Recently upgraded to CC2018 Premiere and finding the system dropping too many frames when playing Prores 4K 23.976FPS video. A check of CPU usage shows about 45%, but GPU usage shows 75% or higher.

In earlier versions, I could play through an entire timeline almost without dropping any frames. But a hundred or more frames dropped per minute is unacceptable.

Looks like I need a much faster card. What's out there that would at least double or more, the GPU performance so I can edit Prores smoothly at 24 FPS?

Most professional software has specific hardware recommendation, this is because of "specialized drivers" that work the best with that hardware & software combination.

If you have a TitanX of the older 900 series, youll be impressed by the new 10 series GPUs - more powerful & less energy consumed - Watts

I'd go with a 1080 Ti --> sounds like your using a 4K monitor

Yes, I'm using a DCI 4K production monitor, also driving a DCI 4K Sony WV675ES projector for our screening room with this GPU.

Is 75% GPU too much at 24FPS? Not enough headroom and cause of dropped frames when playing Prores timeline?

I've heard good things about the 1080Ti, though I haven't been able to find a direct comparison with the Titan X that is going on 3 years old now. I think I need at least double the performance of the Titan X to get the full 24 FPS out of Premiere.

Oddly, this version does better with Phantom 4 Pro drone footage than it does with Prores. The CS6 version could handle Prores nicely, but drone footage, not so good.

I won't buy another item from Newegg, ever. They gave up private information to the State of CT without a court order. Newegg doesn't care about customer privacy. #BoycottNewegg

I did find another Amazon seller asking about $700 range.

Now I just need to find someone who's running CC2018 and editing Atomos Shogun Prores HQ footage in 4K 24P and find out how the card is performing.

I 'm just saying off the cuff  , but abobe  had hardware issues  before   like coolgtzx implied .    some series of cards may not be well supported  . like using a ''gaming '' card when you really need the  ''work station '' series of cards

a gaming card like say a 980 ti or a 1080  can work   but lack the support needed that you do get in the workstation cards  .    also not only adobe could optimize there software for workstation  / fully supported  and ''gamin cards may only cover so much of whats needed to be fully supported   NVidia drivers also differ  between the 2  as far as full support in a app like CC2018 Premiere.

maybe some help here to get some reading started ?
https://www.pugetsystems.com/labs/articles/Premiere-Pro-CC-2018-Workstation-GPU-Performance-1116/

also check the user comments

ya. your 900 series or a 10 series may work but they may suffer  where a workstation card don't cause it is the cards the program is designed to be ''fully'' used with . so if you were to invest in a 1080 or ti   you may still not see any real gains for the money you just spent over the 900 cards  in something like this .

''The GTX 1080 Ti is about 14% faster than the GTX 1070, 9% faster than the GTX 1080, and about 1% faster than the Titan X. ''

1% for a 700 buck new card ?

too bad they don't use some workstation cards in the results to see how they stand compared to .

So maybe the only good option would be the Quadro GV100.. but at 9 big ones, that's a lot of money to spend just to have smooth 24P playback of Prores files.

I don't know whats a good option anymore  its all about sales hype and gimmicks anymore
and remember the part with the most outrageous  LED's  is the best one to get  ..lol...   as you see LED's are a parts strongest selling points . quality , support is in the trunk.

home users suffer with the line between a workstation card use for these projects and a card they want to do there  gamming on   so I wpuld of assumed that's where the titan would place , but you still a ''gaming' card and them NVidia drivers for that  your not in that quadro style card and there drivers  for that workstation work ?   or build a work computer and a play computer  .

like you say the bottom line is money and your willingness to spend   [and they know it ]

best 'o luck

I guess I should stay with CS6 for Prores edits and CC2018 for XAVC and drone footage, as it seems to do best with those formats.

It's hard to evaluate cards without actually TRYING them in the application one plans to use!

Re: Titan X Not Powerful Enough for Premiere CC2018? 2018/08/05 06:25:20 (permalink)
true.   you  could google around   VS.    like quadro vs  980 ti / 1080 /titan  for 4 k   or editing or what ever and review whats said

https://linustechtips.com/main/topic/427235-editing-raw-red-45k-footage-gtx-980-ti-vs-quadro-k4200/

it seems it comes down to you want pro card results or  just fine recreational card results .     just cant say if doing it at 4k  is whats hurting them all in the end trying to keep that at optimum  FRP or super smooth rendering ?

you maybe best to hold on to see what the  next gen of NVidia cards bring  that's a tad bit  better then the 10 series ?   as poplur as 4 k is now they may be better geared to push it

like here you see a guy brought up adobe may not allow a gaming card to do something like that 10 bit use ,ect.....

''I remember reading that the NVIDIA Titan X could do 10-bit colour, but it was unclear if Adobe programs allow it.''

https://forums.adobe.com/thread/1924788

see that's the thing I want to try to recall  is that adobe  full features  may or may not work on gaming cards   . there programs have been funny that way  , and what makes me think of this is when the 900 series came out a lot of then guys  were complaining  to adobe  cause there cards were not being ''fully supported ''.

http://www.tomshardware.com/answers/id-3020570/titan-quadro-k5200-m5000-choose-work.html

if you can hold on to see what the new NVidia cards  bring to the table   may see the titan if doing ok still or the 1080/ti  is better and there prices come down to close out for the new cards release  or the new series NVidia cards may be the ticket at new card price ?

that of course if its  not something else in your system holding thing back and not the card in the end  [cpu/ memory/ harddrive, ect... ]   if so a ''better''  card may not help at all and in the same boat

that titanx aint no slouch  as is anyway   I would think it should do you a fair decent job  over all in this  [??? ]

OK You Win a GTX 1080 will do the Job for the OP
https://www.pugetsystems.com knows better than Adobe and the OP should not get a GTX 1080 Ti but should only get a GTX 1080
System requirements | July 2018 (12.1.2) release of Premiere Pro CC;
https://helpx.adobe.com/premiere-pro/system-requirements.html is not correct per this Quote and Puget Systems is what the OP should go by.

Well, it is the law. If they didn't fold, they would have had to do it in the end anyway and it would have just cost the government and newegg more money to stall. Amazon is affected by the same tax laws. Anyway, believe what you want.

lol... and look at the system tested on    i9 7940x       way I say   if its something like cpu memory harddrive  and may not be that titinx   .  spending $$ on a ''better card may still not pull you put of the hole  in the end  pushing full 4 k

what does the rest of your rig consist of MW? DD may be on to something. if your cpu or ssd isnt up to snuff that may be a cheaper upgrade. also wondering if any of your software support sli? you might be better off with two of the same cards.

Also, the new cards do 4k @ 60HZ, which requires ALL of your hardware to support 4k @ 60HZ (GPu, Cable, Monitor/Dsiplays).
AFAIK the 900 series does not support 4k @ 60HZ.
So, maybe thats why the newer cards are able to push a little m ore easily, as you are stuck at the 30hz speeds with the maxwell, trying to push 3 things at once on 2 displays? Again, the newer cards and hardware should be able to push lots more even if its @30hz it has all that bandwidth left over for other stuff.

Connecticut law has no force in California. Newegg could just tell em to pound sand. Now they're losing lots of CT customers as a result.

I thought I listed it in the beginning of this thread... it's dual Xeon E5-2667, 128GB RAM, and every drive is SSD--ten drives in all, ranging from 1 to 2 TB each. System cost, excluding accessories was $16K. Meanwhile, I've been disappointed that it can't play 4K 60P back smoothly. Originally, I had a lot of trouble playing XAVC clips from the Sony FS7. I got an Atomos Shogun and Shogun Inferno and started doing Prores and that solved a lot of problems. But then along comes CC2018 and the Prores stutters and XAVC and Phantom drone footage plays fine. But... if I use a LUT, it all goes to heck, unlike CC2015.
GPU utilization is much higher in 2018, so I'm thinking my Titan X is too old now, even though it's only 3 years old.
That data from Puget Systems didn't include the Titan X, so I've no reference to how it will perform against those tested cards.

And like I said, I dont think a Maxwell CAN do 4k @ 60fps.
But the Pascal and up can.
Maybe thats why they are able to outperform the Titan X Maxwell cards.
But, if you want to sli 2 maxwells, let me know.

Well that's interesting.. there are so many Titan X cards it's confusing! Mine says Geforce on it, so I guess, even though it cost a grand in 2015, it's not up to the task.

Is there someplace that has a comparison of GF Titan X vs the Titan X and the 1080Ti?

If the 1080Ti is 3X faster than the Maxwell based Titan X, then I think it's worth springing for $710 if it will solve my playback problems when a LUT is applied in CC2018. Playback performance is the ONLY issue I have with 2018. The rest is ideal.

There's no SLI on this motherboard. It's a SuperMicro X10DRi, server type. That's for the Dual CPU capability.

Re: Titan X Not Powerful Enough for Premiere CC2018? 2018/08/10 09:12:25 (permalink)
Just reviewed the specs on the GTX 1080Ti... unfortunately, there's no DVI port. My primary editing monitor is HP LP3065, dual link DVI. The full screen 4K production monitor is Displayport and the projector is HDMI.

What do owners of DVI monitors do? Does the card include some sort of converter adapter?

And looking on B&H's site, there are about 8 or so versions. What's "SC"?

SC = Super Clocked = Factory Guaranteed Over Clock (OC)

Part Number on Your Titan X ?  (sounds like the 900 series GPU)

Use GPU-Z if you can't see the part number

(See my Post #4)
"If you have a TitanX of the older 900 series, youll be impressed by the new 10 series GPUs - more powerful & less energy consumed - Watts

I'd go with a 1080 Ti --> sounds like your using a 4K monitor"

From what I have seen from EVGA 1080ti cards there is a DL-DVI port.  Now if that is able to run 4k @60hz I do not know off hand as I don't drive 4k on my rigs but the Black Edition SC GTX1080ti card from EVGA have a DVI port.  Have a look at the EVGA 1080ti product page for the real specs.  A lot of these other sellers just copy paste info and it can sometimes be misleading.
