In that same vein, intel sells so many CPUs to non-enthusiasts that it doesn't make much sense to put out the effort to neuter them just so we can't overclock them.

The "CPU Strap" Profiles are locked, but you can help us, to show us why!

Please download HwInfo32 v3.92, Build 1520 (Added support of Intel Integrated Clock Control (ICC): reporting of clock capabilities and monitoring of actual status.) AND show us the ICC Profiles from your E5 ES Sample.

Mainboard -> Intel ME -> Intel ICC (Intel HECI/ME Driver must be installed)

I like this board a lot but when will there be news about a possible release date?

That 6-core CPU-Z shot is an Engineering Sample i7 3960X. Multipliers, cache sizes, core count all match the 3960X. It could also be an E5-1660, which is not a 2-way capable part.

Check the codename. It's a Sandy Bridge-EP/EX, which means it has to be either an E5-1660 or an E5-2600 that hasn't been announced :)

Asus Maximus IV Gene-Z
i7-2700K @ 5 GHz (water cooled)
8 GB Kingston HyperX @ 2133
GTX 570 SC (975/1950/2400 @ 1.1V fully stable and folding)
1000W CoolerMaster Silent Pro Gold (single 12V rail)
2 * OCZ Vertex3 in RAID 0

More than likely, that's an E5-1660.

I have these available for use in a new system: G.Skill RipjawsZ F3-10666CL9Q2-64GBZL (8Gx8)
any chance they would be supported?

The i7-3800 and i7-3900 have the same -EP/-EX subcodename because they use the LGA2011 socket.  The only other subcodename is -EN, but that's for LGA1356.

For Intel processors, 0.122 x TDP = Continuous Amps at 12v [source].

Normally I'd say that would be bad for a board this size that already is challenging to fit in a case.. but it has the SAS connectors right angled anyways.

I have never seen vertical SAS connectors unless they are attached to a vertical PCB. The cable coming out of the SAS port is more flexible than the garden hose that is the 24 pin loom.

yah, I am sure because of the width of this board they decided to keep vertical to save that inch or so. might make a big diferance for some cases to fit or not.

Yup, but using the SAS connectors are optional in a way... 24pin is mandatory. Plus the SAS connectors are a bit more flexible. Right angled 24pin would extend the PCB about 1-2 more inches out.

Hmm, can't seem to find any info on this?  Anyone seen any specs?  Other than the generic specs in the product title.  Overclockable?  Or just a WS board?

Edit:  Answered my own question: http://www.techpowerup.com/158373/ASUS-Dual-Socket-LGA2011-Motherboard-Pictured.html.  Seems like it is a WS only board, but still worth taking a look at.

see guys what i found

http://www.lambda-tek.com/BX80621E52620-Intel-2-30GHZ-E5-2620-XEON-PROCESSOR-6-CORE~cs/B838087&origin=skinflint10.9

This has me interested especially as they are quite cheap. Tray price is meant to be $406. Usually the conversion itno GBP/EUR is 1:1 :/

However I thought the E5 2620 was meant to be a 2.0Ghz chip?

If you check XS news section you will find the ASUS board has many overclocking features within the bios. Including multiplier and BLK strap adjustment. But NO cpu so far supports them!!!

This link explains abit more:

Re:eVGA SR-X (SR-3) 2012/02/27 05:39:09 (permalink)
I have this information for you all:

I have contacted the distributor of the item and they have advised me that this item is currently available. They also added:

"They are boxed processors and the description for it is 2.30GHZ E5-2620 XEON PROCESSOR 6 CORE"

I am afraid this is all the information we were provided with ourselves.

I hope this helps!

Kind regards,

Lambda-Tek Sales Team

So maybe the E5-2620 is indeed a 2.30Ghz chip & the release specs we have seen so far are wrong? (E.g. not 2.0Ghz for the E5-2620).
