Hi everyone!

I really new to over clocking but I do understand the potential and dangers of overclocking so I want to try to keep it safe by asking for some help. Currently these are my specs that I am running with.

EVGA x58 FTW3 motherboard
Intel(R) Core(TM) i7 CPU 950 @ 3.07 GHz 2.79 GHz
8GB DDR3 ram
evga 580 GTX
cooler Master 1200W power supply
Windows 7 64bit
NZXT Phantom case.

I have the precision X that evga provides us for overclocking and right now my current temperature is 36 degrees at 50% fan speed. If someone could help me out with a step by step on overclocking my card to a decent performance (doesn't have to be max) I will greatly appreciate it. I did some research on how to overclock but a-lot of information has been thrown at me so I rather ask you guys from evga (since only the best come from evga :D)

So if you guys can tell me what I should set my GPU clock, Memory clock, voltage or anything else that would be awesome. Right now my specs are:

The reason behind all this is because right now I am playing world of warcraft and I would like to record some in game footage using fraps. I just want to have a decent frame rate with low ingame graphic settings so when I record I wont get as much lag.

Thanks in Advance

Just increase the core clock in 10MHz steps and test each time with something like 3DMark11 or Heaven benchmarks, if you get visual artifacts or driver crashes then you have gone too far for the current voltage.
You can either back it off 10MHz and leave it there or you can increase the voltage a notch and re-test, continue doing this till you get the desired clock speed, bear in mind increasing the voltage will increase the temp so you will have to monitor these while benchmarking and also gaming for the first few times.
Looks like the VID on your card is 1.051v so the next notch is 1.064 then 1.076, for everyday use i would't go past 1.1v really especially on a stock air cooled card.
Once you get the core clock where you want it (850MHz is a decent everyday overclock) then u can work on the memory in the same way whilst leaving the core at the desired overclock, u won't get anywhere near the same performance gains overclocking the memory as you will the core but it's worth upping a little (should be able to get 2025MHz easy enough and more than likely 2050MHz).
Edit: Also wow is quite a CPU dependant game so i have heard so i would look at overclocking that i7 950 to around 4GHz if u haven't already (specs in your post show 3.07 GHz @ 2.79 GHz which is underclocked from stock unless it's a typo).

i say you get more fps while fraps out of overclocking your cpu and maybe lower your resolution before you start fraps. that 580 will get real hot fast once you start oc'ing, i got one, it hits 90c pretty fast, maybe invest into after market cooler for that beast, like the accelero twin turbo II

@Krony: Thank you very much for the reply, I will start doing as you instructed. As far as temperatures while in gaming, the highest I've seen my card go was 45. And yes WoW uses a-lot of cpu usage and also that is my cpu under clocked from, I haven't had the chance to over clock my cpu yet, do you think I should overclock my cpu first before my card or after?

@McMada: That cooler looks awesome dude, I'm actually thinking about buying that right lool! I never had a problem with temperature for my card though but its never bad to be safe.

@liquidfluidity: yea its the Gskill sniper ram (2x4)

Regarding the ram X58 runs triple channel and u have a dual channel kit, ideally u want 3x2Gb or 3x4Gb kits to fill all the grey dimm slots, and yes i would look at overclocking the cpu first, should be able to get 4GHz easy enough.

    Hey guys,

Sorry for bringing the thread back up  again but I had the time to upgrade my computer a bit more. I added the third ram slot and now am running 12gb of ram with the same specs. I also added a liquid CPU cooler to my case to keep the CPU from over heating so that I can be safe when overclocking it. I am planning on getting a liquid cooler also for my graphic card. ( ARCTIC Accelero Hybrid Extreme VGA Cooler-nVidia/AMD, Liquid/Air Combo Ultimate Cooling ) Let me know what you guys think about this.

Right now my system temperatures are looking like this:

So before I start getting work done on my graphic card I want to start overclocking my CPU. I have never done this before and I really want to get into this. Can anyone give me some information on how to start doing this and things I should know before I do start overclocking.

All your help is greatly appreciated.

To be honest, I think you're fine running everything at stock. WoW isn't that hard to run. What resolution are you gonna be recording at?

Well Kubi, since the time has past when I posted this thread, I forgot to update the reason for this also. I want to record using fraps for WoW and Hawken. I also want to start streaming gameplay soon as well. Right now my current resolution is 1680x1050. I will lower it for wow but I do want to keep it high for Hawken. I am not sure but I don't think Hawken has an in game recording option so its pretty much frap as you play. I want to be able to use fraps without lagging my current game play. It doesn't lag that much right now but it does it often enough to affect my game play.

Haven't OC'd a 920/950 before, but ran across this OC thread awhile back.  May be of some use for you.  More detailed answers would have to come for a former/current x58 user (sorry).

Generally though, and this applies for any type of OC you do (CPU or GPU - and even RAM) - take it in small increments and test after each.  Personally, for CPU OC's, I like to use LinX as it is faster than Prime95 to test for basic stability.  Once I have my OC to where I want it, I'll then run it through Prime95 to test for more long term stability.

EDIT:  Oh - I should also mention...you may want to post the specific question about the CPU OC in the 5 Series thread.  You'll probably get more people looking at the post that can help you.

    Hey Boballe,

Yea I understand this thread has changed its subjective a bit, I was originally intending to overclock my GTX 580 but with the new information given I want to first give my CPU a tune up. (Thanks for the information guys!). I guess I will create a new thread for the CPU overclock and when I finish with the CPU ill come back here to ask about the 580. I am pretty new to all this overclocking experience, since I started this thread I've been gaining more and more information on computer hardware so now I have better understanding of things since back then.

So as far as software, I should install LinX to check for stability. What other programs would you recommend to install for either CPU or GPU?

On the side note I also want to try OCing my ram, I heard its possible with the G.Skill DDR3 1333

    Re:EVGA 580gtx 1.5gb Overclocking Tuesday, August 13, 2013 8:16 PM (permalink)
For CPU - I prefer LinX and Prime95.  LinX for the "quick" check of stability (typically takes about 10 minutes or so to run).  Prime95 for the longer stability check (I usually let it run for around 12 hours - but some will let it run for a full 24).

For GPU - I like the Heaven benchmark program or the OC Scanner from EVGA.  I use Heaven because I think it's pretty cool.  The OC Scanner gives you a little more flexibility to shut it down if it finds any issues so you don't over heat your cards.

As for the RAM - generally yes, it is possible to OC your RAM.  However, OC'ing your RAM may require you to tweak your CPU OC.

Alright so after every certain amount of OCing to my CPU I would run a quick check with LinX. After I found my desired amount I would then do a complete test with Prime95 to see the end results?

As far as the GPU goes from what you said, I think I will stick with OC scanner just to be on the safe side since I am new to Overclocking. Ill check out the other one when I feel much more comfortable doing it. I am also thinking about buying a liquid cooler from Arctic to just be even more safe. Right now my GPU is 38c idle which is normal for the card but I can only imagine what temperatures it will receive once overclocked.

So would you say that I should first OC my cpu to a certain amount, then my RAM, and followed by my GPU?

I OC mine 580 1.5GB on SC Clocks, voltage is default 1025.
New GPU-Z totally confused me because  wrong Pixel Fillrare.
GPU-Z 0.5.0 show right for Fermi. My idle temps is about 45C.
But because it's hot summer now.

I  have profil and in games is always under 80C.
    That's OK for stock card.

Personally, I'd go: CPU then GPU then RAM.  As for the Heaven benchmark - it's just a program that runs (Firestrike is the 'new(er)' version).  Again, I just think it looks cool.

And yes, on the CPU that is what I do.  To check for basic stability of my CPU OC, I run LinX.  Then to make sure it really is stable, I'll run it through Prime for about 12 hours.

Also, OC'ing the 580 is really a piece of cake.  I use Afterburner (but Precision is the same thing really).  I usually run an 850-875 OC on my 580's (all air cooled) and the hottest card gets to around 70C when gaming - that's the one sandwiched in the middle of the pack though.  I have, however, heard some pretty good things about those aftermarket coolers.  Thought about them once or twice, but I really don't stress my cards out that much - except for the winter time when I fold with them (but the window is open to keep it cold in the office).

    Hey boballee

Thanks man for all the information you really helped me put my self in the right direction. For the next few days I am going to study and do research on how to OC this i7 950 and try to get it as high as possible (not to the extreme though ;)).

While I am doing that I should be able to purchase this aftermarket VGA cooler for my 580 gtx, I have been hearing a-lot of good things for the ARCTIC Accelero Hybrid Extreme VGA Cooler-nVidia/AMD, Liquid/Air Combo Ultimate Cooling.

I don't stress my cards that much either but I will be doing some high quality renders with Autodesk programs for a few animations. The OC should be able to help make things go smoother and better especially with the new SSD card on the way.

Happy to help.  Maniac's guide linked is really good.  That should get you all set up on the GPU OC.  I have several OC's set up on my 580's (afterburner gives you up to 5 settings).  I have my stock settings, a mid-range/everyday overclock and then an 'extreme' overclock that I use for benching.

Good luck and just be careful - it can be both very frustrating and very addictive!

These fans on NVIDIA reference design cards is fantastic, such similarity with reference AMD from outside and so big noise difference. AMD produce more than double noise.
