Got that damn "E74" error message with the 1 "red ring" on the lower right corner. My Son comes in and tells me there's a red light with that error message. I'm like, oh no! I told him the Xbox 360 got a hardware failure. I submitted a repair request. It said to call them via telephone. I will do that tomorrow. Hoping it wouldn't happen to us, but it did, unfortunately.

*EDIT: Updated to show it lasted 4 years, not 3. "My mistake". (Three year warranty ended 3/09)

They tried to fix the issue with the elite by positioning the fans differently and making a smaller processor but they still failed with the design because the heat still gets to the board and warps it.

dude you should go my route. i just had a surge protector take out my xbox and now i am stuck in what do i do i can not find a place that will tell me on paper that my xbox is busted. so that the surge protector will replace it. so i know how it is. i guess i will just have to buy a new one but you might think about the idea of water cooling the xbox. if i can not get anything done then the next one i buy is water cooled.

That's a good idea. Let's see if they fix it for free when I call them tomorrow. I read on the internet that they were repairing these failures for free. I will find out tomorrow. I will update this thread as things develope.

Most good surge protectors have a warranty for connected equipment up to a certain value eg a guy came into a shop I worked in as a tech and he had to ring a special number and they replaced his TV Computer it got hit by lighting so it totally destroyed the surge protector. It was a belkin titanium series from memory pretty hardcore surge UPS combined unit.

UPDATE:  I went through the repair request process online, and I printed out the shipping label. It didn't work last night, but it worked just now. Looks like I got lucky, and they are going to fix it for free. I guess Microsoft has a automatic warranty extension for the red ring of death. I just need to box it up, put on the shipping label, then go down to the UPS store. Takes about 3 weeks to repair. So the family, especially my Son, are very happy we can get it fixed at no charge. Yay!

if your son is a hardcore xbox gamer maybe you should water cool your xbox.

i dunno but it is only a matter of time before it is heat.

but looking back on it. xbox is only 199 now so it would not pay to cool it.

i just had a surge protector take out my xbox....

I have a question.  Was it just a surge protector, or was it a surge protector with battery back-up?  I'm just curious.

My original Xbox v1.0 is still going strong and it's been used steady since 2001.  It's pretty much been retired for my uses but it now stores all of my daughters movies, and has been modded so the dashboard has a simple interface so she can just scroll through the movies and pick the one she wants to watch.  It's got a 250gb HDD, and a 120mm coolermaster fan that replaced the original......took a little dremel work but I made it fit.

It has been a tank.  I wish Microsoft had made the 360 as robust as the original.  Nobody I know has broken their Xbox........the 360 on the other hand.

I was surprised that they are going to fix it for free, even though it's 1 year out of warranty.  Good job Microsoft.

Slapping the guts of the 360 inside this monstrosity should do the trick.

Dude good luck getting it back.

I sent out my Elite for the three ring of death error, and it took them three months to send it back to me.

The the cause of the failures is that they get very hot, and if you just shut them off after a long game, they cool to fast causing the solder to come loose.

So i think if you let them run for a few minutes before shutdown,to cool them a bit, they be fine.

They told me over the phone that it will be back to me in 2-3 weeks. I hope your problem with that was just an isolated incident. Also thanks for the tip on letting it cool down before turning it off. I will make sure my Son knows that too!
