Here’s the discussion on the Prime units: https://forums.tomshardwa...3692042/#post-22258294

Just for some context for some people.  "jonny guru" currently works as director of R&D for Corsair.  They have some PSU's made by Seasonic that use the Prime platform, that have a minor, known issue with what are apparently the +12V "sense" wires (thinner, doubled up wires on the 12V pins, used to monitor voltage), where there is noise on that wire.....?

I hate to sound like this, or even say this - but I've never bought Seasonic and probably wont, unless I'm building a generic rig.  I don't know a whole lot about the brand, but I personally consider them a middling product and priced as such.  I'd stick to the brands most commonly used by pc and pc gaming enthusiasts personally - i.e. a Corsair or EVGA...

MY RM1000i blew after about 5 years, and Corsair couldn't find me a replacement, which is how I ended up with a brand new, still shrink-wrapped HX1000i that I am going to sell.  I am CURRENTLY running my PC on EVGA's 1000w G3 and it's working absolutely perfectly.  I WAS running my i7-10700k and Asus z490 F-Gaming Mobo on a EVGA 1000w GQ and it ran perfectly too.  The only real difference being the GQ has the main motherboard ATX connection hard-wired, where the G3 is 100% fully-modular.  Either would work for you, including the 800w.

Seasonic Primes are some of the best.

Fair enough!  As I said I have never used a Seasonic Product in my builds, so it's a somewhat baseless opinion anyway.  :)

From what I understand many of the Corsair AX use the Prime platform.

No prob.

Was just going to say this. And as SeaSonic being an actual manufacturer, I consider them deep in the S tier of considerations. I’ve also used EVGA in the past, no issues but that was back in late 2000s. Unsure of their hierarchy in the naming convention isn’t the G2 the go-to? Like RMx and Focus?

Side subject, is there a specific PCIe grouping on the PSU that the new GPUs need to utilize? I have 3 PCIe in a row and 2 above and I’ve read about “same rail” etc terminology but if there’s a specific benefit when plugging in the 3-8pin cables I’d def follow suit!

I never thought the Focus was all that to be honest.
Depending on your PSU, I would definitely use the individual rails if you could as long there's enough juice for each one. My RM1000i allows me to choose single rail or individual.

Why do you feel that way with the Focus line? I’m not super biased regardless of having one as my current and only looking at replacing it with higher wattage under focus or prime (but the prime having issues with ampere) because I have custom braided cables for SeaSonic/ASUS otherwise I’d be looking at Corsair and EVGA but trying to throw that cable cost towards a 1440p monitor =\

It's anecdotal, both I and a friend have had issues with the Focus line in the past so it's not very high on my list of recommendations.

Thanks for linking that post. I wish I'd looked into transient response more closely before I'd got any of my Prime units. I didn't think I'd have to worry about it. But I'm getting reboots/shutdowns with my 3080 and TX-1000, and it does the same on my older Prime Titanium 750W. I'm looking into getting another PSU,but. ,yeah they're all out of stock.

No BSOD, just hard reset?

Would be interested to hear more about the 12v sense issue Jonny Guru mentions.

Yep, no BSOD, hard reset--and I have Windows automatic reboot disabled. I just upgraded my build from an i7 8700K/Z370 to a Ryzen 5800X/X570 build, thinking that maybe my motherboard was the issue. I panic bought the components I needed, because of stock...and thought everything was fine, until I did a stress test with OCCT's 3D test and had the same issues as my previous build. It passed the first few days I ran the test, but my PC did a hard shut down yesterday. I don't know if that's because of the PSU or maybe this motherboard doesn't try to reboot (I came from an Asus Maximus X Hero Z370 motherboard and went to an Asus Crosshair VIII Dark Hero X570). Either the new motherboard isn't designed to reboot on power loss, or maybe I didn't check the setting for that, I'm not sure. Or maybe my PSU decided to just shut down that time. Before I switched builds, in the last week I was running the previous build, my PC did shut down while it was idle, while I was away.

I think I might pick up an EVGA 850 P2 PSU and see if it fixes it. I'd rather stick to 1000W, but they're pretty much out of stock..

A friend of mine had some issues like that with memory as well. Lower you mem to the 2400 instead of xmp and see if that stabilizes the system.

I had already tried disabling XMP with the RAM in my previous build (Corsair Vengeance LPX 3200 MHz) and it didn't make a difference.

3080 ftw3 EVGA says "Minimum of a 750 Watt power supply.Total Power Draw : 320 Watts"

"But I wouldn't trust a 3080 FTW3 with anything less than a top tier, very high performance 1000w PSU...."

????? was going to get an 850g but guess wait some mo

Mine arrives tomorrow. Going to test with a SeaSonic FOCUS PX750W, 850W, and a PRIME 850W. But I’ll prob undervolt a little and stick with the 850W focus
