Hi all, so I currently have the I7 5820k and I know it's a good processor for gaming and don't have any complaints, but was wondering if I'm reading it right that the I7 6950X will work with the Socket LGA 2011‑3?

Well, i'm not 100 percent sure about the m.2, but after looking it up I believe this is it for that, 2 PCIe / SATA M.2 slots. As for the motherboard, it would be whatever the Alienware area 51r2 uses, which as I said it currently has the I7 5820k installed. As for the GPU, Evga 1080ti FTW3, 16Gb of ram @2133mhz.

I have one residing on my EVGA X99 Classified motherboard.
Will also work on a EVGA X99 FTW K motherboard too.
Too bad EVGA does not make those motherboards anymore but if you look around you can find one.
I think that any X99 motherboard should support that cpu.

The price is really steep on the 6950x, so unless it comes down some I'll probably look into what other options I'd have for the LGA 2011-3 socket, either 8-10 core that would give me better performance over the I7-5820k. Honestly, the 5820k isn't bad at all, but just would like take a step up in a year or so for the performance increase as mentioned and getting ready for future gaming.

I have a 6850K on my X99 FTW K motherboard (6 core) that works well and I don't think most games use that many cores.

Just make sure to update your bios to the latest one before you upgrade! Most manufacturers released a bios upgrade to accommodate Broadwell-E

+1  check for the BIOS version that will support your new CPU, if it newer than whats in your MB, you'll have to upgrade it

I'll play devil's advocate and say why not go with a used Xeon, or even a Xeon engineering sample? See if your board supports those, and you'd be laughing all the way to thread bank. It might not support ES Xeon's, but there is a good possibility it will support regular Xeons.

+1 some used xeons can be had for a song and are really just a desktop cpu that supports ECC ram

Hi,I am in the market for a socket 2011 board and Cpu. All I need is a good CPU which can handle LIGHT GAMING and FOR VIDEO, PHOTO EDITING.And if you could recommend the amount of ram needed for those task and a decently priced Graphics card.
