Has anyone ran any type of hose for natural gas lines?  Things i read said you need special hose.  I am running through propane cans more then I care for in my forge.  Plus I want to turn my generator into natural gas.  Id love to have something lowes has since I have one a few miles away, but if I have to turn to the internet...so be it.

is natural gas corrosive?  is it any different then propane?  It does scare me a little to mess with the infrastructure of the house.  There is black iron pipe running to my furnace.  I planned to shut off the valve, install a T connector with 1 end going to the forge, the other to the generator.  Opposite sides of the house sadly.  I would hate to have all that steel pipe with all the fittings, vs a single hose run.  Less chances for leaks.  genny would only be used on VERY rare occasions if the power goes out, but the forge is much more often.

exactly, natural gas is already in the house.  No reason not to utilize it instead of going back to refill all the propane canisters.  They tend to run out at the worst times.  I have no idea if the pressure of my natural gas is equal to that of a propane can.  I tend to use around 15 psi for normal forging, 30 psi for forge welding (to get over 2000°F).  Anything more then 30 psi and that thing turns into a flame thrower.   Just made a huge O1 and L6 Damascus billet.

you are talking greek to me.  Dumb that down a bit.  And yes, the little ones occasionally help.

the PSI, is the gauge I bought from lowes, that shows some PSI (for compressed air I think?)

So what you are telling me, is that natural gas supplied to the house, does not equal that of what a standard BBQ grill propane canister is?

Found this in a blade forum:

Natural gas forges run well, and are the industrial standard. It is far more economical than propane, and will produce enough heat to melt steel.
They don't run on atmospheric burners (venturi) beyond very small flames, because the gas pressure is too low. On that subject, most residential gas pressure is so low that it won't run a forge at all. You need at least 2-3 PSI and a 2" inlet line to the house/shop. Residential gas lines are 3/4" to 1" and the pressure is less than 1/2 PSI ( don't confuse the 5-7 WC pressure rating with PSI). If your son has well head pressure gas, like the folks with gas wells on their property,or commercial gas, then he is in great shape to use NG for his blown forge. At 5-8 PSI ( 150-200 WC), I guess he could even run a venturi burner.

    SO:
Yes a forge can run on NG
No, it won''t run a venturi burner.
It will run a blown burner if the supply has enough volume/pressure.
People with well heads get free natural gas and enough pressure - I hate them

Even the propane kicks off if I just try and make it a flame thrower, but no worries, probably just have to get some large standing tanks, or just suck it up and stick with the grill propane's.  I have 4 of them for this purpose, and 1 on the grill in case, but 1 lasts a whole entire day.  I do combat the frost, by having the canister in a large tub of water.

you sound sad? i mean, you have enough metal to create your own store ammunition. Anywho, i was about to post no to rubber since anything can punture it and cause a big bang if it leaks, making it a big hazard and i think it is corrosive.

Those who abuse power, are nothing but scumbags! The challenge of power is how to use it and not abuse it. The abuse of power that seems to create the most unhappiness is when a person uses personal power to get ahead without regards to the welfare of others, people are obsessed with it. You can take a nice person and turn them into a slob, into an insane being, craving power, destroying anything that stands in their way.

I am more sad by the fact that I dont have the pressure to use natural gas.  I can still run it to convert my generator, but sadly the forge must still use propane.

Maybe you should just look into using a different burner unit if you want to use natural gas. Would a pool heater burner work? Mine is 500,000 btu.

I have no idea how to calculate the BTU's of my home made burner.  I know when I crank that sucker I can get 2200°F, which is plenty to forge weld steel.  On craigst list looking for larger propane tanks.

hmmm...how thick is the tube you are using Nate? Check the dimensions of how thick flamethrowers tubes are made. How big is the tank and BTUs you will be using is a factor. Not a big fan of this subject but there is something off for sure.

I think I came up with an idea.  There is a black iron gas pipe fitting behind my dryer.  I guess back in the day it was gas - because it is electric now.  So I can find a hose a few feet long, and try out my spare burner.  If it throws flames like the propane then I will further consider it.  If it doesn't... then I will just purchase a 100lbs tank of propane.

Use a metal flex line. Rubber wont work. Has poors in it and gas can possibly leak out and also sealing the ends will never happen for gas. Remember gas has no smell. Even the smallest leak can create a huge problem.

You can use gastight though or wardflex. Thats flexible gas line you can run anywhere easily.

People use rubber gas lines for portable natural gas generators and outdoor gas grills.  In a shop, i would want black iron pipe.  If you need to tap into the main line, hire someone to do it, that way insurance company can't come back on you, if something should happen.
