The reason auto's get more mileage then the manuals now is due to popular demand. Most manuals are geared at 4.10+ gearing now, and the auto's are 3.23-3.55. Gearing makes a huge difference in MPG mostly in highway/freeway MPG. I think my bf's moms civic (2013) has a 6-speed auto and the tallest gear is 2.73. I could be wrong, but if I remember my rpm to mph = gear ratios it sounds about right. If you look, it's a slow thing that's been happening the past ~8 years or so. Look at the 2000-2006 insight in the way the manual always got 10 or more mpg, and the civics were rated for higher as well (92-95 vx isn't a fair comparison, as it has lean burn which gives it a HUGE advantage). The racing crowd in general likes the shorter gearing in manuals due to acceleration vs top end purposes. I do wish my insight had 3.55 or 3.73 gears available, because driving in the city or in stop and go is insufferable because of the 3.23 gearing that it currently has.

gravedigger78 If I was a commuter who was frequently in stop and go traffic I would want an Automatic. If I was an F1 driver I would want one of those fancy double clutch auto thingys. When I am off roading I wouldn't trade my Manual trans trucks for the world. My daily driver would have to be a manual. It is just to much fun. I will always be in the gear I want to be in. Oh yeah and I love when the EPA disclosure says "actual mileage will vary" which basically means "our estimates are completely inaccurate". For those who say autos get better gas mileage than manuals nowadays, I am skeptical. I know for some it will be true but those cars are few and far between.
The autos that get better gas mileage are the 8 speed versions. Like the new Vette has an 8 speed auto and the trans itself is lighter then the manual. Most companies are going this direction with autos.

I am glad we are seeing Automatics with 6+ gears and they should get better gas mileage than an auto or a manual with less gearing. Like I said earlier though the entire Auto Vs Manual transmission is soooo very case. The vast majority of all autos I have ever driven never shifted well. The only autos that I have driven that were good was a 2007 BMW and I do not remember its exact model and the other is a 2014 Ford F150. Besides that I only have experience with ,I would say, 2006 or older vehicles. The 2014 Ford Focus that my boss owns in the base model S version with the 5 speed manual gets about 42mpg. The EPA managed to estimate 26/36 mpg so who knows how they are getting that. It depends how you drive and what not and the engine and car specifically. I have a 2004 Corolla as my daily driver with the 5 speed manual. If I drive really light I can get 35 mpg and if I drive like boy ricer and can get less than 25 mpg, true story. I still like my manuals because I can do the maintenance myself.

When I got my 09 SRT Chally I got an auto, for convenience but mostly because I suffer from chronic lower back pain. An 80 mile commute to work sealed the deal. But one of the first things I did was to mod the auto-stick shifter to look like a standard.

RainStryke Not really sure why you would want a automatic to race a car or run it on a performance basis... For every day vehicles where people might be looking for a more comfortable ride, you will definitely want a CVT transmission.
Because they are actually faster.
What about for drifting?
Drifting is taking the slowest way around the track possible, so, you win that argument. ;) A built up auto setup wins the acceleration debate. With an auto, you get quicker shifts and more torque due to the torque converter converting higher engine RPM horsepower into lower RPM torque. This is especially true for a car with power adders.

There is not even an argument you can make for Automatic transmissions as far as maintenance is concerned. Manuals are simpler and easier to maintain and way less expensive. I can change a clutch no problem. I have done 4 of them in my life. I am to stupid to work on an automatic and my wallet isn't deep enough for the parts/labor.

Its a lot cheaper to fix than an automatic transmission. That you can do yourself with ease.

Yes it is. But if you ever do have a serious automatic problem, I have found it better in the long run ( to dig deep, take out a loan or beg borrow and steal ) to buy and have installed a new one (performance cars anyway). And by a good transmission shop!

Flappy Paddle gearboxes are not manuals. Yes they have a clutch system, but does not require you to move your leg and take your hand off the steering wheel to grab a stick and shift to the next gear. These are automatic transmissions.

gravedigger78 I know people claim modern autos get better gas mileage, but I always beat the estimated MPG when I drive real light in mine.
That's the problem with auto vs manual, the auto estimated MPG is pretty much what you're gonna get, where as a manual can get varying mpg based on when you shift and how much you coast. You can also, more easily, use the engine to brake you car which cuts down on wear on the pads and rotor.
You know coasting a manual trans actually uses more fuel. http://www.popularmechanics.com/cars/alternative-fuel/news/coasting-in-neutral-fuel-economy Only time I go out of gear is in the snow or icy conditions as the trans will keep pushing the car. <--- auto trans.

They have a manual mode where you shift the gears. you move the shifter from "D" to "M" and have full control of the shifts at all times. Leave it in first and you will bang off the rev limiter all day unless you shift it into second. It will not do it for you. It will do a few automated shifts at certain times, like if you have it in top gear and come to a stop, it will put itself in 1st so you are ready to go when you hit the gas and not in 6th or whatever number of gears it has. The control over what gear you are in is no different than a manual.

This is more misinformation. It is easier to downshift(unless you have a manual with rev matching then it is the same) in a tiptronic/dual clutch since you don't have to heal/toe shift. It is a simple couple bumps of the stick or paddle to drop into a lower gear. We are NOT talking about your grandmothers '84 buick. We are talking about modern autos.

It takes no skill to click a button, a frickin kid could do that. If you drive an auto, its not driving, its laying there and moving a wheel a bit, there's no thinking, no skill, nothing.
please tell that to all the F1 and rally drivers, they sure seem to have no skill what so ever. They are just laying in that reclined seat moving the wheel a bit doing nothing, anyone could do that ![](https://forums.evga.com/upfiles/smiley/001_rolleyes.gif)

ARCTIC_EAGLE You can also, more easily, use the engine to brake you car which cuts down on wear on the pads and rotor.
We are talking about modern autos.![](https://forums.evga.com/upfiles/smiley/cursing.gif)
LOL, way too prove why autos are crap, it takes ZERO skill, click a button and lets go rice. Any moron can get in an auto and drive it, literally anyone, a kid could do it without any trouble. If the government outlawed autos 99.99% of the idiotic drivers on the road would be gone.

kram36 Flappy Paddle gearboxes are not manuals. Yes they have a clutch system, but does not require you to move your leg and take your hand off the steering wheel to grab a stick and shift to the next gear. These are automatic transmissions.
they also have an auto mode on most models so you can eat that burger you just grabbed at the drive though while your getting back on the express way without dropping it in your lap![](https://forums.evga.com/upfiles/smiley/001_tt2.gif)
kram36 That's a nice trans and exactly what -ZS-Carpenter was getting at in the op of this thread. These quick shifting autos are not just for Ferrari, Lambo, Porsche and such anymore. These are coming to rather affordable cars now.

I was going to say the same thing about you. You think because F1 has an auto that means its better for a family sedan. That's what we're talking about, no one here is driving an F1 car too work. Autos are complete crap, go look at Kram's Beetle its 0-60 time is the same as a S2000 of the same year, why? Because of that amazing hunk of junk transmission. When your Beetle's being overtaken by a rice in his S2000 because of your inability to drive a stick, there's a problem.

As said over and over, modern autos can be faster (edit: accelerating) than manuals and can get better mileage. Eagle, you are off your rocker if you think the transmission is what makes the driver. The driver is the driver and the transmission is a different subject. For example, F1 racer versus sunday driver is the DRIVER not the transmission. Eagle, I drive an auto civic and fuel truck (manual of course). I want to see you keep bragging about your skill and idots like me with auto cars after you try to drive a big rig with split shift 13 gears and no synchros.
