Same issue here...ย Flashed the OC side with the XOC beta, and was able to confirm 119% in PX1 and GPU-Z... BUT in practice, it doesn't go any higher than the old power limit of 107%.ย  Reinstalling PX1 didn't fix the problem.

BTW... how do I get GPU-Z to show the actual power limits in watts instead of % under the advanced tap?ย

Advanced then Nvidia BIOS option.

Easy. You want true xoc potential. You buy Kingpin. ๐Ÿ˜

Or

It could just be a bug.

I'm not looking to run LN2/DICE on the card. (That's what the Kingpin cards are for) In the past the FTW3 cards have been excellent choices for maxing out on ambient cooling. The 500W limit should be about right for this, but it looks like EVGA dropped the ball on this one by pulling too much power from the PCI-E slot.

I don't think this is a bug. Each power connector has an individual power limit in addition to the total card power limit. I'm seeing the PCI-E slot drawing 75-80W constantly with the 8-pin connectors in the 115-120W range. So 100% of the maximum on PCI-E, and only 75-80% of the maximum on the 8-pins.

I won't rule out that my card is faulty in some way. For the other FTW3 owners: can one of you guys run a strongly GPU bound test (like 3dmark or 4K games) with this BIOS and 119% power target (500W) and post a screenshot of the HWInfo64 monitoring page?

all the ftw3 owners have reported that it's not working for them but users coming from other cards that flash the bios are reporting that its working
so it appears the issue is related to the method of implementation
If you flash the bios the traditional way it should work. If you DL, execute the zip folder that jacob listed it will not work

I'm not recommending you flash though because of risk/warranty
However, maybe this info will help Evga pinpoint the problem

You can also use the new NVIDIA overlay to see in watts, max I see was 485W, but that is only during specific scenarios when heavily overclocked.

Can't you confirm the BIOS version flashed on the card after?

short furmark test with new bios at 119% showing perf cap as PWR and 451w max draw (106.8% TDP). Temps at 53c. 8 pin #3 looks like it's not keeping up with the others, and 8 pins #1 and #2 could be much higher as well. PCI slot is well beyond maxed out at 82w (should be 75w).

The pci-e connections on the card can handle more than 150w. Atx spec (150w) just accounts for bad psuโ€™s.

Re: EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 XOC BIOS BETA 2020/10/21 12:40:36 (permalink)
I think tonight I'm gonna use DDU and do a clean install to see if that helps. Then maybe go testing around to try and find those very specific cases where it may actually be able to boost to ~500w.

Additional note from the XOC bios. I think I noticed the power limit going up even without adjusting the power slider from 100%. Like, I saw wattage at like ~380 with power limit at 100% still when using XOC OC Vbios...curious. anyone else witness this?

This looks like a lot of fun.
A few quick questions.

1. If I switch Just the OC bios and decide I want to go back for whatever reason. How do I do that?
2. On air do you think this can actually bring gains? I know that above 45c it pulls clock and then again at 55c (If my testing is accurate).
3. This doesn't risk any warranty obviously right?

1. Only flash the secondary with this vbios, and then switch back to the primary when you want to go back to normal.
2. Yes, if you're hitting pwr limits it will help.
3. Nope.

Well I just tested it.

OC Bios:
I'm getting around 1000 points better score for GPU on Timespy Extreme and Port Royal. Holding around 2050mhz gpu clock for all the tests with occasional jumps up to 2100mhz.

Quick tip - after flash, I had to uninstall (remove settings) and reinstall PX1 1.0.1.11 to get the iCX temps to show.  I'll give a few runs and see what happens!

Thanks EVGA!

Seems to use less power on the ftw3 overclocked than just with max PL. Running Port Royal.

Also how do we go back to original BIOS Jacob if we just want to go back to stock OC bios?

The previous post about implementation method affecting the efficacy? is that true?

Here's my results.  things are still stable and my timespy & port royal numbers didn't change.

During port royal power draw maxed at 436w, most time <420w - ran average 1985-2010, cool in the low 50's
Timespy power draw had some 440's and a few touches in 450 & 460's, ran higher clocks well into 2000's, hit 2070's and 2100 multiple times, temps in high 50's

It's stable and looks like the card has more breathing room. clocks were +150/+500 and I ran them 5 times each, with not a single issues...  That DIDN'T happen on the old bios, I would crash out.  so something is better!  I'll try pushing it a little more since I'm not really pulling that much more power and my temps are in the 50's.  I should  have room... maybe.

Re: EVGA GeForce RTX 3090 FTW3 XOC BIOS BETA 2020/10/21 14:23:34 (permalink)
Considering my MSI 2080ti will pull over 500W on timespy exteme easily when using the Galax XOC bios locked to 1.093V, it seems obvious there is something limiting power beyond the vBios board draw (My 3090 FTW Ultra refuses to pull over 450W except transiently, and the pci stays around 75W constantly). Given lower quantity of shunts on the FTW3 PCB vs MSI (check techpowerup pcb images), I agree with the hypothesis that the FTW3 PCB natively cannot power balance higher loads over the 8pins while maintaining 75W on pci-e.

Frame chasers has already shunted every single XC3 resister (to bypass pci 75w, etc) and gotten 650W+ draw on timespy extreme on a *3080*, so we really should expect 700W+ draw minimum to really max out a 3090. We absolutely should be seeing 500W constantly on Port Royale and Timespy Extreme runs if we weren't being artificially gated.

I'll probably be selling my FTW3 is this isn't just some bug in the Bios, as this is hot garbage for ambient watercooling. Calling these wattage draws under a good waterblock as "XOC" is ludicrous in the first place. But I have no desire to shunt given the resale value hit, so being locked at 450W eternally due to pcb board design is pathetic.

It really seems to be that MSI is the cost effective play this gen. You can buy a 3 pin pcb for cheaper than strix or FTW, and so far it has played perfectly nice with both the Strix OC and FTW OC bioses (as noted, it actually works with the FTW3 500W bios while the FTW3 Ultra doesn't!!!) Just slap the expected upcoming KPE 525W bios on it, and bam voila 95% of the kingpin performance (I'm *assuming* the KPE will sufficiently superior caps, vrm, etc, plus binned die for a relevant performance increase) for far cheaper.

Really blows that the FTW3 seems to be behind the same-priced Strix in raw PCB components , and now behind the "budget" 3 pin MSI when water-cooling since you can't actually give it the power the chip wants to draw.

I'm obviously hoping that this "beta" bios is merely bugged, but I think that is pretty doubtful given it functions perfectly fine on the MSI Trio.

For those that didn't save a copy of their original VBIOS using the ampere NVFlash, https://www.techpowerup.c...mType=&memSize=&since=

Link to the NVFlash tool is a the top of the page.

Or you can just register your card with EVGA and request the original VBIOS be sent to you.

Again, it will transiently peak above 450; the power balancing is far from instantaneous. What is your average sustained draw? This should be around 450. As stated, the card should easily pull 500W throughout the entirety of Time Spy Extreme if truly not limited since the 2080ti could.

Hopeful to be proven wrong or a victim to PEBCAK.

Average power draw is 477-484. I haven't seen it drop below 477 after initial load/warm up yet (out of 10 TSE and PR runs).

I'd try the Nvidia display overlay, but isn't it tied to geforce experience? I won't be installing that to see what it is reading (very bad experience with it a while back, and there's no second chances for how bad it/Nvidia messed things up). I just have to assume that it reads higher than Afterburner and GPU-Z for some reason.
