Got a 1080 resolution 120hz atm. I am not sure when I will upgrade my display, or anytime soon.

I just ordered a new gaming rig, with 980 sli. BUT I may be able to change it to Titan X if I like, but it may be too late.

So I was wondering, which would be the better route?

I'd just stick with 980 SLI personally since it has more power to get that 120hz at 1080 you use and wait it out a few more cards to upgrade since you don't need the extra VRAM for your resolution...unless you use it for things other than gaming that can use the extra VRAM and other features that are specific to the titan cards.

    both are overkill for 1080P.

980 SLI beats the titan x, you're just missing out on more VRAM, which you don't need at 1080P.

    I echo the others response.

Do you even need the additional 980 for 1080p?  I am at 2560x 1600 and dont have any problems running all games maxed out with my 780ti. I would think a 980 can handle 1080p.

I run 1 980 FTW at 1440P and run everything on ultra.

Also.. custom builder? Building a PC is like legos for adults..not complicated. I wonder what premium you're paying for all that ''labor''.

Hell the only reason I'd even suggest the titan is because it would actually be cheaper than 2X980.

If/when that VRAM pooling comes down the line via DX12, you'll be hating life for going single Titan over SLI 980s. Assuming you're using this for gaming purposes of course.

    TITAN X ALWAYS!
But GTX980 SLI look much better inside PC and more performance.

GreenfeuerGot a 1080 resolution 120hz atm. I am not sure when I will upgrade my display, or anytime soon...
    - Intel i7-5930K, 6 x 3.50GHz
    - 2 x (SLI) ASUS STRIX GTX 980 Direct CU 2 OC 4GD5

I always take somehow as a joke when someone has a SLI setup, but plays at only "1080p"; that resolution is kinda for toddlers when you have a "high end" setup like yours and makes no sense at all.

I do have myself a similar build, I got a 5960X, 32GB RAM @ 2666, my mobo is a Gigacrap X99M (mATX) and my GPU's are exactly the same as your list, I have two ASUS Strix GTX 980 and I can tell you those are more than enough for playing without concerns at much higher resolutions than you currently have. Furthermore, even with the stock cooler you can overclock (if desired, but NOT needed at all) those Strix at around 1360 MHz safely.

The monitor I have hooked to those Strix in SLI is an HP ZR30w (2560x1600) and the gaming experience is perfect, I got 130 plus FPS in games like Battlefied 4 with Ultra settings and all eyecandy cranked up, and that's more than enough; even with a single Strix 980 can drive my monitor with no problems at all.

So, if you've already decided or ordered that list, it is OK to stay with the pair of Strix, I would even say you don't need to waste money in a second one since you're playing at just 1080p.

From my personal taste, I would only change three things:
    - A better brand PSU... it doesn't needs to be 1200w either.
    - A better/nicer case.
    - Another motherboard.

I have a similar-ish question. I have an ASUS ROG Swift monitor, and I have x3 EVGA GTX 980 Hydro Coppers. Should I trade up for 2 or 3 Titan X Hydro Coppers. (I'm going to eventually go surround with ROG Swifts)

If I was buying today, I would buy a single Titan X over 980 SLI. The 980 SLI will be faster, but the Titan X will most likely be smoother, a little cheaper, and obviously has the advantage of not having to deal with SLI. However, since you already have 980 SLI, they are more than enough for 1080P and I see no reason to switch other than epeen.

I think that is a massive if. While DX12 will have the ability for developers to code SLI for split frame rendering as opposed to alternate frame rendering, it will still be up to the developer to put in the work. Since SFR will be much more difficult to develop than the standard AFR, and AFR SLI support can already be sketch, I wouldn't count on it until I saw it. If I were personally buying, I would never count on seeing pooled VRAM until it actually started happening in several titles.

Given the choice I would likely go for TITANX, due to the higher framebuffer and chance to add a second in the future.

It comes back to your requirements. What do you use the system for??

Do you use it for applications like a) CAD, Filming, or Photography or b) Gaming or c) All of the above. If A or C get the Titan X. Jacob is spot on with frame buffering and future changes to applications and games alike. Also as pointed out 1 Titan X is cheaper than top end 980's.

I'm leap frogging from 690 (+ 590 Aux/PhysX) to Titan X + 750SC (Aux/ PhysX) - long story.  I run two rigs so I always have a fallback system and forever swapping around, out or down when changing the technology.

I had 980 SC for SLI, but I was so disappointed when found out there are only 10-20% games that fully support on SLI and the rest just only partial support or not support SLI.
So I will move to Titan X more than 980 SLI that more expensive than Titan X (2x 980 SC cost around 1200$).
SLI always causes Micro stuttering problem.

    SLI 980 for 1080p.
    DX12 will allow vram sum.
I ran 3x980 for 1080p on my Philips 242G 144Hz for max fluidity, so you are good with 2x980 for sure.

Dx12 won't allow vram combinations, only the people who add that into the games will. I highly doubt most developers will code for that. Most can't even do CF/SLI properly, but we expect them to handle something as complicated as combining Vram from 2 cards? I want to believe that, I do. It's 2015 and games still use 2 cores lol....The only company I see even getting that is EA, and they make horrible games.

OP you already have 2 980's s you might as well enjoy them. You are playing at 1080p, if it was 1440p 120 Hz or 3440x1440 or 4k, I would say the Titan X, but that was only if you had an entire system and was waiting on the GPU's. From your post you already have the entire PC. Along with an incredibly overpowered PSU for a system like that.

I will either find a way, or make one.

Do you do 3d modeling? VFX work? 3d Animation with model rigs that mess with uv's/verts? Rigging? Hair simulation? Cad work? Play at 4k and use 3d Vision? Do you play with Multi displays in surround with 3d vision? If you answered no to all of those then you do not need a TitanX

I think I stay with my setup, thanks alot for all the feedbacks.

Titan X seemse nice and all but alitte research led me to belive its probably best staying sli 980, for my setup that is.

I asked aswell since I though the store I am buying from probably would get Titan X in stock, doesn't seemse that way though, as of yet. - Buying from that store for alot of reasons,
ranging from warranty, to service to the way your able to upgrade through time easy with them, without concern + there prices are fairly fair opposed to other options
with inferior service/warranty. - But that is not the topic just if people suggest other parts beside the point, I would have to say I ain't gonna change that now
I am fairly happy with all my other parts. Just the GPU setup I worried about.

Feel free to contiue writeing,  I haven't picked up my system yet and things may change. But for now, my bet is on sli 980 setup.
Picking it up April 8th if all works out.

Stay on topic however with the gpu talk ;)
