Ok, so i recently vmodded an old x600xt of mine, and the heatsink on it is crap, so i decided to create a DIY one for it. This can be applied to any gpu i guess, but i'm not sure how much heat it could take (x600xt is obviously not very powerful).
What i used:
old Intel s775 hs with fan removed:
4 washers, 2 3" 4-40 threaded rods, 4 nuts with lock washers, and a cutting board:
How to do it:
1. Take the intel heatsink, and mark on it where the mounting holes on the gpu come through. Then, bend away those fins so the rods can come through.
2. Cut out a chunk of the cutting board, and mark where the mounting holes should be drilled. Proceed to drilling, and check if they line up.
3. Put a nut and lock washer, and washer on one side of each rod. Then put the rod through the cutting board holes.
4. Put the backplate on the gpu.
5. Flip over the gpu, put tim on it (i hadn't in these pics), and mount the intel heatsink on the gpu, lining up the rods with the bent away fins.
6. Put the other washers, then lock washer and nuts, on the rods, and tighten down. Make sure to alternate to get even pressure and not chip the gpu core.
7. Now make sure there is good contact, put a fan somewhere, and you now have a DIY ghetto gpu cooler!
P.S. I just realized, on my card the heatsink goes below the gold fingers of the gpu that go in the slot. In that case, just bend or cut off the fins in the way.
