I'm having trouble with my PC.   I think it's my video card, but looking for some feed back on what else it could be.

The card is a 660ti on a x58 system (full specs in my signature).   The symptoms are once or twice every day I get some kind of error,  the screen goes black from the display driver crashing (event log - Display driver nvlddmkm stopped responding and has successfully recovered), PC reboots, or the system hard locks (usually during games).  Strangely these errors happen once or twice a day then clear up after a reset/restart or two then the PC runs OK for the rest of the day.   The CPU and 660ti aren't over heating and I'm not having any specific hard drive problems.  Though constant resets of my PC can't be healthy for the OS.

Hello, I don't know if it's because I am on a mobile device, but I don't see your PC specs. You should [probably] edit them in original post so you can get the help you need!

Remove you card and give a good Air Cleaning, the Temps that you know of you say are ok but what about the PCB.
What are your Temps? CPU and GPU.
What NVIDIA Driver are you running?
Are you Overclocking your 660 Ti?
Is your Bios Current on your X58 Motherboard?
Are you Overclocking your CPU and Memory?
Have you removed the NVIDIA Drivers and Software and run DDU in Safe Mode to Clean up?
Then install Only the Graphics & PhysX Drivers. NO GFE.
Is your Corsair 850TX PSU over 5 Years old if so may be time to change it out.
Is your Windows 10 Install and Update/Upgrade or a Fresh Install?
What Version of Windows 10 are you Running?
Post your BSOD Codes like 117 or 124 and 121
Any Dump Files in C:\WINDOWS\LiveKernelReports\WATCHDOG you can use BlueScreenViewer to see what the Codes are.
If not your Event Viewer may show some error codes as well.
Your Specs look fine in your signature.

Re: 660ti - lockups, reboots, crashes 2017/05/29 17:35:05 (permalink)
Thanks for the reply bcavnaugh,

I've had this problem off and on for a couple of years.  Mostly it was the monitor going dark as the graphic driver failed.   In recent weeks it has been an every day occurrence and the PC locking up becoming more common.   I don't have a supply of old parts I can swap out to test.  With the age of the PC I'm hesitant to buy new parts.  $100-200 for either a new PSU, video card, or hard drive would be acceptable.  Anything more I'm thinking is better being spent on a newer PC.

I have cleaned and reseated the card and power cables.

CPU Temps (data from the LED display on the MOBO)
Idle ~50c
Gaming Load ~60c
Highest I've seen when I occasionally render a video 75-80c

GPU temps (data from Precision XOC)
Idle ~50c
Gaming Load ~80c.  A bit higher after a long session

Nvidia Driver 376.53 (few months old)

No Overclocking on anything. Stock speeds.

BIOS.   I recall updating my BIOS when I got my 660ti.   The products page lists the BIOS for the x58 mobo 132-BL-E758-A1 as being dated 9/2011.  So I am thinking I have the latest mobo bios.

Driver Clean Up - Nope haven't tried that
I am running GeForce Experience

Parts Age:
PSU, Mobo, CPU are all from 2009.  8 years old.
The 660ti is from 2012 and is almost 5 years old.
SSD drive is from 2013 4 years

My Windows 10 Install is at least 6 months old.
Win10 Version 64bit upgrade from Win7 Pro
It is a direct win10 install from thumb drive not upgraded over win7

BSOD messages
I don't have win10 to stop on the BSOD messages.  It just reboots.   The unexplained rebooting is uncommon so I never bothered.  checking the event viewer I searching for "dump" and found several entries.  All are the same.

The computer has rebooted from a bugcheck.  The bugcheck was: 0x000000d1 (0x0000000000000400, 0x0000000000000009, 0x0000000000000000, 0xfffff8031da0c7a0). A dump was saved in: C:\WINDOWS\MEMORY.DMP. Report Id: 00000000-0000-0000-0000-000000000000

I used the blue screen viewer and have 7 dumpfiles listed.  All the files look the same in the viewer.  Just guessing but this looks to be the relevant info
Bug String check: DRIVER_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL
Bug check code 10x000000d1
Caused by driver: nvlddmkm.sys

I used the DDU software to uninstall the video drives.   I've never used the software before.  It seemed easy enough to understand.  I booted in safe mode.   Ran the software.   Choose the 4th option which was to remove geforce experience drivers.   Then I used the top option to remove video drivers and reboot.   On rebooting win10 I installed the geforce drivers using the advanced options and unchecked the option to install geforce experience.

I'll let you know it this improves my situation.

There is something else I've noticed about my PC that I forgot to mention before.   When booting right before windows actually boots.  One of the post messages says  Verifying DMI pool data......   then boots into windows.   Sometimes that message says  "Verifying DMI pool data..... update success", then boots into windows.   The bootup never hangs there or anything.  Just sometimes it says there was an update.

I think that a clean install of your NVIDIA drivers should do the trick if it's a software issue, but I worry that it may be a hardware issue, given the amount of time you've been having these errors.

If symptoms continue to occur over next next 2 or 3 days, I would try...

Custom install of graphics drivers
-I had similar issues with an EVGA GTX 550 ti - system locking up, games being interrupted by graphics issues, which would typically be followed by my system shutting down on me, etc.
What solved these issues was running custom installations of my graphics drivers; I found information online about users having similar issues with the same card, and the solution seemed to be deleting the previously-installed HDMI audio drivers then excluding the HDMI audio drivers when installing graphics card updates.
-I'm not saying this is your exact issue, but with enough searching the internet looking for this type of issue, you may find other people who have found solutions for similar problems.

Contacting EVGA technical support (https://www.evga.com/support/ticket/support.aspx)
-First of all, you have to make sure your graphics card is registered under your EVGA account, which you can do with the above link
-Next, you can contact the number located toward the top of the page linked above and get on the line with a technical support representative; the representative should be able to recognize your issues and offer you relevant troubleshooting methods.
-However, if you have tried extensive troubleshooting, you can tell them about your symptoms and say if you're confident the card demonstrates persistent issues (for me, my card was just flat-out dead and my system wouldn't start) and they may offer replacement plans, or approve you for an RMA.

Hardware troubleshooting
If you can't find any working solutions to your issue software-wise, I would consider trying to tackle the issue from a hardware perspective; you may have to borrow a friend's card or possibly try running your card in a friend's system, but either of these options could take a couple days at least, given the nature of your problem.

If the issue persists enough for you to decide the issue lies within your hardware, I'd consider seeking a replacement, or your best bet is that EVGA customer support may have a suggestion/solution to help you and possibly make sure you don't have to pay to replace the card, or maybe even pay as much, especially if your warranty is still active.

Re: 660ti - lockups, reboots, crashes 2017/05/29 21:41:34 (permalink)
Here is what I would recommend doing if you continue to have problems...

#1 Try running the computer on one stick of ram.
#2 Try boosting vtt voltage by .10 inside the motherboard bios. e.g. change it to 1.10 from 1.0. Max safe allowed vtt voltage for the i7 920 is 1.35v, so you could try up to 1.35v if you want to see if it helps fix the problem.
#3 Replace hardware with new hardware since your hardware is old. I'd start with the psu.

The new driver install didn't help.   Still getting the same errors.  Oddly I've been getting more sudden reboots with the 0x000000d1 error.

I'll try reinstalling the drivers again without the 3d and sound drivers.

#1 Run with one stick of ram.    Do you think I might have bad ram in the system ?
#2 Boosting vtt to 1.10   I don't know much about overclock settings.  Does vtt increase voltage to the ram or cpu ?
#3 Replacing Hardware.   I don't mind replacing hardware.  I just want to make sure I'm replacing the right thing.

0x000000d1? Did you test with No OC on the CPU and Ram and the BCLK at 100?
You really should Test your Memory as stated above.

From Above
Then install Only the Graphics & PhysX Drivers and Do Not Install GeForce Experience.
Start here but Frist I would test your Motherboard. Do you have a Friends Graphics Card you can test your MB with?
I'd start with the psu.

Running geforce drivers again with ONLY the graphics and physX and I also checked the "clean install" box to remove.   Didn't help.  Same problems.
On motherboard overclocking settings.  I'm not and have never overclocked.   All the settings are the defaults.  Also not using Overclock settings with the precisionXOC software.

Without having some kind of special equipment is there a way to check if a power supply is failing ?

1. Possibly.
2. CPU IMC. (Integrated memory controller)
3. Your psu is 8 years old. Running new hardware on a old psu isn't recommended as the psu could have out of spec ripple that could damage your new hardware.

Have similar occurrence with GTX 680s in SLI, water cooled. I have replaced the PSU with a brand new one. Thought that fixed it, few months have gone by, and now problem rises again. Would love to upgrade the GPUs to get 1 newer one, but cant spend the money at the moment. Heat isn't an issue for me, and the cards have been reseated several times.
