cooling has its advantages.  Just make sure you have plenty of radiator for your system - Might be tough or impossible in that case

Temps below 85 C are still OK - GPU may start to throttle @85C (Nvidia Boost 4.0)

89C is the Max for the GPU

DG-7 Case supports 3 Front fans, 3 top fans & 1 in back of case:  What is your setup ? Fan, Location, blowing In or Out

    TESTs:
Remove your OC from your CPU.  What does the GPU temps look like ?

Remove front panel (do you have 3 fans in front) - I'm not sure, how much room for airflow it has --> What does the GPU temps look like ?

I'm no expert but saying anything below 85 is ok doesn't sound right .
I thought it would start slowing down after 45 approx ?
Im trying to keep my one below 30 after the end of a benchmark run.

First try I  used Arctic Silver 5.  Then I tried Thermal Grizzly Kryonaut which is what is on there right now.

Great tips on TIM spread and assembly.  I will find a time this weekend to reapply Kryonaut.

Yes, it just happened one day.   I played around with the fans A LOT and even bought some different ones to try out.  Then I got to thinking maybe the TIM dried out.  I will try undoing my CPU OC and see what happens.

Three front fans are intake at high rpm, top fans exhaust at low rpm, back fan exhaust at high rpm.

I always have the front panel removed.   Once I reapply TIM I'll remove CPU OC and report back the results.

Okay, reapplied the Kryonaut and tightened screws in X pattern.  Set CPU back to stock, and Timespy Extreme Stress Test gets it to 82 C after 5 minutes.

I just used kryonaut and was not too happy with results ( it was put on properly ).
Ripped that stuff off and used Arctic Silver .
    Much better temps .
