I'm getting a crash in Windows 10 build 1803 and everything is pointing to Precision XOC 6.2.7.  I have attached a screenshot of the analyst of the minidump that resulted from the crash. I hope this will give the engineers something to go by to hopefully fix the problem. I have the minidump but the forum won't let me upload that file type.

I have the same issue after upgrading to Windows 10 build 1803 and running Precision XOC 6.2.7
The crash appears to be when the computer is idle with the screens sleeping. I've posted the text output from WinDbg for one of the minidumps below.
There are actually two types of crashes happening, KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED (1e) and  DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL (d1) both list PrecisionX_x64.exe as the process. I have about 7 minidumps if required.

The usual things to try are uninstall Precision XOC and restart your PC..Then delete the leftover Precision XOC and LED Sync folders located in the Program Files (x86)\EVGA folder, or just delete the EVGA folder if no other EVGA software exists in it..Then reinstall Precision XOC by right-clicking on the installer package to Run as administrator.

Uninstall your current NVIDIA Graphics Driver in Safe Mode with Display Driver Uninstaller (DDU) using the Clean and restart option..Then install the Graphics Driver using the Custom (Advanced) option, selecting to only install PhysX System Software along with the Graphics Driver..If you have any games 'Optimized' with GeForce Experience, I would 'Revert' them before running DDU.

If no joy, you could try a slightly older NVIDIA Graphics Driver or Precision XOC version..Precision v6.2.3 seems to be the 'lesser of the evils' in recent version history..MSI Afterburner can be an alternative to Precision, but doesn't support Memory and Power fan control on cards with iCX cooling, only GPU fan control.

I tried the uninstall and the removal of the EVGA folders but I am still getting a bugcheck crash where I have to manually power off the PC to get it back.

Fully deleting the EVGA directory, reinstalling and recreating all the fan curves seems to have helped.

Re: Precision XOC 6.2.7 bugcheck crash Friday, May 25, 2018 2:33 PM (permalink)
I also have had this issue since either a windows update or precision XOC update. I can't be sure which. I was on a second gen i7 2600k processor that was like 6 years old and the mobo had some issues of its own so I figured it was more to do with that. So I shelled out for a shiny new EVGA z370 FTW motherboard with the latest i7, pci nvme, etc... I even BOUGHT windows (was using work license on win enterprise before) in case I needed support from MS... Anyway, after some initial growing pains, got everything reinstalled and same BSOD happened. KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED with no details. I set kernel dumps on and used WinDbg (which oddly doesn't come with the Windows SDK or Visual Studio 2017.. it's only available through the windows store!!) In the dump I found it pointing at one of precision's DLLs. Because KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED is usually a driver issue, I unplugged everything Oculus related as I was also getting lots of OVRServer DCOM errors as well. That didn't fix anything. I ran the driver validator in windows and it pointed at a Razer driver in their latest 3.0 software... Running the validator actually the system was unable to restart and I had to go into safe mode to reset it! Then after I saw the Razer stuff. Unplugging my keyboard and mouse and swapping in MS ones, uninstalling all Razer software and rebooting... Still had the KMODE_EXCEPTION_NOT_HANDLED issue. These are all while running Precision XOC as part of windows startup. I then disabled it at windows start, closed and rebooted... problem STILL persisted! So that was the final straw, I removed Precision XOC THROUGH STEAM.. This is my KEY here, I had it installed through STEAM, not directly. It was just easier that way... Anyway, after uninstalling it I went to wipe out the folder that is left behind (why sofgtware companies can't clean up after themselves I'll never really understand!) and I wasn't able to as one of the .sys files was still in use by the system... Interesting... I rebooted and quickly deleted the file before steam fully launched. Ran the system for a while, mined a bit, played a game or two on Oculus... no crashing... I looked for an alternative fan solution as really I don't care much about overclocking. Overclocking my gtx980's doesn't do much for me and overclocking my EVGA GTX1080ti FTW Hybrid is also pretty pointless performance wise. I just want my cards NOT running at 80C and throttling while mining. I tried MSI afterburner which wouldn't control the fan on the 1080ti hybrid so that was a no go. Tried Corsair Link which looks cool, but without it recognizing a corsair psu, it doesn't let you do anything for adjusting fan speed (lame!)... So I decided to try Precision XOC again. This time I made sure the program files folder, registry, steam, everywhere had absolutely NO references to Precision or, anything EVGA in it. Reinstalled it, and now I have been up and running stable ever since... It's been all week and today is Friday. I am confident this has solved the issue. I did NO graphics driver reinstalls, had Nvidia Experience still installed as well, and I even left intel's management engine interface in place...

    *taking a breath*

TLDR; For me, the fix was removing Precision XOC completely from Steam (details read above) removing a prior version's garbage from program files folder, cleaning it from the registry, and reinstalling it after rebooting.

I hope this helps SOMEONE because it was a serious pain to work this all out!!!

@EVGA - I know installers are a pain to work with.. trust me I do (having worked on them). I would suggest you have your devs take a look at the installer and make sure all old files are being removed when the versions are updating or overwrite rules are in place. If you can't do that much, perhaps give the user a message or inform folks to completely uninstall and delete the folder before upgrading or something. Also, maybe take a look into the Steam version of XOC and see if it is somehow a bit different or if Steam is doing something on top of what you intended...

Since wiping the EVGA directory entirely I still get the crash but less frequently. My main machine ran for 7 days no issue then suddenly 2 crashes in 2 days then okay again for the last 4 days. I'm sure it's not a hardware problem as my old machine and my brothers machine have both been suffering from the same issue. The machines are 1080 Ti SLI, 980 SC SLI and 980 ACX 2.0. I'm not using Precision for overclocking the cards purely for fan control and have been running an SLI setup for years with no issues until now.

I had Windows 10 1803 crashing for weeks until I could chase it down. Minidump pointed to Precison. Uninstalled Precison and no crashes since Tuesday.

Well so much for that. I had my computer mining stable for several days. No issues. Then I quit the miner and XOC, add my wife as a new user so she can play FF XIV and while doing nothing ( moving the mouse to load up steam) it gets BAOD with KMODE again.

Rebooted, didn’t load Precision this time and now she is happily playing.

EVGA what’s up guys? I know it’s free software but for many of us it’s kind of a big deal. I even switched from being a long time ASUS buyer to EVGA because of my experience with the 1080ti FTW hybrid and the fact the z370 FTW board doesn’t have all the stupid RGB lights all over it. When should we expect a fix or at least an acknowledgement? I’ll work with you in this too. Logs, dumps, whatever just let me know.

Seems like I have similar crashes after 1803 update when running XOC.

Yeah. I have the exact same issue. XOC crashes often in game and then I look down and my card is 90c. I'm just letting you guys at EVGA know right now that you'll be replacing my card when it fails. Please fix this software. ICX users have no other options for fan control at this point.

I do think it's an absolute shame that full fan control on iCX cards can only be done through Precision. The software itself isn't too bad, but when issues like this arise there is simply no alternative for the end user. I've had to allow my card to reach high temperatures while I try and diganose the issue. The only way to keep the temps at an acceptable level was to run an alternative program but set the fan speed to much higher RPM which meant a lot more noise for that one or two fans instead of them all.
In the meantime, a user on this forum has posted a fix that meant you could use Precision but not have the overlay run in the background. Even if you have never enabled the overlay, it still seems to run and inject itself into the game and causes crashes. I should point out that I only had issues with a few games, most recently Destiny 2. PUBG, Star Citizen were fine, for me anyway. You can rename PrecisionXServer.exe, reboot and it shouldn't cause the crashes while still allowing you to use Precision for full fan control.

Here's a novel idea: stop using it.  ;)

You don't need fan control.  Uninstall Precision.  Reboot.  Enjoy.  The card is designed to work properly right out of the box.  ;)  If the software is garbage, no reason to keep punishing yourself.

The good news is, as stated, the card works as it is supposed to right out of the box; no software required.  The better news is that you MAY use MSI Afterburner, if you wish, and control 1 of the fans with Afterburner.  Using Afterburner would allow the card to run a little cooler than stock if you increase that 1 fan's speed, but still without error as the other fan(s) continue to work properly in their stock method.  Think of Afterburner as a solution which may be better than stock, and stable.

Just followed ty_ger07 advise. With Hybrid there is one fan to control anyway, so no loss of functionality.

I appreciate your reply and the suggestion. I understand this issue well enough that I had already considered that. The problem with EVGA cards is that the bios runs the fans such that the card runs too hot in my opinion.

While we're at it let's talk about cost. These cards aren't 300.00 anymore. I paid a premium to get this card and that creates a level of expectation as a customer. Further I am giving up monitoring features that while not necessary for the card to function they were part of the selling points for the hardware. I also realize writing software is hard.  But, let's step back a little. I feel like most of us in these forums have probably built our machines and carefully selected solid hardware.  The bugs in Precision XOC are not generally caused by hardware combinations, they are a result of poor QC and testing. At this point each revision is bug riddled and non-functional. Reading the same post over and over explaining how we need to uninstall and reinstall "properly" is exhausting. It's time for EVGA to buckle down and fix this software. I know users in here will jump to their defense, but the fact is Precision XOC should not be out in the user channel right now.

So yeah I am left with 2 choices, either use a competitors product to spin my cooling fans reliably or uninstall and not use Precision XOC. Again I appreciate the suggestions, but these are not good choices.

I am disappointed and frustrated with my favorite videocard manufacturer.

This started occurring for me as well when I installed the Windows 1803 update.  I had XOC 6.2.6 when it occurred.

Are all issues related to 1803?  If so, maybe there is some sort of incompatibility that got introduced with 1803 update.

I think this may be the case. For now I have completely removed Precision XOC from my machine and all of the issues are gone. EVGA seems uninterested. I'm using Asus GPU Tweak II for fan control.

What GPU though?  I have a 1080TI FTW3.  What the heck are people like me supposed to use?

Since the card works fine by default in the first place (no fan control is truly necessary), controlling "only" one fan with other software should be no problem.

Install version 6.1.15. Set your fans to a static speed via the sliders. Close xoc before gaming. Good to go.

Hope they choose a wise setting. Otherwise they can do way more harm than good. I would much rather advocate not using software; because then at least the fan(s), under firmware control, can reach maximum speeds as necessary rather than forcing the fan to a certain speed and hoping that greater will never be necessary. People have accidentally caused their card to reach thermal shutdown limits due to a manual fan speed setting which was not aggressive enough and due to lack of awareness. If software "must" be used due to some stubbornness, a properly functioning software, such as MSI Afterburner, can safely and reliably control the one GPU fan on the ICX cards while the other fan(s) continue to properly function in their default, safe, automatically controlled way via the card's firmware. ;)

I always use 100% fan speed, so I don't have to worry about such things.

No, as some people will always complain about that being too loud.

Well, then I would caution you that it is a dangerous recommendation without providing further information. I have seen reports of people reaching thermal shutdown limits by using this approach because they were not properly informed or aware. The properly-functioning card controlled by its default firmware is certainly preferable in such a situation.

It's not a dangerous recommendation as long as you understand what static speed means.

"Understand". My point exactly. It is a dangerous recommendation if not explained and not understood by previous experience. Therefore I would caution making such a recommendation without providing any additional information or resources. It's proven to be a dangerous blanket statement.

As stated, the card will work perfectly fine on its own. Fan control is merely a user preference based on the user's desires and expectations. Making a vague statement which could lead to damage is not preferable to either advocating leaving well enough alone or providing proper education regarding fan control.

You know as well as I do that video cards will shut themselves off when a certain temperature is reached to prevent damage, so even if the user set too low of a static speed no damage would be done.
