You can get a paintball gun if your one of those people that want to stop some one but not kill them.

Depends on your home layout. is there any fatal funnels? Are there children in rooms that you need to worry about in certain bullet flight paths? That might determine whether you want super sonic rounds, or subsonic rounds. In any case... I would suggest a shotgun for 3 reasons. 1st, they are reliable. 2nd, you don't need to aim all that well. 3rd, the sound of a shotgun racking will have tremendous psychological effects on the person entering your home. 2nd suggestion, a Glock pistol. They are notoriously reliable, and 9 mill ammo is cheap.

Ah yes...Glocks, the volvo of the firearm world...
I find them ugly...*chuckle* they are reliable though....I prefer a weapon which is reliable and elegant...which is why I like my 1911s...Racking a pistol is just as effective a deterrent as a shotgun is.. people know the sound.

So finally have my FOID, and I need advice on what gun is the best for home defense. It needs to be legal in the state of IL :]
I grew up in the Detroit area and I know exactly what it feels like to be terrorized by the possibility of a break in, many times we had attempted break ins but I would chase them off with one of my geeky katanas or my father would chase them off with his bat.
Luckily there was always a numbers in our favor situation because our house had a total of 3 capable men of which 2 were almost always home at the same time. Now it's just my girlfriend and I. We don't live in the worst area of IL but we live next to some very unsavory neighborhoods and crime has started to leak into our area recently. I just want to make sure that if one of us is caught alone we have a way to defend ourselves
Also yes I have heard the whole you have a better chance of getting shot if you use a gun, because you are more likely to fight then run. However my fear is that one of us may not have the ability to run.
I would say a shotgun too myself, if its just for a home defense type thing, BUT i will say that if i broke into a house and some maniac ran after me with a Katana, i def would'nt think it was geeky and i would probably run outta there faster than if the dude had a gun!!! the first thing i would think is "this guy has gotta be crazier than me flailing a Katana at me and if he owns that thing he probably knows how to use it" Buh-Bye!!!! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V__Ierrz0hQ cold steel katana demonstration vid

For home defense I wouldn't touch a poly body. If you get rushed then at least you have a heavy body to pistol whip them with

You'll get as many answers as there are people alive. Only from the dead would anyone really know. For myself I've always thought that without the experience of knowing how to use the weapon, your better off with a baseball bat. When I lived in Alaska there were many opinions on what works best in grizzly country, a long barrel 44mag or a shotgun. It didn't really matter if the bear got the jump on you. Are you going to answer your front door holding a shotgun or maybe having something in your pocket might be more practical. A gun that makes the most sence to me is something small and lightweight that can be carried and fired from within a pocket. An automatic or something with a hammer can get caught on clothing, so a hammerless revolver works best in that situation.

Like some others have said, a Mossberg 500 Persuader is an excellent shotgun. 7+1 12 gauge shells should be more than enough for a home defense situation. My Persuader was the 2nd gun I purchased (first being a .22 rifle). I keep a Taurus 24/7 OSS .45 sitting right on top of my gun safe within arm's reach of my bed. You don't need a rifle for home defense, unless you like killing your next two neighbors as collateral damage. A shotgun or a handgun are the only options you should even think about. If someone breaks into your home, you aren't going to be all calm and badass about shooting them; you are going to be pumped on adrenaline, which is going to make your accuracy take a nose dive. A short(er) barreled shotgun would seem ideal for this situation considering its hallway sized spread will take up some of your slack from your reduced accuracy. A pump or semi-auto is up to you; both are going to server their purpose, but you better be familiar with your gun and its quirks. You can also go for a handgun, as they are small and easy to maneuver around doors and corners if you have to. They also have the advantage of having significantly more rounds than a shotgun. However, the trade off for that is the lack of spread a shotgun gives you. During your adrenaline rush, are you going to be able to hit the intruder(s) with a good enough shot placement to disable them? Practice, practice, and practice. What I like to do to simulate an adrenaline rush is run for a quarter mile or so and then pick up one of my guns and start shooting targets. I don't know how much it will help if I need to actually shoot someone breaking into my house, but I'd rather have unnecessary practice than none at all. There are people on these forums that have been shooting guns for longer than I've been alive; I'm sure they have much more and probably better advice than I can give you, but I just wanted to express what I have learned so far. Good luck on choosing a firearm.

I've been firing guns for over 40 years....there's too much to know and not enough time in the day to learn. Never point a gun at something you're not willing to shoot, and ALWAYS assume a gun is loaded..even if you 'know' it's not. Best advice ever about safety... Other than that, I think gun purchases boil down to what you like....seriously....if you don't like 1911s, but like Glocks, buy them...if you like Mossberg and not Remington, but Mossberg...etc....most of the firearm manufacturers are ok....

You should get this shotgun. AR-15 Style 12 gauge shotgun. This is thing is something special. Never seen a shotgun mixed in a assault rifles frame. Check out the video down below.

Defense always should be layered. 1. Properly secured windows and doors. If doors or windows are open for the summer they need security screens or bars. If fancy an audible alarm for each as well. 2. Shotgun in kitchen and bedroom during awake hours. 3. Pistol and shotgun in bedroom during sleeping hours. Shotgun "honey I hear a noise". Pistol last option. The shotgun and pistol make/model dont matter much. The home defense strategy is the most important thing. When awake, shotgun is best, dont want to shoot through walls for fear of friendly fire. Asleep with no children... fire away. Unless you are in a shared dwelling ie... apartment, duplex, townhouse, ect.... If a shared dwelling; shotgun only. Again, strategy and situational awareness are far more important than the make/model of the gun. Manslaughter conviction from a loose round is no picnic.
