AHowes And yes I've started out st defaults and then went and maxed out the power/temp sliders and voltage maxed.. started out with the card on the slave bios.
so the clocks fall alot on 4k or do they stay close to the 2063 oc you got ?

Woke up this morning and my first thoughts are.. it's not the psu. It's the power regulation on the card itself. If it was the psu is have hard lock ups and screen freezes and random reboots. That's not happening.

I have the black one, it looks great! There's some tiny specks of silver within the paint. You can only notice it up close tho, really adds to the lighting.

2nd elite is a bust.. spent hours just testing it with firestrike to just give up and go test a game of bf1 in 4k just to see what would happen and it was like the ftw2 100% fan black screen issue!
I literally noticed the card down clocking to around 1300mhz!! while the temp was at 89.. next thing I see is 90c and black screen and hear the fans which already were running at 100% kick in to another gear and sound super loud just like when the 1080 ftw2 would!
Hard reset and had to reboot to get the fans to go back to normal after launching pxoc.
Try it again and the same.. the 3rd time I was able to get out the game once it got to 85.
Everyone mind you I had default settings in pxoc and only cranked the power meter to 127% and tempt to 90 and voltage setting max.
Tried uninstalling pxoc and reinstalling it just encase and ended up with another hard lock up in bf1 without being able to get back to the desktop and needing to hard reset again.
I could literally watch the temp rise like a count down.. every sec was another degree higher till it got to 89-90 toast.
:/
First card didn't do that and was cool while in bf1! He'll why I went to exchange it and not give up on the card cause I was thrilled with how cool it ran and quiet enough that I wouldn't bother getting a water block this time as planned.
While benching both cards in fire strike the temp never went above 53c.
Crazy.

Forgot to mention that we time I played bf1 in 4k max settings I was prob lucky to play for 2-3 minutes before it hit 90c and locked up. First time it did it was the first time I've officially see a card do thermal throttling! The true definition... as it clocked down to 1300mhz! Every other time it just stayed in the 1900mhz range till it quickly hit 90c. Yeah I don't know what my options are but I've already used ddu to remove the drivers as most likely ill be reinstalling the old 980 sli in my sons system again as I have doubts they will let me exchange it. Edit: Just noticed both cards are siblings.. as in 6 digits apart. 469 the first and 475 the second.

Check the thermal paste. It may have been a bad application of paste is all.

Managed to get a 3rd elite card at microcenter.. guess it all depends on who's working. No issues.. made sure to get a card at least 100 numbers off the serial number from then other 2. This one is older.
Will see what happens this time.

Thought the same at first but instead just tried the 4 main screws for the gpu core with a taped head screw driver so I don't chew up the screw heads and they all were tight.. Not about to take the thing apart if I already was unhappy with the card and planned to return it. Besides it didn't make sense as it didn't go past 53c durring firestrike 1080 and 4k benchmarks. It's like something broke on the card but the fans were all running at 100% at 45c as I had them all set to.

3rd 1080ti ftw3 elite card the same deal as the others.. basicly more so. Total defaults on pxoc, no touching anything other then fan profile and it's holding voltage limit 1 the whole time basicly in firestrike 1080 benchmark. Also if it hits 100% or more for power it will toss up power limit 1 for that as well.
Now to try out bf1 4k max settings to see if it cooks like the last one in 3 mins.

This elite can't do 13000mhz like the other 2 cards and don't like overclocking much at all.. maybe just over 2000mhz. Stays around 57-63c in bf1. Correction.. will do 2050mhz atleast.

Dude, a little clock dancing is perfectly normal for pascal. It's just how it works. Also the effect on performance is negligible. 50Mhz clock difference is about 2.5% of the total clock of 2000 which is like 1.5% overall performance. So we are talking 100fps instead of 101.5fps. If you want to stabilize clocks you have to keep the GPU below 40c. If I were you I had kept the 2100mhz one. I'm searching for one that can hit those clocks. I never get this lucky.

I have 2 1080 classifieds that don't dance at all! Even when I tested them on air for a week before I finally put them on water. 2 out of 4 were solid while the other 2 tossed out voltage limit 1 even below rates speeds. I took it as a sign of a bad gpu. So I figured with these doing simular things that these were bad as well. Yeah sucks with the 1 that did 2100.. but it was seriously bad as it cooked itself 4x over in bf1 hitting 90c and black screen with 1000% fan roaring in 3 mins! No good.. something serious was wrong with it. Besides I know all to well about a card down clocking from temp. The dancing I'm talking about was only seen since I shortly had 1080 fe cards. Fe cards were constantly up and down clocks every second. Not the usual clock down every so many degrees. I've since tried some cod iw and crazy that the clocks hold in that game in 4k. But not in bf1 nor firestrike. Would think it would hold under 100% usage and dance under lite use.

Well seems like Cod even in 4k isn't that stressful or stresses different parts of the gpu. I take timespy for example. First gpu benchmark I get nice even clocks. It only drops like one or two steps down as the gpu heats up and stays there, which is perfectly normal. Framerates between benchmark one and two aren't that much apart though. But the second gpu benchmark clocks can fluctuate a lot more and can drop 40-50mhz for a brief period. Power draw is also a fair bit higher here. Remember the Ti is a much 'wider' and bigger gpu than the regular 1080. Some shaders /effects stress your gpu in a different way or utilize more of your gpu. I wouldn't freak out about it as long as it can hit high clocks in the first place. The utilization % doesn't always tell the whole story. Two different benchmarks or games can both show 99% utilization, yet one can make your gpu consume a lot more or a lot less power. Same when I stress my cpu with prime. It will always show 100% cpu utilization, right? Yet a simple change in the instructions (small ffts etc.) can drastically increase powerdraw. Again this especially applies to bigger chips like SkylakeX.

Guys, I just got my 1080ti FTW3 Elite Black last Friday. This is my first new GPU in a few years. I'm very happy so far. Can someone tell me how to flash the bios from master to slave? What bios is the card running out of box? Is there an average OC that everyone is getting? This card has changed VR for me. night and day difference from my Maxwell Titan to this card.

No need to flash anything. To switch to the slave vbios simply flip the vbios switch located on the card. Master should be the default vbios out of the box. 1950 to 2050 seems to be the average.

The card has 3 fans and in order to control thrm manually youll need pxoc. They all dont sync together but you can make them sync to the gpu fan if it makes it easier then to do custom fan profiles for ex. And not the memory temp won't get as high as the gpu and same goes for the power fan so if ya want all 3 fans to assist in cooling the card adjust those fan profiles accordingly or just sync to the gpu fan.
To start with overclocking with pxoc. Crank the voltage to max so the card can use the max voltage of 1.094v and max the temp and power meters. That right there will allow boost 3.0 to do it's thing. For more overclock try +20 To the core and go up from there.
Don't adjust the memory till you settle on a overclock on the gpu. Then try upping the memorya little at a time. +500 would be 13000mhz. The ram is rated for 12k mix. Try +250 first and go up +50 at a time.. see artifacts go back down a notch.

Remember to crank up those fans to at least 75-80% when the gpu hits 40c for a chance at good clocks.
On mins it's like 30% idle and when it hits 40c I have the fans crank to 80%, 45 to 100%. :) I can handle the sound. It's not bad.

AHowes Managed to get a 3rd elite card at microcenter.. guess it all depends on who's working. No issues.. made sure to get a card at least 100 numbers off the serial number from then other 2. This one is older.
Will see what happens this time.
SOrry, I'm being curious, when you said "100 numbers off the serial number", the 100 numbers from first characters serial number or the 100 numbers from the end characters serial number?

I've been using EVGA since GTX 270, and I still don't know what does last 4 numbers mean until now. :) Thank you for your answer. Mine is 0144, but it's Elite White 11Ghz memory. I'm really happy with the idle temp, load temp, and fans are really quiet even at 100% GPU usage!

Yeah i like the cooler as well! Reminds me of how quiet my gigabyte 980 g1 sli is.. last air cooled sli cards I've owned before I felt the need to go back to water cooling with the 1080. Happy with the temps!

I blame nvidia for bios locking. Otherwise we would be looking at very sweet ram clocks indeed. Imagine loosening up the timings on this beast and getting 10~25% increase. We would be looking at 3D 4K game-rendering at home. I want to jump on the Elite, but not sure if it's worth it, and they will probably be all sold out before I get to know if they indeed manage 4K @60fps in all games. I aint upgrading until I get a card that does atleast 4K @60hz. If you have anything greater than a 780 ti there is absolutely no reason to upgrade otherwise. Cept dat e-peen doe
