With the once-lucrative business of cryptocurrency mining now slowly falling out of favor for discrete graphics, crypto miners are turning their heads to creative solutions to "refurbish" and sell their remaining inventory to third-party users. When GPU components, such as the die or GDDR memory, overheat, they can produce visual signs of damage, such as discoloration or melting. Some miners have started painting the memory on their GPU's boards with special thermal paint to hide the wear and tear from the naked eye and make the GDDR chips appear new in hopes that no one would notice. According to Iskandar Souza and TecLab, their cases are now getting debunked.

As these reports note, miners are removing the stock cooling systems from GPUs to install a third-party solution or recently tried to resolder failed GPU dies back in place and paint the yellowish GDDR memory chips. According to the testing done by Iskandar Souza, you can see below the difference between a worn-out yellowish GDDR chip and its painted deception standing next to one another. Below you can also see the process of resoldering failed GPUs back in place. Crypto miners have been very careful to make them look almost as brand new, so GPU buyers from third-party sources need to be extra cautious before making a purchase.

Another crypto miner dirty trick.

Seems like a bunch of nonsense to me. No one is going to take their time doing any of that at a moderate scale. Sure someone might do that to one or two, but no one is going to do enough that the average buyer is going to worry that odds are that one they buy is affected.

This is the kind of thing where you either have a dozen cards and you do one or two, or you own a million cards and you have enough infrastructure and productivity to do this on a massive cost-effective scale.

Nah! Scare tactics. Proof of concept at best.

I am sure SOME have, but it is something which only makes sense on a small scale or mass scale. That's what I wrote.

The average person shouldn't need to worry.

The time it takes to tear the card down, paint them, add the design into a laser engraver layout, laser engrave new markings, and put it all back together, just doesn't make sense for the majority. It's either hobby work or massive collusion on a mass scale. There is no evidence of it being on a mass scale.

I'm not sure I believe this is a thing. I can understand why there would be an impulse to disparage crypto hardware dumpers though. In some cases, it was standard practice to underclock cards. Either way, I'm not buying right now new or used.

...and if it isn't a EVGA product, good chance it has no warranty so poof it goes along with your wallet, if something should go wrong.

If it is an EVGA product, it definitely has no warranty, since mining voids the warranty and physical modification voids the warranty.

Not sure why EVGA got brought up but most companies would have a voided warranty as a lot don’t allow the removal of the original heatsink.

The other thing I was questioning is how much this is really happening. Seems like a lot of work for a card that uses won’t have the same interest it once did. Wasn’t some of the better mining cards like a 3070 and 3060 which mined slower but used less energy?
