If you had huge burls of wood, and a CNC machine... what would you make with them?

With my skills, I'd just end up making small burls of wood.

There was a tavern called The Sir George Grey Hotel in a small town named Tairua on the Coromandel Pensula of New Zealand where the entire bar serving area was one single huge piece of Kauri, it was amazingly beautiful. The Hotel has since been closed and demolished to make room for holiday homes unfortunately. I sometimes wonder what happened to that big piece of Kauri, and Eric, the guy who owned the hotel. Nice guy. Had some legendary nights (and days) partying at that bar over many summers.

I would make subwoofer flat-packs. They make a huge profit pre cutting MDF into smaller pieces to ship that you glue together. Throw some rabbet and dadoes on them along with some "A-A" "B-B" printed/sprayed on the ends to make it idiot proof and you could make a killing...

nothing like cutting titanium.  Its wood.  my machine can cut steel with ease.

So far all I plan to make are knife scales or handles.  I did however make some stabilized wooden burl rings.  They look like marble.

gun stocks & speaker boxes are a bit large for these burls, but something like 1911 handles are easy enough.  I do have some larger burls, but still, gun stocks are a bit large.  think perhaps shoebox size and under.

I would really like a wood pistol grip for my AR-15, I think that would be worth 55 bucks for an oak handle.

Another cool thing would be flush in-wall iPad docks.
We order from a company that makes this product ( from MDF) and they charge 750-1000 bucks per dock. They are pretty much the only company making high end docks that look nice, s they can charge that.
But its nice and can be painted over to match the room, it can also fit most iPads.
They do not include a charger, you still need to buy a PoE charger from another company for charging.

grips for knives or pistols are really nice.  stabilized.    There's no problem cutting burl on a wood lathe.   I've cut harder stuff like ebony.   a very sharp tool will cut nicely.  if you are doing pistol handles or knife handles, sanding is preferred to planing unless you have helical cutting heads that shear off the wood.

I think i am convinced to make some 1911 pistol grips. shame i dont own one, but perhaps i can find the specs for them?

they will be stablized, so they will be very durable. They should look incredible and each one will be unique.

well yes, that is about an average size.  I do have some larger, and obviously smaller.  Here is one example of a larger one:

How my girls are trying to move it, is exactly how I got it to move.  I drug it through the woods on a rope.  pulled about 4-5 ticks off me that day.  Earlier this week in fact.

But here is a small example of a wedding ring I made for myself:

I was thinking desert Iron wood for some reason, when ya said, "blurls"!

The first time, I ran the bandsaw in shop class "back in high school" , the teacher handed me a piece iron wood, not knowing you had to move slower running the wood through. The wood went flying across the shop, busted the blade, and busted the classroom glass, and the teacher was laughing his butt off for a good 10mins.

Later on, just to pove his point he ran the same piece of iron wood through the table saw and dulled the carbid teeth in a matter of secs.

That is a nice hunk of wood and can be turned into some beautiful things.  I am a carpenter, woodworker and cabinetmaker. If you have a lathe and if it's dry enough, you can turn it into something special.  Nice job on the ring by the way..

an ironwood burl will be the highlight of my burl collecting days. there is plenty of ironwood around the woods i walk around, but not a single burl.

i dont see wood destroying any of the machine tools i have. i have some wood blades, but i think its easier for a machinist to go to wood vs a carpenter going to machinist. but what do i know.

as for lathe work, i do own a 12x36 gunsmithing lathe, but nothing for wood.

i think i will look into the 1911 handles, there seemed to be enough interest, and i have PLENTY of burls.
