Well, Dude. I know you're talking about joysticks, but I was using xbox 360 controller in BF:BC2 and in comparison to keyboard and mouse, I was amazing.... (Just in comparison, Not in reality lol).

However, I was using Xpadder for this because I couldn't get the controller to work in game and by the time I was going to try it out on BF3, Beta ended.

I LOVED Flying the helicopter this way.... I wasn't even paying attention to my kdr like I usually do, Just trying to destroy tanks and protect the objective lol. So there's my suggestion.... The only thing I would get the joystick for is the jets, But the gamepad is godly for helicopters.

I own a Saitek AV8R-01 joystick that I specifically bought when I won a copy of H.A.W.X. 2 awhile back.  I did try it during the beta but had some problems getting all of the controls working on it.  BF3 didn't recognize some of the buttons being pressed and I couldn't configure it so I don't know whether I'll be using it with the final game or not.  Also, I ended up turning either left or right infinitely until I disconnected it (and it is calibrated properly in Windows).

I'm using the xbox controller in the Beta. It works really well for the helicopter, the jet however, I get confused.

I don't think it was really designed for a joystick... Same problem as BC2 had where it may have been expecting only a console controller. Since you can't edit the config files directly it's really an unfriendly way of mapping things to a joystick.

I never actually got to fly with the stick but it was idiotic in how they were trying to use it for movement (which you find with consoles only) and you couldn't unmap it at all. Very unfriendly design for PC specific gamers.

Same. I have a wireless 360 controller, but I leave the charger plugged into the usb port, so when I start to fly, I can pick it up, and it will already be on (It doesn't shut up while charging), and then when I die, I hop back over to the mouse. A joystick for me is a waste. I barely ever fly, but the controller suits me well.

You see, in a PROPER PC-based game with proper programming and input coding, a real joystick will blow away a console gamepad any day of the week/month/year/decade/century. The problem is there aren't many proper PC games anymore, and this doesn't appear to be one. Everything from re-using the same commands (reload also enters guns? Also swaps kits? Come on DICE!) to mapping gamepad axes to movement and aim instead of leaving them to flight, indicates this is NOT a true PC game at heart. It may have been designed to take advantage of higher end PC hardware to run better graphics, but that's it.

So far it's closer to a console port than a PC game, just with better graphics and such. It behaves like console games, which is sad.

You won't be able to use a joystick unless we can get DICE to give us the same control options BF2 has.
it would take companies that sell joysticks to pay DICE to get them to do it.

Dug out my Saitek Cyborg Evo from the BF2 days and it was working fine in the beta.  I did find a similar control screen in BF3 but it took forever to get all the buttons assigned correctly (not as easy as BF2).   The joystick still worked great after all these years but implementation in the game is definitely worse than BF2.

I'll be using my HOTAS Warthog as well along with my CH pedals if it'll all work with BC3.  I know I can map the stick and throttle to be seen as one controller via TARGET - but not sure if it'll like the pedals being seperate.   My old CH setup was mapped as one device via the CH Control Manager software and it worked great in BF2 - so much fun to fly the choppers.

    Logitech Extreme 3D Pro ftw!

First time I played Skyrim I followed a rabbit into a woddy area on a snowy mountain and punched the poor thing to death and got lost.
