EVGA tech support is the best.  RMA process has begun for my malfunctioning card.  My best guess is the firmware flash may of exposed a weakness/defect in the card itself.  It would explain why only card went bad.

I wouldn't flash until someone from EVGA says something official, or updates the firmware.  I only had to mention that I flashed the firmware and then the problems started and I was issued an ticket number for RMA.

Still...this is why I buy EVGA products.  They stand beside their products, answer questions, and replace malfunctioning parts...as long as you register your products.

Could someone clarify what exactly this changed, I've read this thread few times but there seems to be no consensus.

My 670 4GB SC+ came with this firmware so I know of no other state but I do know that games (such as BF3) and 3DMark11 push the power up to 125% levels (seems little excessive?). The power target I can set is 122% of course.

Am I being thorttled early by this firmware (note: temps are fine)?

I believe it corrected some stability issues with overclocks and improved performance in Dell 8300 desktops.

I saw the 8300 fix which was good news for them but I'm running into a weird issue.

My 1st card has that so called keppler boost of 130. Running it stock on Heaven you can see it throttling between 1163 and 1176 (max) and down to 1150 during the dragon part.

My 2nd card is has crap keppler boost of 52/65 (it goes to 65 after x amount of time under load for some reason but will not start there). If I OC this card to match my 1st card it remains stable all throughout the run - it has the same firmware but uses less power at those same clocks.

Temps are fine and below 70 so all I can think of is the 1st card is throttled by TDP already.

I didn't have any problem flashing this new firmware to my GTX 670 FTW. Nothing changed really, except for some improvements.

Has anyone ran OC Scanner just when running stock and if yes what clocks do you see?

For example - without keppler boost - the 670 4GB SC+ is meant to get 1046Mhz. I'm at 1005Mhz - 1019Mhz with power target set to 122% and temps at 65 degrees.

So if temps are under control is TDP simply too low to cope with this?

Above was using "Furry EVGA" stress test. If I choose "Ferry-Tessy Donut" then it's even worse instantly and it's down at 966Mhz because it's been down-volted hard.

Bump.

Is this BIOS / Firmware useless or are my cards defective? Today I ran Heaven on the 'better' card and even with power setting at 120% the thing throttles down a notch 17% of the run.

How is that stability - that's throttling @ stock.

add: for those playing at home, the card comes with overall boost (no OC) @ 1176Mhz. So obviously nothing dramatic.

add2: this is comparing against my 2nd card which is worse (boost point of view). It comes with a beastly boost of 52 and then for some reason up's itself to 65 when it reaches the dragon part (so total boost of 1110Mhz with no OC). This card does not throttle and even after putting +66 core offset stays stable at those volts / clocks.

Only reason I'm posting here instead of creating a thread is because I would love to see the previous BIOS made available so people like myself can test it (I never had the opportunity).

EVGA GeForce GTX 670 Firmware Update v80.04.31

Q. What are the changes in this new firmware?
  • Improved stability
  • Improved compatibility with DELL XPS 8300 systems

Q. Do I need to reapply this update every time I update a driver or reinstall the O.S.?
A. This update is attached to the card, no matter where it goes. If you update the driver, the EVGA firmware update is still applied.

Q. How can I tell what version I firmware I currently have?
A. There are multiple ways to do this, one way is to right click on desktop and go to NVIDIA control panel. Click on Help, then System Information. Scroll to the bottom of the Details window and it will show your "Video BIOS version". It will be listed as EXAMPLE: 80.04.31.00.72. The numbers in bold identify the version number.

Q. I just bought my card, will it have this updated firmware?
A. Chances are yes, as new firmware is release, new products shipping from EVGA will also have this firmware version applied.

Installation
  • Download the correct .zip file below for your graphics card below.
  • Extract the files to a location on disk.
  • Make sure no programs are running in the background, and double click update.exe.
  • Press "Y", then ENTER to begin the update.
  • DO NOT TURN OFF POWER OR RESET DURING THE UPDATE PROCESS!
  • After update, restart PC.

So evga are releasing cards with bad firmware on them? ive just spent 400 gbp on an evga 670 sc 4gb. Im not messing with the firmware to fix issues that shouldnt be there in the first place. Crysis 2 also goes black screen for me if theres any overclock on whatsoever. Without an overclock no black screen. Im really disappointed in evga. Not only can i not overclock my card, but i didnt get the free game which i would have expected. Then theres a terrible coolers evga are putting on them. Really poor quality for the price.

Just checked what firmware im on and its. 80.04.19.00.70.... Is this old? and is there known problems?

I tried doing the firmware update on the two cards I have, seemingly neither of them updated (one stayed on 80.04.31.00.71 and the other 80.04.19.00.70). I also noticed that the subvendor for one is evga (3842) and the other is nvidia (10DE) anyone got any clue what's up with that? Both cards are supposed to be 'EVGA' GTX670s.

System Specs
1 x calculator, 1 x fatherboard, 2 x data storage, 2 x picture makers, 3 x viewports, 1 x butan masher, 1 x rodent, 1 powerplant. :colbert:

Re the firmware, nothing's perfect and if something better than an older version comes out I'm all for improvements. I admit it, I haven't had any luck overclocking my 670 FTW but I'm more than happy with its 1006MHz clock and the 1920x1200 frame rates I'm getting within BF3 etc. so all's good. I did have the RSoD going on last week but that was after me messing around trying some strong overclocks so it might have been me that caused the probs with numerous system lockups?

I got duped when I bought my 670 FTW...the sales guys assured me there was a coupon for Borderlands 2 inside the box when I was buying the card. By the time I got back to them saying 'Hey where's the coupon?' I got the reply oh that graphics card doesn't qualify...errrr yeah he said and we've run out of coupons... I feel like I've been rolled by a playing card trickster. UK supplier's name in question supplied to those who ask by PM. It's no big deal I suppose, just that it soured the purchase of a superbly powerful graphics card that I'd been looking forwards to buying for some time.

Just update the firmware. I know evga is always worst for the coolers. Always. But what can we do? At least they have excellent customer service.

Just picked up a 670 FTW 2GB.  After reading through this thread a couple times with all the varying opinions on whether to "flash or not to flash", I decided to not even try out my new card with the Bios (firmware) it came with, but instead, just flash new firmware right off.  This way I don't know what I'm missing or not missing...  But so far so good.

Don't mess with it unless you have problems. That goes with pretty much any BIOS. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

Don't risk installing this firmware update. After installing this firmware update my GTX 670 reaches about 60'C and causes a complete hard lock system crash...I will likely have to return the card.

In an update to my subvendor query, I have a sneaky suspicion that because one of my original 'EVGA' 670s is listed with nvidia as the subvendor it will not apply this firmware update to it. Which is lucky really, otherwise I would have 2 junked cards. The nvidia subvendor card remains on 80.04.19.00.70, the newer actual evga subvendor card was flashed to 80.04.31.00.70 which is the one that now causes crashes (previously it worked fine).

Hmm, the 670 FTW I got about 3 weeks ago already has newest BIOS, so im good. I wonder how you can make the fan go above 80% though...

There have been several threads on it. It is out of spec with nvidia's guidelines, so none of the manufacturers can mod their BIOSes to allow the fan to go over 80%.

I have a GTX 670 FTW and my BIOS Version is 80.04.4B.00.70

1) Do I need to update?

2) Everything works fine besides BF3, I keep getting "Battlefield has stopped working" message whenever I try to play but Skyrim, D3 works I haven't gotten any RSoD, screen flashes or anything. So.... yeah

My 1st 670 FTW I flashed the latest update right off with no testing.  The 2nd 670 I got I decided to test a bit before flashing to latest revision.  After running a few loops of Heaven and some runs of 3DMark with varying clock and power target settings, I found no differences between 80.04.4B.00.70 and 80.04.31.00.72 as far as my "out of the box" max boost clock or any benching scores.  So from my experiences and testing with these cards, I saw no noticable differences one way or the other between the two mentioned firmware (bios) revisions.

Well this just SUCKS.. I was hoping to purchase my 3rd 670 FTW soon. Nothing feels better than 3waySLI on a monster machine. (except 4way, but thats a little extreme for me) But theres no way I'm taking a chance on this crazy new firmware when it could start messing up my computer, and throwing crashes since I haven't flashed the first 2 yet.

I  haven't had one single issue with these FTW's... I'll wait until EVGA figures this out. I know they will cuz they're awesome. But I do wonder why they continue to issue this firmware update, when they can obviously see that its causing a problem??

Where are you getting that these are causing problems? Most people (in this thread even) can attest to the fact that updating their firmware didn't really do anything. I updated my first 670 FTW to this firmware and had no problems, and my second 670 came with this firmware preinstalled. No problems with either of them.

Just this thread, mainly. Those screen artifacts on pages one and 2 are terrifying. I know they're not causing problems for everyone, but it seems like out of the people here who have posted, the chances are pretty high that something is going to either RSOD, BSOD, or black screen, if not throw artifacts. I found sound pretty disappointing reviews of the cards new firmware on NewEgg reviews too. I don't speak for everyone, and I certainly don't think they're a catastrophe...

But there is OBVIOUSLY something not quuiiiiite right here :S Just my opinion.
