Remember, your actual vcore can be higher or lower than what you set at Vcore in the BIOS depending on your settings vdroop, PWM frequency, and over volt protection.  This is pretty standard on the X79 platform.

I would rather jump under truck than go for Rampage 4 Extreme now after this board.
But my upgrade must wait little. Now graphic card first and than we will see I will try to stay on Z77 FTW if board decide to work.

Couldn't of said it better. Best way is to play with your droop setting to dial in the LEAST amount of vcore u need for the stability and speed you want. ALL cpus are different of course. When I am air testing in the lab, usually I use INTEL SPEC vdroop setting and basically you get what you set. 1.35v=1.35v loading windows. When benching LN2 and pushing over 5.7ghz on sandy-E, I disable vdroop which will cause vcore to be higher under load and not droop at all, actually reverse droop. So I set 1.65v...but in reality under load in windows I am getting more like 1.7v. Not only does it make the xoc more stable, but it's good because the cpu isn't eating as high vcore when idling/not doing anything.

LOL...I haven't touched any asus HW since X48 because of those ROG biters :). They invited me to ASUS HQ for a "tour" about three yrs ago before I came to TW to live. Wanna know why?
So they walk me into a dark room after showing me around the whole HQ and there is power point slide on with 50+ questions about the EVGA X58 CLASSIFIED. I mean specific questions with pictures of different areas of the board. One question was "what does this inductor do near the vdimm area?" Another question was "what does the x-cool jumper do?" Or "why are there no cold problems on the evga board but rampage have cold bug"?
The question that blew my mind was "Why is the evga x58 classified board better than the rampage, what can we do to the rampage extreme to make it clock like x58 classified"? Then they went on to vga products...CMON!
What a bunch of lamers. This smaller company that just started making motherboards was KICKING THEIR ASS on X58 with the help of my friend Peter (Shamino) and they didn't know what to do about it other than ask me a bunch of garbage to make their boards better because they had POS rampage2 board? The looks on those clowns faces when I refused to answer any single question about evga products was great! I will never forget that moment meeting the whole ROG team and it's the reason why I don't use ROG products at all.

Oh and having dealt with numerous failures (and at one time my favorite) ASUS boards... well they just didn't live up to the jive.  One, two, three months in the mother board dies.  Try to get help?  Yeah... laughable.  They may have improved some... they may have actually done a good job but frankly... I wouldn't buy an ASUS product if God came down and directed me to do it to save humanity.

In another words... It'll be a cold day in....

Hey bolts, how are you doing.  I know the both of us have been involved quite a bit on the ROG forums ever since the RIVE nailed the X79 the right way out of the gate. Like you might be, I'm a big fan of the RIVE as they did it right back in November 2011. I fired it up and never looked back.

That said, because I posted earlier that I'm getting the Dark to check it out do to a pending upgrade for my son's rig, I feel compelled to respond to your post saying we are all pretty much nuts for checking out this new offering.  Two things...first, I do respect Vince.  He has talent.  I'm not going to throw him under the bus for doing what many other talented overclockers have done in the past with endorsing new kit. Second, I'm not blindly brand loyal. Although I took serious heat here a long time ago for being a RIVE fan all I have ever done is endorse products that work. Plain and simple.  The originally EVGA X79 line up sucked bad and the RIVE had it done right from the go.

So, although I may have been inadvertently lumped into the mania you allude to, that's simply not the case for me. I will evaluate the board in my own hands and post my experiences...good or bad.  Like I have always done.  I feel it is close minded to not consider new offerings from any brand and does nothing but limit choices and competition that behooves us all.  I know where you're coming from big time as a fellow RIVE user that has had nothing but good experiences.  But I think we need to let this board speak for itself regardless of endorsements from anyone or past experiences with other brands or older offerings.  Believe me, after having my RIVE rock out from day one for almost 2 years now, the bar is set high.  I'm more inclined to let the chips fall where they may.

This applies both ways as well. I'm just as shocked to see folks here ignore Asus' home run with the X79 series and other current offerings as I am seeing folks bash the Dark at birth. Neither approach is likely best for the enthusiast.

No worries bro..hey your spot on about REX being a home run and working from the get go. Peter and the rest of those guys made a great board FROM THE START. In fact seems they were the only ones to get it right among all the companies.  At worst case, I think the dark can hit the same stability/reliability bar they set with older cpus.  Based on what I've seen from lab testing, I think the new layout and design, particularly memory layout will shine with IVY-E.
Your already really experienced and been around for awhile, but I'm glad to help ya in any way I can with the dark board when your ready. Hope for the best and your happy with you/your sons new build.

I cannot speak to what you call a gimmick. I can however offer this thought...

This mobo has more hours and energy spent on it, to get it right, than I have ever heard. That does not mean it is going to change the worlds view of the x79, it just means for those of us willing to give it a try... Should. Those that do not, should not.

And until you pay for my MOBO, your view of what I do with my hobby just makes me giggle.

Besides... Upgrading is always a risk. Sometimes they are grand slams... Sometimes they are a pop fly...

Well said . Brand loyalty, in my eyes is just silly, we as consumers should be open to the
best we can get for our dollar. I went off on several rants here because what I got for my dollar was
useless/un-useable also that I have had to spend an extra $200 to get
something that IS working/useable (Step up to the DARK).
I have been informed by EVGA Taiwan that my DARK is now in stock so should be getting it soon.
I have a RIVE for this PC that I still have not built since all my X79 FTW drama's
(running another PC with a RIVF which is great).
My Initial brand new gear for the X79 FTW build has been sitting dormant for nearly 12 months now.
I will be giving the DARK a go to see if it is what dustingg and others have portrayed but will be
keeping the RIVE just in case.
If the DARK does turn out to be great, I will sell the RIVE, if not keep the RIVE and sell the DARK.

I am over being pissed at the treatment us initial EVGA X79 owners have received, what gets me more is how
stupid EVGA have been over the whole debacle which has really hurt their reputation in the eyes of those burned.
Just plain and simple it has been dumb business.

In future I will never buy EVGA hardware until it has been proven, tried and tested.
I got burned by newegg.com's reviews being deleted and that most of the issues where not largely documented
here on the forums at the time I purchased it.

I truly hope EVGA have learnt from all this, not only about the importance of releasing 100% WORKING hardware
but also how to treat their customers. If I ever see EVGA in the future treating customers how we X79 customers
have been treated, that will mark the end for me.

Expect the BEST for your $

This smaller company that just started making motherboards was KICKING THEIR ASS on X58 with the help of my friend Peter (Shamino) and they didn't know what to do about it other than ask me a bunch of garbage to make their boards better because they had POS rampage2 board? The looks on those clowns faces when I refused to answer any single question about evga products was great! I will never forget that moment meeting the whole ROG team and it's the reason why I don't use ROG products at all.

We have a rampage2 gene with the cold boot issue. When we contacted asus support, all they would say was we installed some
software that was causing the problem. Only thing was, it had the problem when it was brand new. (It was a prebuilt system built by asus) They did nothing to try to help us with the problem. I finally gave up on them and swore them off. Thanks for posting this about the cold issues on the asus boards, it confirms exactly what I was thinking.

Case in point ^

Vince, sorry about your thread.  I wanted to address the blind fanboy faithful that is the scourge of any internet forum, but the post above is exactly what I wanted to discourage.  I will PM you down the road when my Dark comes in.  I'll step off now so as not to further inflame your thread.

haha ;)

A big thumbs up for Vince speaking honestly which speaks volumes to integrity.  Thank you.  I look forward to firing up the Dark and seeing what it has in store for me.

Hope u dig it Johnny..the new engineering and bios teams that were put in place over the past year for Dark board also designed the new z87 Haswell and already have begun working on future motherboards. I believe Dark board performance, stability, and reliability is now THE standard for ALL future motherboards from this company. I think the company will lift itself even higher than during X58 on mobo side...wait and see ;)

HIDEOUS cold issues on rampage2...every single board I tried that their Taiwan rd sent me. They were BS'ing u and I'm sure at the time u asked them about it, they didn't even have a clue what was causing it :). Most of the boards they have made since early 2000 have always been decent, but REX2 was a big turkey for XOC. Especially coming after one of my favorite mobo of all time, the first REX.

I sure hope so.  Like others have said, the X79 experience has been so painful, even if this gets them back to building industry leading boards -- I'll need to see it proven first before dropping the cash.  Once bitten, twice shy -- but I do hope this is a sign of sunny days ahead.  I know I've been a very vocal critic and personally sunk hundreds of hours into testing/troubleshooting to get nowhere -- so I certainly hope all the feedback has had an impact and they'll avoid scenarios like this in the future.
