Doing research everything pointed towards the 7970 Gigahertz edition cards being the same thing as R9 280X cards, so I took the leap and flashed my ASUS Matrix 7970 to the ASUS Matrix R9 280X bios that was on techpowerup. Just needed to make sure the clocks and memory speeds were right between the bios. If anything the R9 280X has 50hz slower vram settings. Free upgrade sidegrade...whee.

So if it is a slight bit slower- you going to flash it back ?   ...or is there some benefit to keeping it on the 280x bios ?

I'll probably edit the vram back to 1650 and keep it at the latest R9 280X bios. Uncertain what they're doing in the R9 280X bios, but given the new audio stuff they talked about it could be sitting in R9 280X and not 7970. I'm not an OCer, so the 50mhz won't kill me either way. As is the ASUS Matrix cards are really aggressive with the clock settings to begin with vs all other 7970/R9 280X cards. They're OCed right out of the box.

I also flashed to 280x bios, works perfect! And there's a slightly performance increase 3D Mark 11, with 1215 core clock and 7000 mem clock from 9600 to 10500!

Brad.. (new audio stuff) my understanding is only the R6 260 rebrand(HD 7790) is getting the audio stuff because it is GCN 2.0 and the R9 290- 290x

The R9 280x will CX with any HD 79XX card as both are DX 11.1 which windows 8 supports and looks killer on BF 4..

    Ah ok, no loss.

One would think they could just do it as GPGPU though like Nvidia does with PhysX. I don't see the need for specific chip to process audio.

If you had to choose, would you take the 280X DC2 or the 280X Platinum Matrix? Thanks
