Just got the notify for the 3070 FTW Ultra today.  I really wanted the 3080.  I've been waiting for the 3080 Ultra FTW since 9/22.  I signed up for the 3070 on 10/29.
Weird that I'd get that notify first.

That's not weird at all actually. The 3070 launched on 10/29, the 3080 launched on 9/17 and hasn't moved past 9/18 on the majority of the queues that have moved significantly... so your 3070 queue was actually significantly before the 3080 queue, in comparison to the launch date of each card.

For the past 2 decades I have been involved in a service industry which is highly seasonal.  In-between stints as an employee I was an owner for 10 years, but IMO it's a much better life when someone else signs the paychecks.  Due to social psychology (see below) and other "convenience" factors, customers want our service 50x more in the busy season (June-Sept) than they do in the slowest months (January-February).  This is completely illogical but nonetheless I have to plan for it, and have developed techniques for manipulating customer perceptions of availability to help level things off.  The current crazy demand for graphics cards reminds me somewhat of the feeding frenzy we get every summer.  If customers think that our service is hard to get, they DEMAND more of it, and call nonstop screaming at us to hire more employees.  When they think that it's easy to get, they SHUN it, and employees struggle to get hours.  But yeah, we don't have to compete with crypto miners.

en.wikipedia. org/wiki/Scarcity_ (social_psychology)

"Simply put, humans place a higher value on an object that is scarce, and a lower value on those that are in abundance. For example diamonds are more valuable than rocks because diamonds are not as abundant. The scarcity heuristic is a mental shortcut that places a value on an item based on how easily it might be lost, especially to competitors. The scarcity heuristic stems from the idea that the more difficult it is to acquire an item the more value that item has (my note: cryptocurrency). In many situations we use an item’s availability, its perceived abundance, to quickly estimate quality and/or utility. This can lead to systemic errors or cognitive bias.

There are two social psychology principles that work with scarcity that increase its powerful force. One is social proof. This is a contributing factor to the effectiveness of scarcity, because if a product is sold out, or inventory is extremely low, humans interpret that to mean the product must be good since everyone else appears to be buying it. The second contributing principle to scarcity is commitment and consistency. If someone has already committed themselves to something, then find out they cannot have it, it makes the person want the item more....

This idea is deeply embedded in the intensely popular “Black Friday” shopping extravaganza that U.S. consumers participate in every year on the day after Thanksgiving. More than getting a bargain on a hot gift idea, shoppers thrive on the competition itself, in obtaining the scarce product."

The best time to upgrade could be after the 40xx cards are announced, but before production switches over, because then few will want the "old" 30xx cards.  It wasn't that long ago that the 20xx "KO" cards came out at a $100 discount.  We can also hope that crypto crashes and miners flood the market with used mining cards.  To hedge my bets, I have started buying tiny amounts of Bitcoin, because every time I invest into something it crashes (lol).  Here's hope!

This absolutely applies to the current situation with graphics cards--I've looked in on several stock tracking discords over the last few months, and most of them have buy/sell/trade sections. In every single one of those buy/sell/trade chats, there are tons of people looking to trade the cards that they could get for the cards that they actually want.

In many cases, these people have 2-3+ different 3080/3090 variants that they're hoping to trade towards the 3080/3090 variant, or other hardware (e.g. AMD 5000 series CPU/fancy motherboard/etc.) that they actually want.

The same is true of the consoles, of the AMD 6000 series GPUs, of the AMD 5000 series CPUs, and with basically any other piece of modern computer hardware that's currently hard to find.

On the whole, I think that the people doing this are currently having an even bigger impact on the practical scarcity of hardware than the actual scalpers are.

The only thing Jacob has said about the hybrids is that supply is going to be very limited for the foreseeable future.

If your time stamp for a 3898 is after 9:05, I suggest looking for another card unless you MUST have that card and nothing else will do. If your time stamp is < 9:05, consider it a win if you get one before summer. The queue is going to creep along a few seconds at a time.

My time stamp for the 3898 is closer to 9:09. I highly doubt that I ever get one. I will end up getting another card before I see a 3898 appear at my doorstep.

I'm at 9:09:36 (or something very close to that) for the 3898, and this is disheartening. I thought it was my best shot before I ship out. Huge bummer.

I'm at 9:10:29 for 3888 which is the xc3 hybrid so how long do you think it will be for me?

https://docs.google.com/s...z-jIA1J73yJcQ/pubhtml#

Tough to say, Maybe 4-6 months if the line is as long.

I think that if it starts droppig againd I will get it before april because looking at the spreadsheet there is about 60 people ahead of me on the xc3 compared to the 200 people ahead on the ftw sheet

What spreadsheet 😶😶😶

I linked it in my previous post. The tabs for the 3080/3090 hybrids are at the bottom.

i found the reason these are delayed

Where are the pics lol

I got a notify today for the 3070 XC Ultra, however I am aiming for an 3080. If I purchase the 3070 will that remove me from the cue for the 3080's?

Thanks!

No.  They are separate queues.  You are limited to one unit per sku.  May I ask what was your original timestamp?  Thanks in advance!

No, you're limited to 1 purchase per SKU (per card SKU), so you'll still be able to purchase the 3080 when your spot is called.

Hence how I went from a 3080 FTW3 Ultra to a 3090 FTW3 Hybrid & now got a Kingpin on the way.

I wish they would acknowledge the models they have clearly stopped producing and have no plans to produce. Just issue a statement and get it over with. It's been four months.

It's been rather conspicuous for awhile now...now it's a bit ridiculous.  Any statement would be preferable to the silent treatment.

Haha thank you. I had no idea.

I feel like two months ago this thread was having the "Don't you know there's lead times in production?? EVGA has to put in orders in advance!!" conversation.

It's been four months since launch, so maybe six months since EVGA put in its initial orders?

Where is literally any 3080 Gaming SKU? The ones that have never been released to the queues? Where are the XC3 Blacks that haven't dropped in any real quantity since November? Admittedly I haven't followed the 3060 and 3070 drops bc I have no interest in the cards, but it certainly seems like there are favorite children and ignored SKUs among those cards as well.

Are we going to be seven, eight months from product launch before those models start production? Will they ever start? Say something, EVGA. Say literally anything.

I'm sort of interested in how any GPU's Samsung/Nvidea can produce a day, and by extension how many cards EVGA can produce. Guess it doesn't help that Samsungs CEO is sitting in a jail cell. Though I'm also guessing that there are more supply chain issues other than just the chip itself (memory, PCB, mosfets...etc.).

I'd like to think that the availability or unavailability of any particular SKU is due to the "silicon lottery".  I don't really know anything about building AIB GPU cards, but it would make sense if they got a batch in and it just happens to be that most of the batch are suited to a particular SKU.

Not sure how that effects production? Know it will effects stock prices. Samsung is huge even with the CEO in jail they still keep production going to fill contracts.

Re: New EVGA.com Notification Checkout Process 2021/01/21 13:24:10 (permalink)
To be clear, I'm sure the fault IN PRODUCTION is not entirely with EVGA. I'm sure the supply chain is a complete mess, and all rumors point to Samsung's yields being substandard, memory shortages, etc. I can't even fault EVGA for putting all the dies they do get into FTW3 Ultra for that sweet sweet markup. That's fine. Run your business.

But I've been 3 hours out on the 3080 Black since the first week of December. We had a couple good weeks of the card dropping, and the queue advancing by an hour, two hours, a half-hour...

The card is clearly not being produced anymore. But because I'm "only" 3 hours out, I keep hoping, and I keep checking.

"Due to persistent supply chain issues related to the ongoing global health crisis, we have temporarily halted production of the RTX 3080 XC3 Black. We will revisit our production strategy in the coming months and will notify our customers when we are once again able to offer this model."

It's that simple. Who would even be mad about this for longer than 20 seconds, who isn't already mad about being 10 minutes or 20 minutes off the queue time while facing months of silence? Release us.

I've been within an hour on the 3080 black for almost two months now and unfortunately it hasn't moved much. Trying to figure out if i need to cancel my order for the heatkiller waterblock I have ordered, the thing stopping me is a possible delay or supply issue there as well.

"Due to persistent supply chain issues related to the ongoing global health crisis, we have temporarily halted production of the RTX 3080 XC3 Black. We will revisit our production strategy in the coming months and will notify our customers when we are once again able to offer this model."

That almost fits into an @EVGA_JacobF tweet....

They aren't ever going to say any SKU is no longer being produced. Because that's not the case. Once demand has gone down to a point where you can finally just find cards in stock (who knows when that will be) they will start producing all the SKUs. Right now putting all the chips available to them into the higher margin SKUs make business sense. They simply make more money if they put a GPU into a non-black SKU. The clock speeds on these OCed variants are very low. Almost any GPU can hit these "ultra" clocks, so of course any GPU that can (almost all of them) will get put into an ultra card. Hence why there are almost no blacks for sale and much more ultras. They aren't discontinuing, or stopping production of these cards, they are just going to come later. They have set a low bar for ultra cards clock speeds to hit so they can shove almost any GPU they get into an ultra card. If you are a for profit business as EVGA is this just makes business sense. It would be great if they would tell us that the blacks aren't going to be available for a while in volume, but they won't because it would be admitting the OCed variants are essentially a farce just to be able to charge more per GPU. Anybody with Precision/Afterburner can overclock their card to ultra level and beyond very easily. The lack of diversity in SKU availability is due to marketing and wanting to maximize profits. (Quite frankly it's hard to blame them with the current market, they simply can't get the amount of GPUs they'd like so they need to make money where possible. It just sucks for us)

I have 9/24 timestamp for a 3080 XC3 gaming, wonder if those will ever start to move. Well have at least a 3070 to keep me going. Kudos to EVGA for this cue system and I really appreciate EVGA honoring the old prices for now.

Looking forward to starting my first ssf build. As if the timing couldn't have been better I just got my ssf case in today. Now I only need to get hold of a good x570 or b550 mainboard for a 'normal' price and I am good to go.  Still trying to decide between 5800 or 5600 for now, 5900 seem even more rare than the 3080.

Thanks for all the info on this forum, and for the association code, managed to offset the shipping.

It was a straggler drop.  I've found a grand total of 2 reports of the 3080 FTW3 Ultra today.

What really baffles me is that EVGA still let people use notify button knowing that they will never be able to fulfill it. For last 4 months people still singing for cards when they didn’t finish 1 day yet. 4000 series cards will show up before someone signed today gets their card.

It's a notify button, not a pre-order button....
