Do you plan on becoming a regular Blade-smith?  The industry can be rather lucurative.  I collect knives.  A lot of people have simply become straight up Blade-smiths and quit their regular job.  PM me if you'd be interested in doing some custom work.  I've had an idea for a knife but regular smiths are way too expensive.

Another thing to give consideration is becoming a member of the American Bladesmith Society.  Even if you don't join they are probably the biggest wellspring of knowledge in the U. S.

I would never quit my job to just make blades.  Its simply a hobby.
As far as the ABS, I thought about making a blade that conforms to their standard (shave-destroy 2 2x4's- shave, bend to 90° without breaking), but never actually becoming a member.  Its a very hard market to break into.  I enjoy the CNC as well, so mixing both worlds is truly satisfying.  Currently have that 20-some-odd layer that I forged on the CNC now on that ghetto made grinder attachment of mine.

not really into folders.  Not that I couldn't, but nothing like holding a full tang hunk of metal in your hands.

This is true, but don't do it in N.Y. unless you're in the woods or near a stream with a valid hunting/fishing license.
keep up the good work!

Powder coated paint knife makes it more sexier also

like so?

Are you ball endmilling your tapper for the edge?  First picture really looks like it.  If so doing before HT or after?  Tough milling if after.

It still appears like camo in the picture to my eyes :D. It may just be the combination of the picture and my eyes and/or the darkness of my monitor.  The pattern seems camo like with browns, greens, and tans. But anyway. It's still very beautiful wood handle.

yes, to ball milling.  I was doing the milling before the heat treat, but the edge (so far) seems to thin to heat treat properly.  So I am trying the heat treat, temper, and then mill.  Carbide still mills it nicely.  Wife doesn't like all the noise it makes though...

So all the layers have been forged, ground, machined, and cut into shape.

Time to start grinding...

How are you orientating the knife to mill. IE do you vice with edge up and mill both sides, or present one face the do the other.  Looking at the latest picture it looks like you are milling both sides due to what I can tell of the burrs.  Possibly laying it down will cut out a lot of the noise, but then you face having to fixture for second side to account for angels on the first side.

Overall I am impressed and a hobby that i have always wanted to get into ever since I watched the horses getting shoed.  Looks like you have a nice little workshop and produce some nice product.

Re: Made some more metal things. Looking for opinions. 2017/01/13 08:29:06 (permalink)
Nomadre, I use a fixture plate.  I orientate everything based on the holes in the knife, and the edge of the fixture plate.  So I face one side of the knife at a time.

Currently cutting the above knife on the grind

Did a quick etch and found an interesting pattern:

There is only 2 different steels, which I didn't expect any etching lines being the same steel, but alas there is.  Its going to be very interesting.

Here we can see the 1095 steel core cutting edge.

I will admit to stopping by Nateman's humble hobby shop, and I can openly say that the work that went into building his workshop and all of the machines that he has is nothing short of outstanding.

SAN MAI is COMPLETED.  PICTURE TIME...

The high carbon steel in the middle of the knife was gun-blued, so it helps protect against rust by accelerating a patina on it.  You can see the stripe along the entire perimeter of the knife.  Months of work.

Great Craftmanship fo sure

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

Some interesting patterns showing up in the initial machining of the 1200 layer fighting knife:

This should be my first successful Damascus fighting knife.  If I had to guess at the hardness its at least as hard as cobalt steel. The only thing that will drill a hole, or cut this knife is carbide itself.
