Hey everyone!

New folder here...

the last few nights I've been folding for the entire night while i'm sleeping and while I'm in bed I crank the fan on my GTX 570 to 85% (max).  I also will fold my Q8400 at the same time...neither the vid card or cpu are OC'd.

It's worked fine and my card stays at relatively good temps (60s) considering it's folding for 8 or 9 hrs...but today when I woke up I noticed that my cpu had bsod and had the "driver...blah blah" error...

I've seen that in the past...usually it means there's a new driver or something...but I have 266.58 so....here's the big question....do you guys think that I could have BSOD from the cpu and not the vid card?  The card is up to date and runs at good temps (for folding) whereas the cpu has stock cooling and even though it's not OC'd maybe it's too much for it overnight?

also a little more info...I've run memtest and prime95 both in the past and both were very successful...though this could have been about half a year ago...though I've read folding is a really good way to determine if it's stable or not...just strange that the bsod had an error that stated something about a driver....

alright I am running speedfan and it looks like all four cores get quite hot while running SMP2...I could easily see my computer BSOD'ing because of this....is there anyway to increase the fan speed of the cpu?  I have it plugged into the mobo...

What are you system specs? Mainly looking for your PSU.

Use the insert image button, then after it is in place select it and link it back to your stats page. I just tried it above it worked.

Good job on your EOC stats. Hint: the hourly chart is also fun to watch.

You won't get much out of your dual core. I suggest running the unicore cpu client for grins and giggles... it's all for science. If you're running the smp, then the 570 could be taxing the cpu. You need to leave one core open for the gpu (thus the unicore suggestion). Be sure to use Precision and crank those shaders up. I was using 1460 shaders on my 470 but not sure about the 570.

oh alright here we go:
I have a 650w corsair psu and the Q8400 is actually quad core...but so what you guys are saying is I should be running either the gpu or the smp2...but not at the same time?

also something else interesting I found in the event log...I seem to have an error saying "your computer has rebooted due to a bug check"....I researched it slightly and someone mentioned on some forum about ram...but memtest was good for me...though I have 6gb of ram...4gb are 2 of the same corsair sticks and the other 2gb are 2 new corsair sticks that were from a previous build that I'm using...could having different ram (even though same brand) cause a bsod?

Not sure now which driver it was, but a while back I had random driver related BSODs. Sometimes half an hour after I started folding on the gpus, sometimes it took a week. Not sure which driver I used back then, and which one I´m using atm (and is rock stable).
I´ll let you know when I get back home
edit: the one that´s rock solid for me now is 266.58, so you may have a different issue there

I would run smp2 with 3 cores and leave the fourth for the gpu. Sorry, I searched for Q8400 and saw a picture of a dual core so I assumed.

Come to think of it, I ran my i5-750 with all four cores and 2 gpus with no problems so don't worry about. With the quad cores, I don't think the fermis drag on the cpu that much.

Re:BSOD During Folding... 2011/04/09 19:03:52 (permalink)
I guess it could be an overheating situation...

alright something else could be goin on...I was just folding only with my GTX 570 and the run of the mill single core processor and boom after a few hrs I come back downstairs to another bsod...so it can't be the SMP...

The problem is I never BSOD until I started folding...though I can game for like 10 hrs straight...prime95 and memtest are both solid...

One thing I recall is that I had put in two new sticks of ram that weren't being used to get to 6gb of ram...though it's been fine for about a month...

idk if this helps but the BSOD said "Driver_IRQL_NOT_LESS_OR_EQUAL" and "ndis.sys - address FFFFF8800147787A"

anyway if someone could help me out with some info that would be great...I really want to start folding basically every time I'm not gaming...but this is really off putting :(

I wouldn't worry too much about it unless it happens all the time. In the 2 years I've been folding I have got the driver error over a dozen times. I have found some GPU don't like certain work units.  If you are getting this error all the time then we need to do something about it.
Turn off Aero. Make sure your performance is set to high in the control panel. Make sure auto updates are off. Little things like that.

Folding whatever I can :o)

well the thing is it has happened twice now today...even though the past week I've been folding no prob...

here's one really big thing I'm noticing...both times it seems to be as it's sending a finished WU??

Using Tracker? Try the download clients option again. It will give you a warning that it will delete all progress so make sure you finished all wus before redownloding.

I have HFM....is that the same?  The reason I'm saying that it's when it's sending is because when I reboot it says that it's sending and a new WU usually starts up after the BSOD reboot...

This is what he ment by tracker. If your not using this program, it's the easiest way to set up folding.

Actually tracker is a misnomer because it runs your clients but it doesn't do a good job of tracking, so I still use HFM for ppd and such. Try switching over to it when you get the chance. The bulldog posted the link above.

The BSOD must occur after it finishes uploading the results because your EOC stats are looking good. Perhaps they occur when clearing the queue.

It's where your sig gets your stats from. The cookie monster already linked it for you above.

ah ok lol...yeah I tried that tracker program but idk I can't seem to get it to start through that...just seems easier for me to run it without the tracker...

I'm going to fold for the night and track it with hfm like i've been doing...I'm not going to run either the cpu or smp though...just gpu for the night to try to eliminate the fact that it could be conflicting when the two run together...

I'll let you guys know if it crashes in the morning :P

Alright no crash/bsod this morning. That was with just the gpu...before it came from having both gpu and cpu or smp running. I dont know if having them on at the same time can cause errors or not.

One thing I didnt mention is that I use smp2 which I guess is beta. I had to set it up via cmd prompt and whatnot. I figured everyone uses that.

Im going to run smp with gpu for around an hr and ill let you guys know what happens. It could just have been some bad folds maybe?

*update* Alright so it's still running along...I'm guessing it may have been a messed up WU or something that I was sending with the BSOD's....if anything else happens i'll let you guys know...thx for all the help everyone and happy folding :)

i'm a new user, and i'm also having BSOD issues, but idk if for the same reasons.

i DLd the CPU and GPU client. though i'm running Win7 64bit, the DLer says it's for 32bit x86 OS, the description in the DL says windows vista/7. Figured this was ok.

so i tried CPU folding, and i saw the icon in the notification area. just for giggles, i opened multiple cores for folding, 2 to be exact. that wasn't good. BSOD. then i tried just one core, after less than 1/2 hr BSOD. i noticed someone mention we could run folding with a single core, so i'm wondering if i DLed the right clients. 6.23 and 6.41 respectively i believe.

i don't even know what SMP2 is when u guys mention it. what doe that fold off of?

so i tried the GPU folding as well. i left it overnight as it looked fine for the first 10 min until my comp's display turned off (i'm in high performance mode, so no sleep mode). should i leave the display on all night as well?

note, i am OCd. specs are in my MRs.

Download F@H GPU Tracker V2. So much easier to use. If you are crashing you may not be stable, or something is overheating.

i'm stable now! well.. for now. running both GPUs on the 590 and SMP on my i7-990x =D. still gotta look up on how SMP works, cuz i set the amount of cores to 4, but it only shows as a singular SMP client, i figure 1 fold takes up the processing power of 4 cores instead of just 2. think it's good to run all 6? hmm

Guinibee, if you want to know what the root cause was, when Windows 7 crashes it creates a Dump file located on your machine.

This file is located (typically) at C:\Windows\Minidump\  and has a .dmp extension.  You can open this file with a debug editor of your choice and read out the logs to find the root cause of your crash.

Here's a link if you'd like to try it yourself:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/315263

Alternatively, I'm (unfortunately) very familiar with these dumps and have all the tools to read them if you can upload your dmp file here or post somewhere and send me a link.
