edit: Ok, I re-installed the drivers. Sound level and quality are much better than it was, not as good with the sound card. Anyway that I can still use the card and use PE1 at x16?

From page 27 of the Z390 Dark manual -

PCIe Slot Breakdown
PCIe Lane Distribution (All Socket 1151 processors are 16 lanes.)
 PE1 – x16 (Gen3, x16 lanes from CPU, x8 shared with PE2)
 PE2 – x8 (Gen3, x8 lanes from CPU, x4 shared with PE4)
 PE3 – x4 (Gen3, x4 lanes from PCH)
 PE4 – x4 (Gen3, x4 lanes from CPU, shares 4 of PE2’s 8 lanes)

You need to use PE3 to have PE1 use all of its lanes

Alright! Thank you. I am still trying to wrap my brain around all of this and this board.

I switched the sound card to PE3. It did not go so well. I probably should have just removed the card. When I booted after changing to PE3, I ended up in a loop ending with some beeps and code d9. Then, a quick loop ending in A6. I removed the card, reset, started, and  got the same sequence as before. I removed all but the cpu, moved the M.2 down a slot put back everything with the same result. I even tried booting with a usb drive. Same result. I hope I didn't harm the board.

Ok, I am back up running. It took a lot longer to clear and reset the CMOS than I thought it would. Just removing the battery didn't work. I had to Leave it out for a while for the board to clear. Don't now how long it took. I removed it and took a break to chill out. Spent that time reading the manual. Thanks.again.

I have to agree that my board (Dark) is not loud enough and does not sound very good for audio playback. I didn't buy this motherboard for sound quality. Speakers are KEF LS50W's. My boards output level seems to be around 50-60% of what my Gbyte and Asus boards are capable of.

I installed an ASUS STX-ll sound card to compare yesterday into PE4. Card was not recognized. Then went into the bios to pci-e selected auto, saved, then reset. Went back into the bios and it was recognized and auto set it to x 1 Gen1. Was then able to install the firmware and everything works fine and sounds like it should.

Even using the TOSLINK Optical or RCA Analog Line Level Input?

I really didn't give the onboard sound a chance. I hadn't hooked up the speakers to this pc until that day I posted. No, I did not try the TOSLINK or RCA from the board. Straight up USB-A.  I had my mind made up even before listening, unfortunately. Now that I am back up and running I will do some testing.
I am not satisfied with the ASUS card with the KEF's. Running the DAC and amplifier from the card to the speakers own amp and DAC that were tuned for a pure analog or digital source does no justice for these speakers. The mids have been replaced with low end bass.

I was asked for a video showing what is going on.

Well it seems I can not directly embed a photo into the post. Not sure why this is turned off.

Here is the video showing what it is doing. I know it is a hair long and I have already had a copyright claim on a fair use educational video.

So... our engineering team looked into the issue and were able to reproduce it.  They determined that it's related to the RGB lighting control and are trying to provide a fix for it in the next driver release.

I uninstalled the sound card and drivers to do some bench testing. Had to take a break from it, so I figured I'd re-install the creative drivers and connected the optical cable to my speakers and give the onboard sound another go to be fair. Everything sounds great that I am hearing. The sound level is a little lower than the card. It's certainly enough for my speakers and ears for sure. Clarity and sound quality is equal to or better than the Sonos using the optical. I prefer the the Dark to the Sonos easily. I have not used it since last spring. For anyone considering this board, you will not be disappointed with the audio nor this board.

edit: When you switch input on these speakers, you have to adjust the volume. I just adjusted the speaker volume. The sound level is now the same or louder than the sound card.

I had to be in the hosiptial for the last 9 days and I just got home. This is good news about getting the NU Audio board potentially working. I had thought about this while I was out and I am still leaning towards a bad chipset or motherboard for the original issue. I can't see what else it could be. It is comforting to see someone else also have this issue.

Guess I will just wait for the driver update. Funny part is I could care less about RGB and have it all off.

Maybe Cheap Speakers or Headphones or the Volume on them are set to low or 0.

Pretty sure my "headphones" are not "cheap". The volume level is acceptable when I run them off their Bluetooth adaptor but using their 3.5mm cord and the internal amp they are very quite. I tested with some of my other audio gear and it gives the same results. I have been in every sound setting in Windows.

Since you are not familiar with what "headphones" I listed and use, you can check them out.

If you ever let me near your earbuds, I would steal them....

The multi-driver ear bud is really superior to everything and anything.  Even the lower range ones smoke single driver earbuds.  Customization is really high too.  I prefer heavy bass, which many to accomplish with a big dedicated bass driver.

I also wouldnt drive those earbuds with the nu audio soundcard.  USB sound has gotten superior and EVGA has been droping the ball with software.  Dont reward their bad behavior.  A 200$ sound card for 2,000$ earbuds doesnt make sense to me.

iFi has analog 3d not digital which makes it far more natural and clean.  Ifi dark + micro iusb sounds awesome.

The card was sounding fine and plenty loud until it started going crazy shortly after using it. If they can patch the RGB software causing this interference I will likely be happy. I have other headphones I use that I am happy with. I just can't have them on for long periods of time. I was really hoping the custom in ears would be better but they have their own set of issues that I am not happy with. The Bluetooth dongle that you can order with them is horrible. I think it has a SnR of like 50dB (they never responded to me). The noise floor is horrible and their customer service was nonexistent. I would not recommend them.

I was sent beta driver 0.1.2.3 for the NU Audio card to test this morning. I just loaded it up and it so far seems to have fixed the "digital diarrhea". Volume levels through the NU Audio card will exceed the level I would ever listen to.

I still think the audio on my board is defective. I am just not sure I want to send it in after finally getting the system to where I can actually use it as intended.

Is this issue you are having on the Motherboard On Board Audio or the EVGA NU Audio Card?
Is it at least showing "Dolby Digital" Support?

It looks like it does as far as I can tell. It shows DTS and Dolby boxes checked. I can't test it though.

I was originally having an issue with the on board Sound Blaster audio. Which I think is an issue with the board after testing things. It is still "broken".

I bought the NU audio card to test with and use. It had an issue also. I was not sure if it was the card or board. EVGA found it was a software issue. This patch seems to have addressed it.

Now that I finally have a PC that works as I intended, I am not really wanting to send in the motherboard right now.
