Feeling it out and being in touch with the guy over the last 24 hours regularly, sounds like a legit thing. Meeting in a populated area on a campus, just a student doing this as a side gig to help pay for school and help others out at the same time.
I've never heard anyone spin a scalper as "trying to help others out". You've got blinders on in your desperation lol.
I've secured plenty of cards for multiple friends and family, and gave one away on forums at cost. That's what you do to help people.
I cant fault the guy for wanting 200-300/card for modest profit, if I had the ability to do so I'd be flipping these things for the same small mark up in the same way he is. At cost is what you do to help family and friends out, and that's how I would approach that situation. Selling for a small profit while not straight out price gouging others because you've taken the effort to go through with being sure you can get cards when they drop - that *is* still helping others that need them out. He even admitted to me that he makes more doing it this way than those you see on ebay or CL listing for 1K over price, he's honest that for him it is about maximizing profit on his end. In doing so, he has helped me out greatly in that i get a FE 3090 for a mere 200 more than retail, before tariff hike. The model cooler I wanted anyway, on a better GPU than I initially wanted, for only 200 more than MSRP. Good luck finding any 3090 at all for 1700.00 online, and purchasing it. Seriously.

Yeah I'm going on vacation Friday and would have loved to receive my 3897 but it won't happen, even though I'm sept 22nd 6:00am... So close since the past month but queue is not moving... -.-

Just because something is on eBay doesn’t mean the seller is a scalper. After getting my RTX 3070, I put my old GTX 1080 Ti up for auction to help offset the cost and to add a gpu back into the community. I had no idea that the used card would eventually sell for over $800. I had set the minimum bid at $400, but the sale price was determined by the potential buyers. The sale resulted in a profit even higher than my original cost for the GTX1080 Ti, which I bought new for $685 at the time. I never imagined that a card bought in 2017 would sell for even more in 2021.

Yep. the cards simply earn too much money mining eth. As of today eth mining pays 10.5 cents an mh. So that 1080ti on medium safe settings will burn 180 watts and make 4 dollars. If you do 200 x 24 = 4800 watts in a day round it up to 6000 or 6kwatts a day. worst power cost in usa is cali at 35-50 cents a kwatt. they earn 4-3 = 1 dollar a day. In New Jersey it is 13-20 cents or .78 to 1.20 cost so 4-1.2 = 2.80 a day so a 3 year old card can make 840 profit in 300 days in New Jersey Never mind a 3080 it make 11 a day burns 7 kwatts maybe 8 so 11- 4 = 7 a day in cali or 11-1.60 = 9.40 is 2820 profit in 300 days in New Jersey so 1080ti s are going for 600 and up on ebay and 3080's are going for 2000 and up even if you list a 3080 at 750 to start in an auction it will sell from 1600 to 2400 depending on make and model. This will not end til eth profits drop to 3 or 4 cents an mh vs 10 cents an mh. plus chips must come back in stock. A new hashrate top was set yesterday https://etherscan.io/chart/hashrate "Highest Avg Hash Rate of 504,661.3626 GH/s was recorded on Sunday, April 4, 2021" that would be 5.04 million 3080's each making $9.40 a day profit after power or 47 million a day in profits which is 17.29 billion a year after power cost. Had my coffee today that number is correct. So a gamer purist that refuses to mine is fighting an industry that may earn 17 billion this year. (as we do not know how long it lasts at 47 million a day. It certainly earned 47 million profit just yesterday. I do not know what will be done to stop the issue. Not sure what should be done. But I wait on a cheaply priced card like every else. I am yet to get one from the queue. I realize that using the 3080 as the only card mining is an estimate but it illustrates quite clearly the issue "ETH mining is great at the moment" All new gpus make too much profit to sell at list. Even 1080tis 3 years old are selling at list after having had mined for 3 years. Paying off 2x and selling at 1.1x means an 800 dollar 1080ti made over 2400 back after power cost and is still making money at 1-3 a day! I will hope for movement here today on the kingpin. or the 3060ti's

I went on vacation a month ago and EVGA didn't come through then, but if your vacation takes you close to a microcenter it might be worth it to go stand in line one morning or get on the list or whatever that microcenter does. I got a 6900xt from 45 minutes of standing in line in Dallas. Then EVGA came through last week with a 3080. My wife is now getting a new shiny desktop pc after a decade of laptop gaming, and she's actually excited about it.

I lived in Cali for 3 1/2 years never understood homes prices. Just too darn high. The gpu prices will continue to stay high and do make sense as long as ETH mining stay this good. At least there is sense in the price. But what do I know? I am just a guy typing on a keyboard in NJ. In a 400k home that would be 1.2 mill in cali!

Agreed. When this is over, I am going to go back and count the cards I purchased since October and supplied to friends/family. Then I am going to count my profit... Wait, I can count the profit now, zero. I got a 3080 FE at BB Friday, going to the final gamer coworker on my list (he's one lucky duck). I got 2-3 more live queue spots and then I am hanging it up, I have secured cards for my inner circle, that's enough for me. Helping people out is not charging a buddy $10/hr to borrow your truck, even though Home Depot is $20/hr, it's offering you and the truck for nothing more than a thank you.
