Hi All,
Hoping someone here can help me. I have an EVGA 650 GQ PSU. It was powering a Supermicro MOBO with dual XEON CPU, an LSI raid contoller and an 8 (spinning disk array). This configuration was working fine. This box servers a VMWare LAB and I wanted to add some juice in the for an SSD array. Installed and Intel RAID controller and the machine powered up. This where things came off track. All the SATA cables were being used for the 8 disk array. So, I bought this adapter:

And plugged it into this SATA power cable -
Even if I only have a single SSD plugged in, the machine doesn't start. My first suspicion was that I'm outta power (even though I don't have a dedicated grapchics card). So I pulled one of the SATA cable (effectively disconnecting 3 spinning disks) and then tried again with only a single SSD attempting to power - same result, machine would power on.
Am I not able to use this type of adapater? How would you troubleshoot?
Thanks in advance for any responses!

    Cable it's plugged into is cable: COMeap Seasonic Antec Modular Power Supply 6 Pin Male to 3X 15 Pin SATA Female --> Now I do see this this particular cable says it's only compatible with cetain PSUs...

    I guess I might end up answering my own question here. I found a similar cable from the same manufacturer which is compatible with all these models but not "semi modular" PSU. TBH, I don't even know what the difference is. But I guess I should first verify - can I even use this type of adapter (8pin to 6) with this PSU.
  • 6 pin port connects to PSU, 15 Pin SATA port connects to riser card or hard drive;
  • Compatible with EVGA SuperNOVA G1(650G1/750G1/1000G1), SuperNOVA G1+(650G1+/750G1+/850G1+/1000G1+), GS(650GS/850GS/1000GS/1050GS), SuperNOVA G2(650G2/750G2/850G2/1000G2/1300G2/1600G2), SuperNOVA G3(550G3/650G3/750G3/850G3/1000G3), SuperNOVA B2(750B2/850B2), B3(450B3/550B3/650B3/750B3/850B3), SuperNOVA P2(650P2/750P2/850P2/1000P2/1200P2/1600P2), SuperNOVA 1000PS, SuperNOVA T2(750T2/850T2/1000T2/1600T2), SuperNOVA nex650g;
  • Please note that it is not compatible with semi modular power supply such as EVGA 1000GQ;

    oshelot, welcome to the forums. Just FYI, a fully modular PSU is where all peripheral cables opposite the power cord are modular. A semi modular PSU is where the 24 pin cable and usually the 6/8 pin CPU [sometimes a GPU cable]are not removable. hope that helps if you needed to know the difference. I hope the Hdrives are ok. On the Sata cable it states use with other PSU's can damage HD's.
