Hi Folks,
 
Over the last few weeks I've been seeing an issue where my system freezes, games crash, BSOD and even the system just shutting off. During WOT (World of Tanks) it will popup a window saying my video card crashed and to restart the game. At first it was happening only in games but now is seems like it's just happening randomly - youtube, web browsing, games or pretty much doing nothing.
 
If I check the event viewer (System) it shows errors like below. 

The description for Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm cannot be found. Either the component that raises this event is not installed on your local computer or the installation is corrupted. You can install or repair the component on the local computer.
If the event originated on another computer, the display information had to be saved with the event.
The following information was included with the event:

System Specs:
CPU: AMD Ryzen 9 3900X with NZXT Kraken M22 120mm cooler
Video Card: EVGA RTX 2080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING (08G-P4-2287)
Motherboard Model: ASUS TUF GAMING X570-PLUS (WI-FI)
Memory: G.SKILL Ripjaws V Series 16GB (2 x 8GB) 288-Pin DDR4 SDRAM DDR4 3200 (PC4 25600) Desktop Memory Model F4-3200C16D-16GVKB
GPU: EVGA RTX 2080 FTW3 ULTRA GAMING (08G-P4-2287)
PSU: Corsair RM850
Nvidia Driver: 27.21.14.6140 (GeForce 461.40) (I've tried older drivers and same thing happens)
 
I've also thrown in my old GTX970 card and did not run into these issues at all (2 days worth of playing games, watching youtube, etc).

Is my 2080 dying on me, is it a driver issue, PSU issue?
 
Any and all help is greatly appreciated!

    These are one of those things I've read about for 10 years or more.  It seems like it is some generic error that could be anything & everything at all with about a 1000 'fixes' all across the internet with NO actual specific fix for everyone.

    turns out my 2080 card was bad. I switched my card to an intel board and cpu and ran into the same errors as I was seeing on my AMD board. I then put the 2080 in my daughter's computer and same errors. Picked up a 3070 and have had zero issues in my system.

    I've been having this same problem for the past month now and I've tried everything except wiping windows 10 which will be a pain in the ass since I have a ton of software that I use, but here is my Event viewer:

     Intermittently my screen keeps going black/blank for a moment (as if I were disconnect a monitor and reconnect) This has been happening recently about a month now and it keeps happening on and off when either working with multiple programs, watching a video online or gaming as it is extremely frustrating when it crashes randomly.. Then sometimes after it recovers from the blank screen there's a response lag when moving the mouse, considering all the system was running fine before and no major changes were done. Unfortunately I don't have another system to try this videocard in or substitute for another card.
     
    This has never happened before until a few weeks ago and now and it's driving me insane, I'm fairly knowledgeable in the tech industry since I've worked in IT and I'm tried of attempted all those fixes across google ranging back to 10 years including DDU the drivers completely from scratch and nothing in addition to installing the latest BIOS & Nvidia drivers with Studio and Gaming drivers with no results.

    I'll go into a little more detail on what I tried before finally deciding to grab a new video card to replace the 2080. I built my system about 1.5 yrs ago and it was running superbly until about 3 weeks ago when all those nvlddmkm started showing up.
     
    1. used DDU to remove drivers and install new ones -- no luck
    2. used DDU to remove drivers and install older drivers that folks had luck with -- no luck
    3. made sure no overclock was happening, made sure nothing was overheating -- no luck
    4. decided to re-install windows 10 (home edition) -- no luck
    5. at this time I also upgraded to windows 10 pro -- no luck
    6. has an old gtx970 lying around - put that in and has zero issues while running that card -- SUCCESS
    7. figured it might be power related since I know my PSU was about 7 yrs old so I bought a new PSU 850w and installed that -- no luck
    8. said to hell with it and bought an Intel I5 10600k and mobo and put the 2080 in that system and it still produced those errors -- no luck
    9. took the 2080 and swapped that in my daughter's system and within 30m of doing that started seeing all those nvlddmkm errors -- no luck
    10. at this time I went to my local microcenter and luckily they had a bunch of 3070's and 3090's in-stock even though their website said they were out of stock
          and installed that. I've been now running for close to 24 hrs without an issue. -- SUCCESS
    11. I took the back plate off my 2080 cuz I noticed a darker spot than others on the back of the card - it looked almost wet and it was dark around a lot of the chips on the back of the card. I don't know what happened but my 2080 ended up in the trash bin.
    12. also forgot to mention I tried other things with power options in windows 10 (high performance, etc) and that all failed -- no luck

     
    As you can tell I essentially built and entire new system (only thing I didn't replace was the memory and hard drives) and it all came down to a faulty/bad GPU.
     
    Not sure this helps you or not but thought I should go into detail on everything I tried to get this working.

    Wow that's impressive! that's a ton of troubleshooting and money spent! I can't even imagine how many hours you poured into that and thanks for that additional information that's a time saver but not only for me, but for other people as I've heard owners with similar videocards are having similar problems, perhaps we got a bad batch of card since they were the first ones. ( From what you mentioned it definitely sounds like a bad videocard after trying it with different hardware )
     
    I've also read other people installing windows with no luck as the problem continues  I might consider going to microcenter in Tustin and see if I can try a different card in my system, but anyhow thank you soo much for your response. Strange thing that you mentioned in 11 that but I also have that same spot ****

    it was definitely a lot of time and money for sure but hopefully this helps out folks like yourself in troubleshooting things faster and getting to a resolution since that's what we all want.
     
    One thing I want to point out here is that I'm not saying everyone's cards are bad and they need a new one but with my extensive testing of software/drivers and replacing hardware and swapping systems, etc led me to the conclusion my 2080 was having issues. Then seeing the dark spots on the card and tearing it apart convinced me even more.

    I also have the same situation. I tried different options as well as you. Many times tried to re-install windows 10 Pro from version 1709 to 20H2.
    Last time decided to not install ASUS Armory Crate which Windows immediately after installation offered.
    And now the problem (Event ID 14 from source nvlddmkm) is missing.

    I'm having the exact same problem with my system right now with the same card. Also have the same spot on the back plate of my card




    Forgot to update this thread but this has been solved. It wasn't the videocard that was giving me problems, and those spots of oil are the thermal pads as they leak after some time and it's normal according to the internet.

    I posted the solution on various forum threads and I also posted:

    This has been solved in various forums, just contributing my solutions to enough threads so mods can pick it up and add it to their troubleshooting steps for people.
     
    A. Disable your RGB software that interacts with your videocard like armory crate videocard rgb, precision, corsair icue etc.
    B. Separate your connected hardware on Different electrical outlet sockets <- important, even if it means running an extension cord to another room or changing your power plugs on different surge protector
    C. Reset your windows power plan, update your windows 10 and update your motherboard bios.
     
     One of those solutions ^ will fix your problem as this is related to:
    black screen
    random signal loss
    random display driver crashing
    display turns off and on
    game crashing
    Event ID 14 "nvlddmkm"

     Glad that worked for you!  it's the armory crate RGB software that is causing problems. Spread the solution if anyone else has this problems

    I just uninstalled the armory crate and it happened a few minutes afterwards. Am I going to have to do a fresh windows install? I just reinstalled windows because the black screen started giving me the blue screen of death reboot with VIDEO_MEMORY_MANAGEMENT_INTERNAL error code. Reinstalling windows fixed the blue screen issue but periodically I'm still having the black screen problem, like the computer is going to sleep for an instance. I've also gotten the event ID 14 source nvlddmkm in the log when this happens

    So to update this, I reinstalled armory crate and deselected the gpu on the rgb controller. So far the nvlddmkm error hasn't came back yet. The system has been on for a few hours on youtube. About to test it out gaming but I think it is fixed.

I'm the type of person that likes to know "why" something is happening so if anybody could help me understand this a little better, it would be much appreciated. I know I also have evga precision x1 installed on my computer also which can control the rgb on the gpu. Would that be the problem? 2 different programs trying to send voltage to the rgb lights at the same time causing the gpu to go haywire? I noticed when I had the armory crate rgb controller selected to control my gpu, anytime I opened precision x1 the screen would automatically go black as soon as I would click to open the app. It would also do it as soon as I closed precision x1

     Glad you got it solved.  Yup, exactly right--anytime you have 2 or more chunks of different code attempting to access and/or utilize/modify the same resources, it's a problem as one or more of them is(are) going to either generate errors or screw up what the other(s) were trying to accomplish or both.  Kind of like 2 or more kids fighting over the same toy or snack---the outcome can be unpredictable, but is never good!
