I am looking to upgrade to a 1080ti and then eventually to the 11 series whenever those come out. What should I get in terms of a psu so I am at least future proofed for 11 series. I dont need to worry about a psu that will last forever, but at least works with 1080ti and 11 series. Thanks!

Welcome to the forums.

Use the OuterVision Power Supply Calculator to estimate your system wattage requirement and see some recommended PSUs.

You can use the EVGA Power Meter, but it's not as detailed/precise..If you use it, you'll receive a 10% off EVGA Store discount (with conditions) in your email.

Make sure the unit has enough of the proper connectors that your system needs..Units with a single +12V rail are generally better..The fan in units with Hybrid/ECO Mode cooling won't turn on until a certain temperature, resulting in quiet operation during no/low load conditions..Fully modular units allow you to use only the cables you need, reducing cable clutter.

Your current PSU may be good, depending on what and how old it is.

Re: which power supply for a 1080ti? 2018/01/22 10:20:17 (permalink)
my current psu is 450w. Is that enough for 1080ti?

The EVGA page you linked seems to recommend a 650w psu. The outervision link said this:

Load Wattage: 353 W
Recommended UPS rating: 700 VA
Recommended PSU Wattage: 403 W

Which seems to suggest that my current 450w psu would work? If I could get by with my current psu and then upgrade only once I go to the 11 series that would be amazing. This is for VR gaming btw in case that changes anything. I play about 2-4 hours on a typical day.

sorry, you asked what and how old my current psu is. I purchased it in march 2017. It is "EVGA 450 BT, 80+ Bronze 450W, 3 Year Warranty, Power Supply 100-BT-0450-K1"

Your PSU should probably be okay..EVGA does recommend a minimum of a 600W unit for a GTX 1080 Ti iCX GAMING (if that's the one you're talking about) though, but it's just a general recommendation..I'd go with something with more watts so that it's not running so close to the maximum power output and make more heat and noise..I'd grab at least a 500W or 550W unit which would be good without going overkill..But as it stands now, you shouldn't really have to get another PSU..Keep what you have now if you want to and see how it rolls.

thanks bob, you have been very helpful. I'll give it a go with my current psu. worse case is that I notice it gets hot and noisy. best case, I save ~$100 and can upgrade my psu in 5 years or so, which would be killer!!

Thanks again!

The metal juice box that says 650w will do just fine and make sure it says gold or something cause that mean is good :)

I am a firm believer in not cheaping out on $1000's of PC parts by using a "MEH' power supply to deliver clean, dependable power to all the parts inside.

for your 1080xx card , I wouldn't go anything less than a 650 Gold....    but that's me.

Once you get a taste of the beauty that is the world through the eyes of a 1080ti, you may want more...

So get a 1600 Titanium like I did. You will completely anti-regret it. It's the last power supply you will need for the whole TEN YEAR WARRANTY PERIOD. Plus, over time it's outstanding efficiency saves you money every single time you turn it on.

Sounds like a win-win, yes?

My choice for GTX1080Ti...

https://www.evga.com/products/product.aspx?pn=220-G3-0750-X1

But for me I would bought 1000 T2 or minimum EVGA 850 P2.
Below 850 P2 I would not even think on high end PC with GTX1080Ti.
Because 850 P2 will not die even if you connect two of them.
Every scenario must be consider, maybe price of Radeon GPU drop and CF become very affordable, 850 P2 could hold two Vega 64 or two GTX1080Ti.

Because price is similar and size is almost same I would serious think between 850 P2 and 1000 PS.
In this situation I would use 850 P2 because I have cables for him and I will stay with future generations T2.
Cables are nice but in Europe significant investment and I will not pay 100 euro for cables for other models.
And guys who buy Sleeve Cables and PSU should consider some model for longer period. 5-7 years.
I will sell mine for 1-2 years and change for 1000 T2. First 5 years is best period of PSU.
But with these new models I don't expect to significant number of samples die before 11-12 years of usage.
There is still people who use CORSAIR TX from 2006-2007, these power supplies are far more advanced and better quality because in that time people didn't pay attention on PSU as last 5 years.

Way overkill for a single GPU build, but if it makes you happy

OP
Stability of your build should be the most important consideration and that requires a properly sized PSU of Quality construction.

You might be able to get by with the 450W for now. I would start keeping an eye out for a good deal on 650W 80Plus Gold or higher rated PSU.

EVGA 650W:
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 P2, 650W 80Plus PLATINUM  $130 (10yr Warranty)
EVGA SuperNOVA 650 G3, 650W 80 Plus Gold $110 (7yr Warranty)

SeaSonic 650W:
Seasonic SSR-650PD Flagship Prime Series 650W 80Plus Platinum $130 (12yr Warranty)
Seasonic SSR-650GD Flagship Prime Series 650W 80Plus Gold $101 (12yr Warranty)

If it was me, i would go with 80Plus Platinum rated PSU for the better efficiency rating.

Considering how efficient Gold and Platinum psus are you really don't need anything higher than a 800 watter in many high end builds nowadays. Not to mention high end video cards have gotten much more efficient themselves.

I agree, might be worth the investment now since power supply tech is least likely to change!

I would say a 660W Platinum should be good,...... depending on it's age and previous use.

It's a few years old but was used only for gaming, previously in my i5 haswell system then moved over to my newer rig with the 8700k.  Never really overclocked using it either

I personally recommend going a bit overkill on a PSU as it’s a part that quality matters on. Normally if you fallow EVGA on Facebook or check the website normally on Wednesday they post some good deals. I think last week it was the G3 850W for only $79 with free shipping for example which would be overkill for most single GPU builds.

Use an Associates Code & SAVE 5% - 10% on your purchase. Just click on the associates banner to save, or enter the associates code at checkout on your next purchase. If you choose to use my code I want to personally say "Thank You" for using it.
