I had 6GB (2*3) installed. I took out these DIMMs and replaced them with 4GB DIMMs for a total of 12GB. When I powered up again, the BIOS only saw 8GB. It seems there is an issue with the middle DIMM slot. In XP32, Speccy did find all 3 DIMMs and reported 12GB physical RAM. (Yes, I know XP32 can't actually use 12GB.) So I know the middle slot is not dead. Going into Linux x64, only 8GB is seen. (I have not tried the mem kernel parameter.) Does something need to be done for >8GB to be usable?

Ensure that you have the corrects timings, frequency, and voltage set in the BIOS.

The RAM is DDR3 1600 1.5V 8-8-8-24. The only thing I needed to correct was the T-RAS (auto had it at 20). BIOS is 08/25/2011. I still have only 8GB seen.

What voltage and timing are you running them at? According the the data sheet.... DDR3-1600 at a low latency timing of 9-9-9-27 at 1.65V. or JEDEC standard latency DDR3-1600 timing of 11-11-11 at 1.5V Just for testing, try running at 10-10-10-27 at 1.65v.

Try matching up your target cpu frequency with your cpu uncore. You also need to raise VTT Start with 175mv. Mine takes 250 to be stable with 12 gigs.
