Speaking of Troy, I've recently acquired a 3060 Ti and my PPD is ~2m now instead of the 1.3 I was seeing on the hardware I had when I signed up.

Any chance of a remedy?

Sweet - Got the drive from nortfordman, and it's cloning now.  I'll do some testing this evening after I get it booting from the new drive to ensure the error I was seeing was definitely drive bound.

And if so, I will be able to rip out that 7mill PPD for the contest

That means you'll probably pass me during the contest.     I think we might have to cancel the contest immediately...

It comes with great sorrow that I must report that the replacement boot drive sent by notfordman . . .

Works PERFECTLY and my PPD for the contest will be ~ 7 MILLION PPD!! I have been folding on that box now for over 2 hours with NO hitching like the old boot drive was causing.

I pretty much fold everything I’ve got 24/7 so there is no way I can compete with drougnor’s vastly superior folding hardware.  Nothing I can do at this point but wave when he blows by me...

Re: 2020 Time Zone Challenge 2020/12/12 20:28:09 (permalink)
So, I'd like to participate, but I want to make sure I follow the rules.

I'm new to folding so I'm not real sure what my PPD would be because I have no reference to go off of.
Are we required to have our machines folding 24 hours a day for the duration? I'm afraid to run mine if I'm not home awake to monitor it. (For fear of burning the house down)
I would enjoy joining in and folding all day that I am home and awake to keep an eye out. (Probably 8-16 hrs a day every day for the 10 days, no problem.)
I saw it mentioned that it doesn't matter if your rig is in need of an update, but I just want to be sure that I wouldn't be hurting the team I was on.

Any help with my questions is appreciated and hopefully I can join in with you guys!

Thanks,
Terry

Sorry Terry
if I missed something ....but a computer setup on autopilot...FAH...I don't think it's going to operate beyond built in safety backups...
Power bar, default power down settings of the gpu and cpu..

Just my 2 cents...
Just set the computer up without oc and other unnecessary equipment risks or bypasses
I haven't competed before so I will sit and listen to others.
https://sites.google.com/site/timezonechallenge/rules
Part of the rules say
Contest Participation
  • You must fold under your own folding name for team 111065.
  • All folders are expected to fully participate in the contest for its entire duration.
    • If you cannot commit to folding for the entire contest you should not sign up for the contest.
  • You are only allowed to fold under your own folding name.
  • You may not pause, stop or otherwise disrupt your normal flow of work units to gain an advantage.

I think that means 24/7 Terry

Oh well yeah with no OC and light settings, I would have no problem at all with that.

That is what I was asking clarification for. I wasn't sure if the "entire duration" just meant don't sign up and then quit after like day 3, or for example, participate on days 1, 3, 5, 6, 8, & 10, without commiting  to every day.

I, not being familiar at all, assumed the intention of the statement was to fold for the entire 10 days during the normal hours you currently fold while OC'ed, without disruption of your "normal flow".

I can see what you are saying though, just set it up on basic settings and let it run nonstop for 10 days. I wouldn't have a problem with that. Although that seems like you could just ask each team how much their systems are valued at and biggest number wins. I would assume there would be some variable involved in the form of individual skill at tweaking their rig to get more out of it than "stock value".

Again I have no idea. That was just my assumption and I wanted to get clarification from someone who knew.

Thanks for the reply,
Terry

That sounds good to me. I'd like to participate however I can.

I'm not gonna put up any numbers to speak of, but I'd like to try and do better than I should for my build.

Re: 2020 Time Zone Challenge 2020/12/13 04:40:15 (permalink)
I would think 8-16 hours a day would qualify as a normal work flow, especially if that is your normal work flow. Generally speaking heat is your enemy on the hardware so just don’t push it. Don’t use your CPU or just 50% if you must. Run your GPU at default clocks or lower. The challenge is not supposed to stress people out. Ppd estimates are just that. No one will get spanked if they are way off, except maybe drougnor, he may get spanked.
Terry find out what your rig can do within your comfort zone and sign up. No down side to that.

As I mentioned in my PM make sure you have a passkey set up so that you start getting the QRB (quick return bonus) points.  It seems you've got a good approach - fold what you've got but there is no expectation beyond that.  Most importantly have fun with it!

Sounds like this contest might cost me a few spots on the team rankings. I might just have to see if I can procure another card to fold with...

Hope everyone is having fun and stays safe this holiday season.

i sadly am down to a 2080 to fold on at this point had to give my 670FTW to my nephew for his new build to help him get up and running. After i had to fix it, thank you EVGA for the support in getting the card up and running again.
