i baught a 1080ti SC2 in july of last year. the temps were great at first, but over the lat couple months i noticed the temps were getting higher and higher (85c in witcher 3) i decided to open the card up and change the paste. when i opened it the thermal pasted was dried up and hard, i cleaned it off and applied thermal grizzly liquid metal...... temps dropped by 20 DEGREES now sitting in the mid 60's while playing. why would the stock paste dry up like that? i've only had the card for about 10 months.

Using liquid metal is always going to net a big drop in temp. Shin Etsu tim isnt bad, it just isnt as good as it used to be.

Nice! That's a pretty huge drop in temps with the new TIM. My 980ti runs at 76-77C under load and seeing your results makes me want to replace mine too and see what happens.:)

Congrats on voiding your warranty by using liquid metal.

    Hope it was worth it.

It doesn't void your warranty. Please don't spread disinformation. While it is riskier to use, it falls under the same warranty as using any other TIM.

It bothers me to think why they would use the most generic tp and turn around and ask us to spend 1000 on it.
<knowing most of us are going to pop it and replace the paste>

    I agree, disinformation is cancerous.

Aluminum heatsink, no?  Which means the gallium will eat the heatsink.  Or is it nickel plated like the FTW3?

Any how, like I said, it is more risky but using it alone won't void your warranty.

theres still no point to lm between die and heatsink like this,  the TG grease will do the job well enough.

hell that IC graphite pad will do it just as well.

EVGATech_JosephLLM will eat away at the die over time and nail polish or any materials, other than TIM, applied to the chip/PCB will void the warranty.

Yes, unless you have a bad TIM application, you won't see more that a few C at most using LM.  There's many folks who have used LM on both GPU and CPU dies and beyond the the slight surface etching, which isn't any worse than what IC Diamond does, there's no damage.  The advantage of LM is it's good until you take it apart unlike regular TIM which does degrade over time. And personally I find it easier to apply to get pretty much as close to perfect bond layer as possible... all of 5 minutes. What's not to like?  Any how, it's a matter of preference and folks can quibble over it forever.

well the card still works, if it was aluminum the card wouldve been dead the next day. Gallium does its work on aluminum very fast

Are you talking about the asus xoc vbios? If yes, it does void the warranty if you send the card in for rma with the vbios on it, but if you flash the card back to the original vbios before sending it in for service your warranty won't be void.

ikr lol the card was hitting mid 80's with BOTH fans set at 80%, the temps were fine when i first bought it and the following months, when i took it apart there was even coverage on the gpu, was just all dried up :S

i dont think LM will eat at the die, have had it on 6700k for over 2 yrs. how is one block of neatly stacked silicon different than another?
