Hi,

I've got an EVGA 1070 (no factory OC). It has quite headroom for OC as it can sustain ingame +250 on the core / +400 on the Ram. I didn't wanted to go too far on the OC so I settled at plus 200 / 400 making it run stable ingame at 2050 with peaks at 2088. However the cards runs hotter and I struggle to find the good fan curve for it not making too much noise.

With no overclock I used to set the fans at 60% for 60° and 100% for 70° which made the GPU run at 62° max in most scenarios. I believe core clock don't boost as much past 63° so it was a good setup.

With OC the temps will raise over 60° too often and the GPU makes too much noise. I tried to lower the fan curve and obviously I get higher temps but the core clock don't seem to throttle.

I have some airflow in the case but it's not great.

So I have a few questions:
- what temperature would you let the GPU run in such an OC config?
- what fan curve would you apply?
- at what temperature do the GPU really stop boosting at max / throttle?
- knowing that I got a GPU with no thermals pads (issue with first batches), is my OC safe?

Thank's for any answer.

What I always do. Setup 2 profiles and hotkey them. 1 for vidya and 1 for everything else. For the vidya profile it's overclocked and set fan speed around 55%. For the non vidya profile I just leave everything stock including auto fan.

GPU boost starts downclocking around 60c. Depending on airflow/cooling you'll have to adjust a set fan speed accordingly.

You say it has no thermal pads, i’d Personally buy thermal pads and add them myself to the main areas that need it. I’d also increase case airflow to pull the hot air away from the card to drop temps. Look into noctua or phanteks case fans with high air flow, and if pulling through radiators filters etc look for static pressure with good airflow. The oc seems fine if it’s not crashing and not artifacting but the card sounds too hot for my personal liking.

Thank's I'll do it, seems a lot easier to manage. But what's vidya? Couln't find a Google answer ^^

With a more silent oriented fan curve (50% @ 60° / 65% @ 70°) I get 68° in benchmarks. You wouldn't feel comfortable running these temps?

I have a very small case with two 140mm Noctuas that I run around 1200 rpm, I can't do more. I will add thermal pads and change thermal paste in a near future.

Due to gpu boost decreasing in speed at that temp is why I don’t like it. I’d rather it much lower at the first decrease step if not even cooler.

Strangely enough I don't see the boost going down too much: while core clock goes up to 2080 and remains steady at 2050 when cooled, it goes down only to 2000-2012 when hot. Going a step back (+200 to +150) only gives 1°C with same -50Mhz "throttling". Performance wise, I'm still way above what I can achieve with stock config (running @ 1870 - 1898 max).

Will try long game sessions to see if I get the GPU to really throttle.

So I have a few questions:

- knowing that I got a GPU with no thermals pads (issue with first batches), is my OC safe?

75c.

None. I'd set the fans manually to 100% before gaming.

True thermal throttling starts above 94c.

Should be just fine with the fans at 100%.

Idk what fans you are running but mines produce unbearable loudness @ 100%

A few tests made yesterday showed the OC config get unstable in long gaming session / benchmarks when reaching 66°C+. Then it appeared that the GPU (OCd or not) wouldn't cool itself properly (meaning avoiding building heat and hitting the 65°C degree mark) below 70% on the fans. Also it showed that the OC configuration only produces 1 or 2 °C more than stock, but that difference isn't small regarding fan speed and noise.

I guess the only silent configuration relies on downgrading the graphic settings in games or adding Vsync so GPU can run cooler. I would have liked to run the GPU at 50% fan but that does not seem possible in AAA games.

Great airflow and thermal pads added to the card would let you run the card at low fan speeds in gaming. My 1080 ti uses 40 percent fan speed at a max temp of 53 celsius gaming.

Really? I just searched "vidya" and found the answer. Anyway, it's an old slang term and meme for video games.
