So correct me if I am wrong but I can reuse the OEM key on a new computer if I call up Microsoft, right? If I am able to do that with my current key then I just saved myself from blowing another chunk of change on a new copy of Win7.

Your wording is off a bit. Do you mean the old computer parts will no longer be associated with that Win 7 key and you're just using new parts? You can't use the key concurrently on who machines.

I meant if I build a new system wouldn't I be able to reuse the current key I have and call up Microsoft to let them know? The reason I am asking is because that could save me 130-140 bucks in buying another copy of Win7Pro OEM. Cash that could go towards other better parts.

IIRC you aren't technically supposed to, but if you say you're reinstalling because of damaged/replaced hardware they might activate it for you. Generally you'd want it to be the same mobo model. Here's a thread about it from Tom's Hardware: http://www.tomshardware.c...stall-windows-computer

This pretty much sums it up I think:

    Comrade58   02-28-2010 at 04:12:31 AM

I've moved OEM copies of XP and Vista to new computers that I've built.

When you get to the activation step, you're prompted to call MS. Sometimes I've gotten an automated system and other times I've gotten a live rep.

I explain that I've either had to replace the MB or that I've built a new computer and disassembled the old one. If dealing with the automated system, the main question to listen for is when it asks how many computers this copy of Windows will be installed on. You have to answer 'One'.

I've never been refused an activation. I've always been honest and told them I'm either upgrading or building a new computer and that the old one has been disassembled and some of the parts sold on Ebay and some used in the new computer.

I haven't tried it yet with Win 7, and I know that although the EULA on all OEM copies technically ties it to just one MB, I've never been refused a re-activation. If you had bought a computer from, say.., Dell..., they wouldn't refuse an activation if you had to replace a defective MB.

As I said, I'm always honest about what I'm doing and don't try to install it on more than one computer at a time. They've always been helpful..., (so far).

The fact that an opinion has been widely held is no evidence whatever that it is not utterly absurd.

The distinction is you need to make is it's not a new computer, but a rebuild. So, not a single part is going to be of the existing one?

Hmm I am hoping to be able to if I can with a entirely new motherboard cause I don't want to be spending another chunk of change on Win7. The video card and dvd drive will most definitely be reused. Not entirely sure about my secondary drive. As for my primary ssd will be sticking to Mushkin for either a 60 or 80 gig os drive.

I've swapped processors and mobos and used same key. The distinction is it's an upgrade of a single computer, not an altogether new one.

OEM Key is used for the computer it was originally installed on according to the "Microsoft's" rules.  You can install it on a new computer though as long as you just use it on one computer.

Is the key going to be used ever again on the old mobo?

Is the key going to be used ever again on the old mobo?

Once I build the new computer and spend a week making sure everything is 110% stable the old computer will be put in storage so no the old motherboard won't be used anymore at that point.

Edit: By the way the reason I asked this is because I am looking at spending max 1K for a new computer so I need to look for ways to save money on things I don't need and put that extra cash towards components that I do need.

Its all in the wording one computer.... just answer the question one computer and you can use your key.

Ah good then. That means I can save some cash and put it towards more useful parts. I already saved money by winning the EVGA cooler. Now I saved money by NOT buying another useless copy of Win7 Pro OEM. It would of cost me roughly 180 to snag another copy of Win7, the Hyper 212+ and a second fan for it however I saved myself from doing that. Hmm now I can probably get a better case and a bigger SSD for my main. I should hit up NewEgg and see what I can truly get now that I saved some money again.

Normaly it is just a simple phone call to microsoft and tell them that you upgraded some hardware or replaced it due to whatever reason.

Heck most people think that if its in the same case it is still the same computer. lol.

Anyways i have had to call them once before, I guess swaping my video card and HD was to much change so it made me reactive my key. IT was not much trouble at all...

    On a side note...

I gave my copy of Vista Ultimate away to a whole new computer and it didnt ask for anything at all. Just installed and worked fine.

Well so far I have saved 180-190 bucks now. Which is GREAT when set for max 1K budget wise. No need for a new copy of Win7 or cpu cooler. Now if I win a EVGA board that's even more money saved.
