My video card is a GTX 980 Ti SuperClocked+ ACX2.0+ and I'm looking to get a new monitor.  I was going to get a 4K monitor, but they're very very expensive.  Does anyone know if my single video card is strong enough to run games at 4K (on max or near max settings) at 30 to 60 FPS.

Among many others, this review specifically shows some of the frame rates for 4K.  But, you shouldn't really need AA on 4K, so take that into account in their testing.

Is it possible to stay above 30FPS?  Absolutely.  And GSYNC, in theory, would smooth out the dips.  I have not personally used it on 4K, though.  I looked at 4K quite a bit myself, but I ended up staying with the 21:9 format.

I've got a 4K monitor and I'm happy with it but would prefer a 2K monitor if given the choice.

How much smaller does everything look on a 4K monitor?  I'm a chronic migraine sufferer and im scared that if it makes everything too small, my migraines will go into overdrive.

In your case stick with a monitor regardless of resolution that doesn't give you headaches.

There is desktop scaling in Windows 10 that's pretty decent on a single monitor. Desktop scaling will remove the small fonts and small file icons, but you have to customize it to your personal tastes. It's a bit quirky with dual monitors that have different resolutions.(For example I have a 1080p monitor and 2160p monitor.)

Some older games can run in 2160p, but the menus and buttons weren't setup to scale correctly. The biggest offenders that I can think of in this category are Civilization 5 and Sins of a Solar Empire. You won't be able to read the menus and buttons in those games without modding them, or possibly tweaking certain files.

1440p is probably going to be your best bet for now. I would wait until next year for more 2160p options.

    +1 to that
Realistically with current hardware, trying to run 4K with uber detail settings, even with Dual/Triple GPU setups is bad enough in some titles. And to think more games on the horizon will only be more demanding. I'd take 2k and having the ability to max graphic settings out, then 4k and having to lower IQ settings. Just my opinion though! If you're looking to be competitive in online games such as BF4 and such, 4k will really hinder your smooth fluid game-play.

I answered based on what he asked.  Can you run at 4K and stay above 30FPS.  In pretty much every review I have seen the answer is... yes.

And this is where all the subjectivity comes into play.  Whereas I like to keep things at 60FPS, some people are okay with running at 30FPS.  Whereas I love the 21:9 widescreen format, others hate it.   This becomes a very personal decision.  My best advice is to purchase from somewhere with a solid return policy and try it out.  Best Buy has a 40" 4K Samsung TV that offers Chroma 4:4:4 for $700 and I got a chance to see one.  Absolutely stunning, I must admit.  In the end, though, I couldn't maintain 60FPS with a single card on any given game and decided to forgo the purchase.  The guy who had it made the same decision and returned it.  Thankfully, it was painless.  But man was it beautiful.

Try things out and see what works for you.  One million other opinions may not match yours in the end.

It's definitely possible. I have 2x4K monitors hooked up to my Titan X. I realize that your card is not the same, but minus a few CUDA cores and 6GB of RAM, the hardware is quite similar.

I am able to game most games at 4K on a single screen, while having my other screen available for monitoring system performance or whatever else I want to look at. I have most of my games set in a "high" setting. Not quite "Max" on some of the newest games like Witcher 3, but "high" seems to be enough for me. I can get anywhere from 52-58 FPS on Witcher 3 as it's configured. On games like Borderlands 2, 60 FPS no problem (my 4K monitors are of the 28" Upstar cheapie-300 kind.... they max out at 60MHz). Assassin's Creed 4 was also configured for "High" and still had no issue. My card is currently cooled by an EK Water Block which brings the temperature down significantly so it never goes over 52C anymore. Before the water block, it had just the standard Titan X SC shroud (same as reference) and it would shoot up to 83-84C while gaming at those settings.

I've seen mixed reviews on the ACX 2.0 coolers, but I wish you the best of luck... Happy FPS!

    Thanks for the advice.

I'm going to go with a 2K monitor because the 4K ones don't have more than 60Hz and i need a minimum of 75Hz or my migraines go into overdrive.

I found 2 monitors that have really good reviews, only problem is they both have major downsides.  The Acer XB270HU does have G-Sync compatibility, but every batch made before June 2015 is defective in some dramatically bad way (and odds are if i get it now, i'll get a bad one).  The BenQ XL2730Z has less problems but it doesn't offer G-Sync.

So i'm going to wait until the end of the year to buy a 2K monitor in hopes the Acer XB270HU has more distribution so the odds of getting a bad one are lower (diluting the pool).  Maybe something better will be released in this period too.

I've read some complaints from others that say G-Sync makes games unplayable/blurry.  Is this true?  I'm especially interested if this is the case because both monitors im looking at are 144Mhz and i don't know if G-Sync can sync without any artifacts.

For anyone interested in either of the monitors i mentioned, here's my notes:

    Acer XB270HU
    27", 2560 x 1440, 4ms, 144Hz, Flicker Free, IPS Panel, G-Sync
    1x DisplayPort 1.2
Get one dated later than June 2015 or there will be problems ...

    BenQ XL2730Z
    27", 2560 x 1440, 1ms G2G, 144Hz, Flicker Free, Low Blue Light, TN Film, FreeSync (ATI Only)
    1x DisplayPort 1.2, DVI, VGA, 2x HDMI
