Hi,

Ive had this computer for about 2 years with numerous problems (freezing), the other day i got some new RAM and left it on overnight running memtest which passed. however this was the longest i had ever had it on for, about 36 hours.

When i turned it off last night and went to turn it on again about 5 mins later nothing happend. The blue led  on the motherboard was on as soon as i plugged it on, and the orange led lit up as soon as i pressed the power button but nothing else happend, no fans started ect.

I was planning on buying a new PSU today to test it, however after leaving it off all night it is now working again and im not sure if i should replace the  power supply or motherboard
I have:
790i ultra
e8500
2X GTX280
4 GB Mushkin 996677

I bought it prebuilt and dont actually know what PSU / harddrive I have

Welcome to the forum!  I would double check all of my PSU and SATA connections to make sure every connection is firmly seated.  If it happened again, I would try a different PSU.  Purchase one from a store with a liberal return policy.  It would also help is you would edit your first post and include all of your hardware to include the amount of RAM that you are using and the RAM part number.

Ok so earlier the display stopped working, got a 'out of range' error on my monitor but the computer seemed to still be working ( could hear music ect) I shut it down and it wouldnt power up again.

So I bought the only PSU my local store sells and went to install it but as i said i bought the PC prebuilt from alienware and it seems impossible to change

i have unplugged the PSU from all the main components however it has wires going all over the case directly connected to the fans and LEDs, and then theres the power button, i have no idea how to connect that directly to a new PSU.

at this point im thinking it might be easier to just buy a new case and move everything

The power switch on the case should be connected to the motherboard, not directly to the PSU.  When you plug the 24 pin connector in, the case power button should work.  If you take your time and chase down each power connection, it really isn't that hard to replace the PSU.  That will also give you a reason to perform a little cable management.

Thanks for all your help, turns out it was just like you said.
some random cables were comming from the power button direction not connected to anything but were tied together with everything else so i got confused.

Will see how this runs now then, although this power supply is a bit smaller than the old one and doesnt reach the little shelf thingy so 3 screws are holding all it's weight.

I am glad that you have it installed.  Make sure that the PSU you installed is rated as high or higher (wattage) than the one it replaced, and has the same or higher amperage rating on each of it's rails, specifically the 12v rails.  All the pertinent information should be written on the side of both PSU's...just compare them.

    i
It has higher amps on everything however it has one less rail so is rated 100 wats less, 850 instead of 950. I'm just using one GPU atm though to test, i have 14 days to return this. Will 850w be enough or should i start looking online for something better?

850w is plenty with the hardware that you listed in post #1.  What brand and model PSU did you purchase?

The link that you provided is to the 1000 watt model.  The iCute link is below, which model do you have?  http://icute.com.tw/english/power_02.html
Edit - Is the following link to the model you purchased?
