So, my computer was idling while i was in the other room. When I returned, I hear the fans on my video card cranking like the sound of a jet airplane. Even in the most intense gaming, I've never heard this. My monitor was in sleep mode, but I could not get it to wake, wiggling my mouse and smashing keys, to no avail. I then touched my video card to see how hot it was, it was as cool as it would be in idle.

Then, I immediately restarted my computer with a hard reset.  When it booted, it booted into Windows but it was like a 10 bit state. Black and white blurry screen, Windows icons were enormous.  Only part of my desktop was fitting in the screen. Tried to open nvidia settings to see what was going on. Couldn't, it would not open anything. Mouse would work, but did not open any programs that were 16bit or higher is my guess. Such low resolution, programs could not be accessed.

Anyway in a panic, I rebooted again. Then computer booted normally, everything was fine. Did some benchmarking to show that everything was normal and it was. This happened yesterday 2/25/18, since then everything is normal.

I wanted to post this issue to ask if anyone has any idea what happened or could this be a possible issue with my $800 video card I purchased less than a year ago? Or is this just a glitch, that possible may never happen again? I've read online that it (my computer) could have been hijacked by Cryptocurrency mining. But I don't think so, because my card was cool. So, I've ruled that out. Checked for viruses and malware, nothing!

Has anybody else had anything similar to this happening to them? Anybody else have any ideas??? This is driving me crazy, kind of nervous about leaving my computer running idle, while I am away from it now!

Thanks guys, Brock K

Might have something going bad on it. If it does it agsin call evga 24/7 and get it replaced.

I bought a ftw3 card and after a couple of hours testing it on and off in benches it did the same 1000% fans and followed with a Lock up. Would do this over and over as i tested in bf1. Would only take a min and a half for it to reach 80c and bam!

Was fine prior with temps in the low 50c doing benches.

Sounds the same with the old faulty 1080 ftw cards that had the black screen 100% fan issue.

Anyways.. play some games and if it happends again take care of it.

Could be a sign of a faulty psu, or faulty psu pci-e cables.

PWM fans cannot go higher than 100%. It's just that EVGA's default "100%" is not really 100%.

I agree that it could be a power issue, connection issue, or a failing video card.

He's talking about the faulty sensor reading with the GPU crashes...not that the fan is doing 40K RPM.

Ok, I have heard some people claim that the fan spins louder and faster than ever before, and while I agree, that is only because EVGA's default 100% is not really 100% and is instead a lower duty cycle with a higher displayed percentage mapped. When the fan ramps up to 100% with the "black screen bug", it is only going to 100%; true 100%.

Thanks for all the replies. Now, I'm wondering how or what I could do to narrow this down to one specific thing? Do I wait for this to happen again? What if the next time I do some damage to my card or anything else? Should I contact EVGA directly and ask them?

    I'd do the following first...

#1 Reseat the card to the motherboard.
#2 Use different vga outputs on the psu.
#3 Use a different set of pci-e power cables to power the card.

See how that works. If no dice try a completely different psu.
