Windows 10 on ASUS X99-E WS motherboard. I have two GeForce GTX980s installed. Looks like only one is working. The one that's showing bad in Device Mgr. is the one attached to the monitor. I don't get it. I never really understood what SLI does, but NVidia control panel doesn't give the choice to turn it on. Computer seems to work fine, but video plays back a little stutter in video editing software like Adobe Premiere

Says Windows has stopped this device because it has reported problems. (Code 43)

I updated drivers and BIOS.

On the surface, it seems that the card has failed in some way.

Reseat any PCIe power connectors (both ends on a modular PSU) and the card in the PCIe slot and SLI bridge, clean the card's 'gold fingers' with a pencil eraser and some rubbing alcohol and a cloth while it's out.

Switch the cards around and see if the problem follows the card.

Try the card in another PC or take it to a PC repair shop for testing.

As a last ditch effort, you can disassemble the card and bake only the PCB like this..It's not uncommon for cards of that vintage to suffer from solder cracking somewhere on the PCB which can cause all kinds of issues, and with any luck, baking it should reflow any cracks that might exist and all will be well again.

If you decide to bake it, do it with the GPU chip side up, NOT down..I always bake/d at 200C (preheated oven) for 10 minutes.

Before you try bob's post above have you try reinstall driver in your Device Manger where the yellow symbol appear.. try uninstall both of Nvidia GeForce GTX980 driver and reboot it will reinstall itself and if still not solve then try bob's then..

Is that mobo sli certified? Did you install the sli bridge? Both cards are showing up in device manager with no exclamation points so they both are using the nvidia drivers and are recognized etc.... so its something else probably simple like what me and bob have mentioned.

Yes it is SLI certified. Bridge is installed. There is an exclamation mark in device mgr. It tells me which slot the bad one’s in. Computer works fine, otherwise.
    Thanks all for the responses!

Look like the top graphic card faulty but have you try swap round to test?

    Welcome to the Forums

Is this a New build or was it previously working ?

If previously working ... roll back the last Win 10 updates & drivers that happened before it filed

Were the GPU working in other PCs before this build ?

I'd try running just that Card all by itself in a different slot

Run DDU to remove the Nvidia driver & reinstall the same driver or the last known one that worked on that PC before

    1) Many MB from Asus & other Companies - have an auxiliary PCIe power port on the MB to be used when you SLI - Is your connected ?

    2) What CPU are you using ?  X99 PCIe slots available & other hardware used depends on your CPU

Computer works fine. I noticed the GPU error just recently in Device Mgr. I have no idea how long ago it started or which driver was installed at the time.

I'm feeling a bit stupid because I built it 6 years ago and didn't really know what I was doing. My reasoning for the two GPUs was I was anticipating editing 4k video at some point, which I have not yet done.

I have not yet had the time to dismantle the computer. Maybe tonight

    CPU i7 5960X @ 3.0 GHz Haswell
    ASUS X99-E WS (Socket 2011)

The Speccy app on my computer shows no fails on either GPU, except SLI is disabled.

GLAD TO REPORT - GPU IS FIXED!!
Didn't have to do much. Just loosened the cards and jiggled them back into their slots. SLI working again

Yes, I need to get in there and clean, but not tonight!

    Sweet

But I think it would be a good idea to do some maintenance and clean all the 'gold fingers' on the cards like I said in Post #2..And cleaning them out with some canned air while you have them out too.

Man you are do for an upgrade. I thought my 1060 was pretty dogged out....this vega sample is quite the Undervolter, they cool off quite a bit doing as such. I can turn everything up wayyyyy more and Max out/supersample most of everything....

That grease on there isn't that great or anything, need some better tim...under a badddd load the Blower needs to spin like at least 2800-3000rpm...this is where the dilemma lies its starting get noticeable and LOUD at that. Pretty much man. All the References do need an aftermarket Sink or Water...or GPU HOTSPOT temp gets out hand and the card dies/BSOD. But I have headphones so kinda deal with it.
