Re: FTW3 Ultra Shutting down PC 2021/07/22 19:11:28 (permalink)
Problem is 100% on EVGA side. I have at my home 3080 ftw3 ultra and 3080 tuf, both paired with Seasonic prime 850w platinum in two different pc's. The one with ftw3 ultra shuts down randomly, so i suspect that's faulty psu, and switch to other pc. Guess what, second pc starts to shut down also. With 3080 tuf not a single problem. Also i want to mention that pc with ftw3 is less power hungry r3600x, no rgb, air cooler, 2nvme drives... The other 5800x, aio, lot of rgb, 2nvme and 2hdd. So evga want to tell me that Seasonic have problem? 😂 😂 Prime platinum is one of most reliable and among the best psu lines in the world. 850w is more than enough to power any of 3080 cards except bad ftw3 ultra. And cherry on top is that ftw3 have one rattling fan when mounted horizontaly (imagine 90% of people mount like that) and it disappear when put vertically in vertical mount bracket. I put ftw3 on sale, and never buy Evga again, especially after email response to undervolt card (i suppose i bought something that should work out of box), then to balance fans with my fingers (😂😂😂), to change psu (more laughter) and they never took responsibility for their bad product. Shame and goodbye!!!!

Three things...

1. Always make sure you don't have a lot of misc. stuff that's not need. Like oh I don't know coupon savers in the background.
2. Get rid of stuff, get to cleaning out pop up blockers, underwear hiders etc.
3. Delete old drivers.

Okay 4. Stop complaining because your stuff is so full of stuff it causes conflicts. I've never had a problem with a new release of hardware because I keep my system free of junk.

You tell em Vip and along with that quit cheaping out on the psu it all starts at the wall socket ya know. Lolz

Just to throw my hat into the ring too on this issue. I have my 3080 FTW3 Ultra since last December but only recently started to notice reboot issues as I haven't been using my PC much at all. My system was built in 2018:
Seasonic Focus Plus Platinum 750W
i5-8600K @ 4.8Ghz with 1.28v
Gigabyte Aorus Z370 motherboard
2 x SSDs
I've used the Seasonic recommended cable configuration from power supply to the card. I use my PC for sim racing and started to get random reboots playing Assetto Corsa Competizione, curiously the game would always stutter a bit before the reboot happened. Power limit is set to stock 100% in PrecisionX and I'm running the latest firmware on the card. No problem on any other sims, I'm guessing its because ACC is heavy on GPU and CPU resources. Today I used ddu to uninstall the drivers in safe mode and re-install the Nvidia driver and all appears to be ok, but reading this thread does not fill me with confidence. A quick question for those who have RMA'd to Seasonic - do you have to return your PSU first or do they send out the replacement? (I'm in the EU btw). Thanks

I replaced psu Seasonic prime platinum 850w for newer one using advanced RMA. You need to contact Seasonic and after they approve RMA, you need to pay collateral of 75 euro on PayPal. When recieve new one, send old psu. After they receive your faulty psu they will send your money back on PayPal. Service centar is in Germany. All procedure takes about a month from Serbia, i think it is less if you are in EU, cause there is no customs and other stuff that prolong shipping in both ways.

Thanks for the reply, that is very useful. I did email Seasonic but they suggested a number of troubleshooting steps including undervolting my card. It seemed to be a canned reply too as they were talking about Nvidia FE cards and I clearly mentioned evga in my email. I am not happy to undervolt, particularly if their PSU line is at fault. In fairness they did suggest an RMA if my problems continued which I will do.

A shut off/restart indicates that the power supply can't handle it, or the video card is being pushed too high (usually overclocking - I've actually had this happen on my 3090 FTW3).

Test in another computer (friends/repair shop), test a different power supply.

If you cannot do either, RMA the card. If the problems persist, RMA the power supply.

Well im going to assume its not a PSU issue, as im not overclocking. 650 is recommended for the 3080. Im above that. Ill see if I can wrestle my daughters PC away from her to test.

No, per Nvidia 750 watt PSU is the minimum recommended not 650. Depending on its age and how hard it has been stressed your 750 may not have the capacity with which it started. I would make sure if it's connected to an APC that the APC is rated for 800 watts plus. If you don't have an APC a 1000 watt APC which conditions your power would be a good long-term investment for this system and its replacement.

Some people have had success with 650 watt PSU but an i9 at high clock speed is nearly the worst case scenario for total system draw. The PSU market is so constrained right now I would try to buy an 850W or 1K W Gold or better PSU and sell yours used on Ebay. Someone will probably buy it.

If you're not willing to upgrade your PSU I would start by under volting your CPU, if that eliminates the problem your PSU can't take the load and I would RMA the PSU.

Per nvidia yes, but this is an EVGA product with a different cooling system and a custom OC applied to the card. Hence, 750w minimum

I have a Seasonic X-850 and am seeing reboots in OCCT Power stress test and one game that I recently started playing. They did not offer me a newer model PSU they said I could pay the $75 to do the Advanced RMA but it would be the same model PSU I have now except refurbished. They did mention it depends on stock and they could ask if they could get me a more up to date one, whatever that means but I am not hopeful. I am now researching other brands to see what I can get in terms of 1000w.

I've heard very good things about Super flower. Will check that one out and I like that its Flat Ribbon Modular, should help with cable management. Buut the Newegg reviews don't seem to be very good and if RMA is needed it has to go to Taiwan.

I have a seasonic 1000w powering evga 3080ti with 5900x on asus x570-i and 3600mhz RAM.  Currently I have my card undervolted/ overclocked and it runs great with no issues. During intense gaming my gpu doesn't hit over 62 degrees in temp.
One curious thing I noticed is that it can't pass an MSI oc scanner.  It causes a computer shut down during the scan so it's a bit odd.  Makes me wonder if this card has issues that I don't know about.  I also own and evga 3090 and asus ROG 3080ti and they all can pass an oc scanner in their pc system with similar specs other than the psu (850w).  It makes me wonder is there is something wrong with my card...................................

I have an EVGA 3080 FTW3 ULTRA - It cannot pass an OC Scanner with Precision (Latest) or MSI Afterburner (Latest). They both seem to crash the PC @ 70~ percent scan completion with the core clock @ about 2k+ MHz. Stock is Core 1800MHZ/Mem 9501MHZ. Drivers are NVIDIA 497.29. BIOS is latest from EVGA.

This is a new card - just received from EVGA.

Power Supply is an EVGA SuperNova 850W

Previous card - EVGA FTW 1070 - Passed Both OC Scanners just fine.

Ill be tinkering around. Maybe i'll find the cause and a solution. /shrug

Re: FTW3 Ultra Shutting down PC 2021/12/28 02:26:59 (permalink)
I have an EVGA 850 GA and tested a couple different 3080's.

Issue:  PC was shutting down under certain loads with both cards, different games, recording or not recording

Troubleshooting:
  1. I throttled down the power and voltage.  It worked but not what I bought it for.  Had to use around 65%, if I remember correctly.  That seemed way too much to be necessary.
  2. I thought it might've been a problem with the power supply.  However, I have an AMD 5950x.  AMD CPUs use less power than Intel's.  I also don't do any crazy overclocks.  I also only have 2 NVME SSDs that use a lot less power than HDDs, for example.  Disconnected my blu-ray drive just in case.  Ran my 3x180mm case fans on low.  I do have a dual-fan 140mm CPU cooler, though, and a rear exhaust fan.
  3. Was leaning on either the video card having memory problems more than power supply issues.

What fixed it?

Jayz2Cents thought on the problem (he sees this a lot)

1) Turned off Fast Boot in BIOS
  • Fast Boot keeps a record of your current hardware, including GPU BIOS, timings, etc.  Turning that off clears that.
  • My previous card in this system was a 1060 3gb.  Was loading that hardware info and limiting the card, most likely.

2) Ran DDU from Safe Mode
  • Too many driver installs without cleaning can cause issues.
  • Pretty sure the Fast Boot solved it, but with Windows 11 I didn't want to take chances.  Updates usually fix issues.
  • NOTE:  I already disabled MSI Afterburner custom settings before.

3) Reinstalled the latest Nvidia driver fresh, including latest Geforce Experience.
  • Using a fresh download and latest version ensures I'm not repeating the same mistake if the previous driver was corrupted somehow.
  • Power outages, bluescreen, hardware shutdowns, etc, can corrupt drivers, Windows, or anything else that's loaded into memory.  Error-correcting in hardware and software can correct this, but hard to do that when a PC shuts down too fast.

Summary:
  1. The problem completely went away.  I'm guessing from Fast Boot being disabled.
  2. I can play at 4k and use Geforce Experience to record my gameplay with no issues anymore.
  3. I don't have to throttle down the power and voltage anymore.
  4. I was even able to re-add the blu-ray drive, and additional case fans, no problem.
  5. Saved me some cash, too. =)

So I am a bit confused. Everyone is saying that it is likely the psu with a problem...but they are also saying if it was the PSU’s over current protection, then I would HAVE to switch the flip in the back. I don’t have to flip switch. Are you all sure ocp will FORCE you to flip switch, and that’s not just some brands ways of handling it?

So. Not too pleased with this new card to say the least. Running stock speeds. Fire up TimeSpy...runs for 10-15 sec......computer turns off and restarts. ANY game I run does the exact same thing....Latest drivers 456.71. Switch on the card is set for Normal. Tried setting a custom VR curve in Precision X1 (1.1.0.2) to under 2000 MHz, cause i saw that it will crash is it goes over that. Curve does not take, and fails every time. This never happened with my 2070 Super.

Thoughts on what this might be? Is there a log file a can run to find out whats causing this? I have no problem returning this card if I cant find out whats wrong.

Get an RMA.. your going to end up with a refurb but it might not have issues...

Just FYI.
I just ended buying a BeQuiet 1200W PSU. Not a single issue since then.
750W was definitively not enough for my combination of hardware.
The 750W ended failing again. So I just sold it.

replace psu with at least 850w...I would go 1000w...done deal.

Higher end Alder Lake also consumes almost 250W during boosting.
So Id say these also require above 850W PSU to function correctly.

This happened to me but with a  EVGA XC Gaming 3060TI upgrade from EVGA XC Gaming 1660ti + 9900k CPU. I was using a 9 year old (I think) EVGA NEX 650G 650 PSU and most games started and ran fine but withcer 3 would reboot the PC on first load in and trying to run 3d mark fire strike would crash reboot PC after loading combined test. Thanks to this thread and a few others I went ahead and upgraded my PSU to a new EVGA Supernova 850 G6 and now witcher 3 and 3dmark launches and runs perfectly. The odd thing is when I ran Prime95 + Furmark and pushed both CPU and GPU 100% the PC didnt shut down. Im guessing the GPU may have spiked voltages when launching witcher and combined test in 3dmark which triggered the shut down?

My 9900k + 3060ti was pushing 400W total when doing stress testing.
I do have 3 SSDs, 3 Fans, CD ROM and USB perifs which may have pushed the poor old PSU over the top.

installed a beQuiet Dark Power Pro 1200W. same crashes..
placed the OC switch of the FTW3 to STD instead of OC. no crashes any more

i dont think this is a PSU related thing..

While I can't say your old power supply never had any issues and you're not better off with the 1200W (I am thinking you are better off now), I would definitely agree that you have an unrelated issue.

The "normal" and "OC" bios switches on 3080 ti FTW3 basically only control the fan curve. The OC position never turns the fans off and has a slightly more aggressive fan curve. The Normal one has a silent mode if the temperatures are low enough because it shuts the fans off. One thing you can try is to re-flash the OC bios as it sounds like it is corrupted. I'm not sure if it'll fix it, but it would be worth trying. You can find the default BIOS and instructions for installing them here.

3080 ti ftw3 (OC to 108% Powertarget leading to 430W powerdraw per HWinfo64) with seasonic focus 750W. crashes during gaming, crashes on desktop, BSODs, rebooting, complete shut offs. whole spectrum.

installed a beQuiet Dark Power Pro 1200W. same crashes..
placed the OC switch of the FTW3 to STD instead of OC. no crashes any more

i dont think this is a PSU related thing..

You can find the default BIOS and instructions for installing them .

thx for the fast reply, i may be an idiot as it turned out lol

just double checked the connections on the Dark Power Pro 12 and got confused by the Multirail layout and the 12Pin PCI connectors it seems. i managed to connect all 3 6+2 Cables to the same rail with 40A.. reconnected everything so im now using 3 rails (40A + 40A + 35A)

everything runs fine by now, im currently testing it.

the thing with the OC switch seemed to be random

Ah. I think those have a little thing you can add that has a 3-pin connector and uses one PCIe slot on the back of the case with a switch that changes it from separate 12V rails to one single 12V rail. The way 30-series draws current spikes...I'd probably go for that lol. They call it the overclocking switch, but even without overclocking, I'd give my 3080ti every bit of juice I can afford to.

6Q6CPFHPBPCU691 is a discount code anyone can use.

yep, its a little switch that would put it in single rail mode, i had to learn about its function through a lot of internet-research since the usermanual is only a general 1 sided sheet that fits all of their PSUs -.-

its working fine so far on 3 rails, i want to avoid single rail mode if possible, but if the OC couldnt run on Multirail, ill switch..

EDIT:
Quick update on the situation: Had some further crashes after replacing my 32gb ram with corsair vengeance 2x32 5600 c40 on both jdec 4800 and xmp 5600. i now have set the PSU to singlerail mode.. i have currently installed the 2x16 again i was running before on stock settings, system stable for now. will try it with the corsairs again to know if it was the PSUs Multirail again not functioning correct. But its weird... i start to think i have a faulty PSU but i have no idea how i could test that. and i dont think the corsair ram isnt compatible with my mainboard since so many similar corsair vengeance rams are on its vendor list.
