Not purchasing any .22 as i already have 3 rifles with that caliber out at my rents house and btw i reside in pa so the laws are kind of lax i guess. I did consider the tarus revolver but it would have to be double action and def not a 357 lol. I think I will just venture down to my local gunshop in town and look around like yall mentioned. As for all the guns you listed I will keep the brands and models in mind. Also I do plan on buying a mossenburg pump action with a full stock at some point.

Maybe i'm reaching a bit I'm thinking I'd have the same caliber as my friends. If/When tsfhtf, you wont be able to run down and stock up on ammo. If you and your allies use the same ammo, you can share so you can keep those hammers a'movin and heads a'splatterin. For instance, in my case, when my Makarov is out of 9x18, it's out. 9x19(luger/parabellum) is a much easier caliber to acquire. It fits and fires but wont chamber the next round from the magazine(saw it on the U-tube, I aint tryin it).

If your wanting home defense definitely stick with pistol(control factor is good) or a shotgun. I own 2 pistols and an AR-15. Ive thought about using the AR as home defense but doing some reading,over-penetration is a little bit of a factor when it comes to using rifles. Pistols can still be a little bit BUT easier to control in situations. I plan on getting a shotgun at some point but my Glock 22( .40 S&W ) is my trusty go to for home defense right now.

Small tip...

Gun quality is like cars. Quick example, small gathering...

Yugo = Diamond Backs
Ford Pinto / Chevy Chevette = Kel-Tec
For Mustang / Chevy Camero =Ruger / Taurus / Glock
Mid Grade Family car = Smith & Wesson / Springfield / Glock
High end Toyota/Honda mid grade Lexus/Infinty = Sig - FNP
High end Lexus/Infinty/Cadilac (Newer Cadi's) = Kimber
Stupid High end = Customized to your needs and you would not be needing any advice form Computer Enthusiasts...

I'm not a pistol fan, at least not what is legally obtainable in my area.  AK pistols, Tec9s, or Ingrams would definitely interest me.  In general, I do not like  a weapon that can be pointed at my own face.  I know I wouldn't look directly into my own handgun, but it being impossible with rifles brings me comfort.  Silly, I know, but we all have our own rules.

I might argue some of those with you, especially S&W now that theyve been back in American hands for a few years, but its all personal preference. To me, different situations call for different firearms. Also, Im that weird gun nut that likes to have certain weapons to suit my "mood" for the day. One of the smoothest and nicest pistols Ive ever fired was a Tokarev, the most kick? a S&W500 hands down, The most power tempered by your ability to hold it up for more than 30 seconds AND it doesnt try to give you a black eye? Colt Python.

For home defense I prefer shotguns. The sound of a shell being racked is intimidating enough plus the last thing you want to do is miss and have a round go through the sheetrock and hit your kid or family member. The best target "plinkers" will miss 90% of the time in a "stress shoot" scenario.

And there you have it. It was just meant as an idea or reference for those getting into this hobby. Relax. Anyone can have their own view or line up. This is not a measuring tool. It is ONLY to help those understand what I mean about guns being like cars. There are a heck of a lot more "levels" of cars and guns. I did say "Quick example, small gathering... ".

My opinion or your opinion does not matter.

The point was simple, Gun quality means a lot of different things. Parts availability, craftsmanship, reliability, design, intended usage, accuracy, usability, cost to maintain, etc.  Where in "Quality" does it say anything about a "Kick"?...

Now back on the subject at hand...

That my friends is why the best thing to do is to go back and read my post in this thread earlier (#6). Anything else just causes discussions like those above.

P.S.   One of my friends that lives two doors down from me has five full sized safes bolted to his floor "Full" of many different types, models and abilities... I have had the pleasure of cleaning many after use, and have a "personal" idea of what I like. Not to mention my thousands of hours of training/practice over the years... My favorite is still the Bow and Arrow as a kid... That does not and should not mean that my opinion on this matter should be anyone else's. Frankly I think you all should have your own. That is what makes this hobby so unique. The amount of personalization is endless.

I wasnt criticizing you AB, hopefully it didnt come across that way. Merely playful banter. I enjoy talking about guns more than I enjoy talking about computer hardware, even. I know kick has nothing to do with quality. Actually Im pretty sure I started rambling, I dont even remember what my point was supposed to be, lol.

To the OP, the advice above about trying out a lot of guns is very good. Let me refine this for you, though. If the pistol is being bought for defensive purposes, it will most often be used in stressful circumstances and you will never actually see the sights. It will either be too dark or happen too fast. It is, therefore, very important that the gun fit your hand and naturally point where you want it to point. Grip angle can play a big part in this. The grip angles of various pistols are:
Ruger 22/45 at 106 degrees
G19 at 111 degrees and Luger P08 at 125 degrees
XD9 at 105 degrees and P38 at 104 degrees
Sig 228 at 106 degrees and Colt 1911 at 107 degrees
Any grip angle may be best for anyone and many show little difference with the exception of the Glock and the Luger. (Revolvers are closer to Glock).

The important thing to do is point at the target with your eyes closed and then see where the sights line up. Then pick the one that has the best feel.

Also of top importance is to figure into the purchase price about 1000 rounds of ammunition. That is how many rounds you should fire though the pistol to really know if it functions and be sure you are comfortable with how it handles. Otherwise you are more likely to shoot your neighbor through about 3 walls than an attacker.

^^^ Good advice. I would also add... Night Sights are required... Just trust me on that... We actually enjoy the newer laser grips as well. You hit where the light hits...

I have or have owned/shot about everything out there , I have a 1300$ 1911 kimber(granted its an ultra carry 2 so its light and 3 inch barrel=less accurate) and my buddies Springfield XD-M 9MM was the most user friendly , accurate (20 rounds get a 4" group or better not bad for me for that caliber), dependable , clip size , price for how it preformed its the best gun I've ever shot . I have/had everything from a 50. cal brush Chrome eagle to a walther 22.

got the night sights and a crimson trace grip so at night or 10 meters I prefer my kimber Ultra 2, but for clip size , and time from draw to get on point XD-M was still still has a hell of a lead in user freindly-ness . It was the full length barrel XD-M 9 , i think 5.25
