I'm looking at buying a SR2 with two X5690's from a gent over in France and he's asking 1300 Euros for the board and the two CPU's.. The board has a 10 year warranty, it's fully boxed as are the two Xeon CPU's as well. Firstly is it worth it for the money? Secondly, what ram am I best off to put in it and how much? 12Gb or 24Gb or filling it up with 48Gb? Thirdly, maximum temps and volts for 24/7 usage under water cooling.. I wouldn't want to go breaking it :D I do apologise for making a few threads but I don't want to mess it up building it wrong. I look forward to hearing back from you gents :) I was wondering, what do any of you use your SR2 for?

So for a boxed warranted one would you expect to pay roughly? The CPU's are seemingly very expensive but I suppose they are only worth what someone is prepared to pay for them. Would you say it's a good deal for the two CPU's and motherboard (all boxed and in warranty) for the 1300 Euros? How did you find the overclocking with the X5650's? Did it work well?

AFAIK extended warranty is not transferrable. €1300 sounds pretty outrageous, though, even with X5690 CPUs.

So it's not worth the money then? What should I be aiming for price wise then for that setup? I will be paying for it in GBP, but if you think it's too much then I will say...

I paid £380 for my SR-2 new 18 months ago, and about £200 each for my X5650s. You can get the CPUs for half that if you can find some Extra Spicy from a dodgy seller on eBay that hasn't been caught (yet). I'll leave it to you to do the maths. IMO you should get your self a better, newer, cheaper motherboard. SR-2 is an expensive time eater with an extensive array of bugs and compatibilities.

depend. that micros/mobo is used?, the mobo have 10years (used or no used (if not previously registered)), but the micros? you really going to take advantage of these micros? (in ebay, the average price is 700€ each one (used or like new)) for me, is much pricey. but if you can afford it. go ahead I'm still riding the rig. so far I have not thought of doing OC. the oc in X5650 is too good, from 2.66 to 4.2 or 4.5 (+/-) i have paid for the mobo 340$ (with shipping included from USA), and 86€ each micro. all of rest of rig already had it greetings

You only get the 10 year warranty if you register within a month or so of purchase, and you have to provide a copy of the original purchase invoice that is NOT from ebay. The chances of being able to blag this so long after the motherboard has been out of production are pretty low unless you genuinely found a bona fide retailer who has some old stock. Depending on what you intend to do with the board, your OC may be a lot lower than that. I'm running my X5650s at 3.33GHz. With minimized core voltages, they get to nearly 90C under full load on air. You can probably go higher on water, but pushing the FSB much further will cause all kinds of weird, subtle stability issues relating to the motherboard. More so if you are aiming for 96GB of RAM (which is what I'm running). Set your expectations realistically to avoid disappointment. If you just want to shoot for 4GHz+, get a single socket motherboard and save yourself a small fortune.

If it ever goes wrong you'll have to get the current owner to proxy the warranty for you. EVGA warranty terms are extremely generous, but not generous enough to cover 2nd hand goods outside of of the base warranty period.

I was just after an SR2 as it another awesome EVGA 1366 board. the two I already have are amazing. I've always wanted one but it would be more of a collectors item to me.. What would you suggest otherwise?

Seems like a lot to spend if you are only getting one as a collector's item.

So in that way is it worth the cash still? I don't want to be spending on something if it's not going to keep its value or gain it in time.. This is the only reason I've kept both of my Classifieds for so long... That and the 920 D0's that both overclock so well :)

No motherboard ever made has kept its value or gone up over time. I cannot believe you are thinking that is even a remote possibility. To summarise - no it isn't worth it unless you can get the board and CPUs at bargain basement prices. I have 2 and they are a pain in the backside to set up, they are buggy and that's when they are not actually faulty. One of mine has been replaced twice under warranty so far. I have them working mostly the way I want now, but that is within the constraints dictated by the BIOS and hardware bugs, and what can be worked around by custom software patches (e.g. I had to write a patch for Xen to get PCI pass through virtualization to work without trampling the PCI I/O memory area). If you want something similar that will "just work", get a Supermicro board, or a similarly specced Dell or HP workstation of the precious generation. You can probably find one for less than €1300 you mentioned on eBay by now.

Well I do like to dream sometimes ;) Well what would you call bargain basement prices? Why do you have two of them?? That's just greedy!! lol I only really had eyes for the SR2 board because you could overclock it and so on.. What's the biggest annoyance for me is that the one from The Netherlands I've not heard back from and was a steal with the board and CPU's for 500 Euro.. much nicer price I thought but because I've not heard back from him, I'm loosing the will... Well I have a different idea now... Z97, a few G3258 cpu's, maybe a 46xxk and another 47xxk cpu for a bit of fun benching and messing about with.. I am waiting on the new 8 core CPU from Intel but I'll be waiting a long time before I can afford all of that!! I would like to replace all of my Dell monitors with 4k screens and again, run 3x1 monitors with the big 8 core rig... Like what I used to do with the 1366 EVGA boards :) Sounds a bit less mad... :)

€500 for the board with a pair of 6-core CPUs is a reasonable price, assuming it is not in any way faulty (check each slot for fully functional operation with an x16 GPU, and make sure it shows up as x16 in odd numbered slots and x8 in even numbered slots, check all USB ports, internal and internal headers, check all SATA ports, check all RAM slots, etc.). SR-2 is an extremely complex board and there are many things that can go wrong with them. The reason I have two is because I had so many problems with my first one that I needed a second one for a sanity cross-check. On the basis that both of them probably aren't faulty in the same way unless it is a systematic hardware/compatibility/BIOS bug, it gave me a sane way to establish when either one is faulty and needs to be RMA-ed. Given what you already have as per your post above, I don't see any logical justification for a replacement/upgrade. There is nothing currently on the market that will give a particularly worthwhile improvement on your current setup.

Far too expensive for what it is, that ebay listing. And as I explained earlier, nowhere does it say that the extended warranty is transferable. By all means, do ask an EVGA representative, though.

The problem you have is way too much money. If you want that board for some reason and it looks from your posts you do. Just buy the board & cpus at a lower price than 1,000 euros. Myself from what Gordan has told you I wouldnt touch that board& cpus for much over 500 euros. Due to the problems he has experienced. I wanted one of these boards when they first came out but couldnt validate the extra expence ! I would guess 1 of the top of the line X-99 and cpu that fits it would be faster than that board. Thats what I would spend my money on !

The extended warranty does NOT transfer. You have to be the original owner, so you would have no warranty on the product. I believe the first three years are covered if the original owner bought the hardware after July 2011 and registered it.

Yeah, I agree. The technology is way too old for that price. i put some money into my old EVGA 790i FTW build, but in total it was maybe $150 (new RAM, a 3rd video card @ $40 used, a $35 CoolerMaster case, and some green fans). It was a lot of fun, but I had to keep in mind that, as a rule, technology like this only depreciates.

I understand you very well EVGA hardware is interesting and after some time. I never had such feelings for some other stuff. Problems is because I have money only for one rig, but at the moment I would be happy building Z68FTW and GTX580 ULTRA Classified rig more than newest hardware from MSI or ASRock. Simply is interesting and build well. Or even older X58 Classified only card to be DX11. SR-2 Classified will stay alive 10 years after launch date, thanks to performance, enthusiasts who build such rigs, and visual experience she leave on people.

Well I've decided to go another route and make sure that my home server and gaming rig at the moment are more take care of as I think some drives are dying and what with all the data I have, the last thing I want, is for things to die on me! So I had a bit of a spend and got new drives, a few new cheap SSD's for some older builds I have going on and it's all becoming a little less messy :D Now if I can just get some time to test out a few new things I'd be very happy!!

Here in the states the boards sell for right around $500 and more if there is a rear plate or box etc. 5690 cpus are still at $500 each unless you find a deal. I bought a back up board and some 5690's the other day.
