I’m thinking of possibly purchasing this in the next few weeks to replace my ancient Titanium HD and also get a new headset and I’m curious to see what everyone has used with this new sound card and how it performed. What ohm rating, what microphone you use for those without one attached, etc. I currently have an old Turtle Beach gaming headset and have my eye on the Beyerdynamic DT900 Premium 600 ohm and saw that EVGATech_LeeM said he uses these as well. Thanks in advance for all your helpful input.

None, I use a Sound Bar.
But did test with Bounty Hunter HEAD-PL Metal Detector Headphones and another cheap pair sounded fine on both

Tried mine with HD650s, K712pro, DT770 250ohm and Mad Dog 3.2s (Fostex t50rp) and it's had no difficulties driving any of them. :)

The list of my own that I've tested with the NU Audio Card.  Keep in mind that these are my own subjective impressions.  Also keep in mind that if you purchase headphones on anyone's recommendations, it may take several listens or dozens of hours of listening before you get used to a new headphone:

  • Focal Elear (80 ohms) - My default for everything, right now.  Very fast, fun, and makes music very enjoyable. Everything feels like it just flows from one note to the next.  Not strong in the sub-bass area, but does something to the mid-bass up to the upper mids that can't be legal in most states (or at least at its price point).  It will never be considered a neutral or reference headphone, but, then again, it was never meant to be.   Might be slightly heavy and too much clamping for some, but well-balanced and comfortable enough for me to wear a long time while listening or gaming.
  • beyerdynamic DT 990 Premium Edition (600 ohms) - Stopped using these as much once I got the Elears, but great for gaming (very good, but not great, positioning, and works well for virtual surround).  As with most beyerdynamic headphones, these are extremely comfortable and you'd expect them to be lighter than they actually are.  These are generally around $200 or so on Amazon lately, and are really good all-rounders for a variety of purposes.
  • Sennheiser GSP 600 (28 ohms) - Excellent positioning and excellent mic performance.  Exceptional isolation, and seems to be built solidly for gaming purposes.  Definitely seems to lack something (to me) when it comes to music, but I might just need to listen to them a little more critically.
  • AKG K702 Anniversary Limited Edition (62 ohms) - Hard to find anymore, but does everything well, but not perfect at anything.  Much better for music genres that appreciate a more laid-back approach.  Otherwise, good for gaming, good for music, good for shows/movies, but could use a slightly wider soundstage.

We received some samples from audio-technica and Audeze that I've tested, including:

  • Audeze LCD2 Closed-Back (70 ohms) - Great case-study compared to the Elears.  As someone described to me, "If the Elears are like water, the LCD2 Closed backs are like butter". What they meant is that whereas the Elears flow from one note to the next, the LC2 CB's give you a rich performance and let you savor it for a bit.  Good separation, good soundstage.  It almost makes you forget that you're listening to a closed back pair of headphones, if you're used to the soundstage of an open-back.  Solid bass.  For gaming, these are great if you want to be fully immersed in the action or story.  Positioning is OK, but I don't recall it standing out for being either great or bad at locating shots, so it's OK.
    • *These are the headphones that we used to demo the NU Audio Card at CES, and pair quite well with the NU Audio card.
  • audio-technica ATH-A1000Z (44 ohms) - Exceptionally light. Earcups may be slightly small for some, but very comfortable (for me).  Performance is also excellent.  Tends to be a reference sound, and does it well.  Good separation, airy, but a moderate amount of controlled bass that can surprise you at times.  Great soundstage.  However, this amount of bass also gives vocals or strings this space to really "wow" you.  I haven't tested gaming with it yet, but I'm really curious to see how well it performs.  If you're looking for a solid set of closed headphones, these ones are a very good choice for a wide-variety of uses and genres.

We have more headphones from those two brands, and will have some sort of "compatibility" list in the near future for people interested in some higher quality headphones/headsets.

I use the Beyerdynamic T1 2nd gen audiophile headphones and let me tell you.  With all application audio forced at 100%, I have to keep the OS audio at 30 or below, or I risk losing all my hearing!  The drive of this card is legit.  Eliminates the need for my Beyerdynamic A20 headphone amplifier for my main gaming PC.

Excellent headphones.  I used these a few years ago before I went with a T1 + Shure SM7B setup.

I've been looking at those lately, but I'm trying to hold off and save up for something a bit on the higher-end, though.

It's just an excellent performer for the price. I'm eying a Focal Stellia for a future purchase. Waiting on some detailed reviews on it to pass the time. You might want to check it out.

I have some Elear's, so I'm already partial to the Focal sound, for sure.  I'm probably looking for something with a wider soundstage for gaming, however, which probably omits most closed-backs, unfortunately.  On the other hand, I should probably get a good pair of closed-backs at some point. *sigh*.  This is a rough hobby.

Mass Drop Sennheiser HD6XX.  They are identical drivers to the $400-$500 HD650's for only $199.  300 Ohm impedance.  Sound WONDERFUL.  The internal amp claims to drive 300ohms, which granted, it can, but on full tilt just dosen't get them quite as clear and loud as a mid to high end external headphone amp

Re: What headphones are you using with the Nu Audio? 2019/03/20 16:27:16 (permalink)
I ended up finding a good deal on the Beyerdynamic MMX 300 Gen 2 so I went with those as I preferred to have a headset built in mic vs attaching another like the modmic (another cable hanging down) or an on desk mic (another object on my desk). I did notice, as I saw a mention in an online review about burning them in, that they sounded better after letting them play for 4 hours while I did family/house stuff when I got them. Even more so on day 2 when I did the same. In all, they sound great. I`ve heard sounds and instruments that I never heard before on my Turtle Beach Z22. The soundstage is so much better. Pretty comfortable too. The clamp is just right for me (not too hard or too soft) and the build is high quality. Overall, a little expensive but worth it.

I first used the Focal Clear for about 75% of the first couple months. The other 25% was with the MrSpeakers Aeon Flow (Open AND Closed), and the Sennheiser HD600. Lately though I've been using the Nu Audio with a new couple of pairs I picked up a couple of weeks ago: The Takstar Pro 82 and the new "generation" of that headphone from Cooler Master, the MH751. Was finally able to tell the difference between the speaker and headphone outputs that I wasn't able to really tell on the Focal Clear. Funny isn't it?

And before you say anything...yes I think these cheapo headphones are the real deal. Although some (dis)assembly is required.

Audio Technica ATH-AG1X I'm using a Schitt Magni that I use for an amp since I've grown used to using it as my volume knob since I had the ATH-AG1 until the ear cup yokes broke and I was not going to deal with replacing them on my own again. My biggest complaint with the Nu Audio card is the mic gain is really high for this microphone which I have an additional 6 foot extension on to match the length of the cable going to the Magni. The improvement from my Soundblaster Z was mind blowing, I wasn't expecting it to improve so much.

I used to use my V-Moda Crossfade M-100s, great sound quality, but they'd get sweaty and a little uncomfortable during longer gaming sessions.

Switched to a pair of Steelseries Arctis Pro headphones & they sound OK, but are very comfortable, hardly feels like I'm wearing anything.

I'm using a set of Shure SE846 IEMs (9-16ohm)...they're so easy to drive I use an inline attenuator to make sure I don't blow out my eardrums if I accidentally turn the volume way up.

Sometimes I put ear protection earmuffs on over my IEMs for maximum immersion, the only issue being that I can hear almost literally nothing of the outside world. The isolation is -intense-.

The combination of high quality IEM and near top of the line sound card makes music, movies, and games sound great. Unfortunately, it also makes it painfully obvious when you're listening to a poor quality rip or recording.

Oppo PM3's

With headphone volume at 65%
Master volume anywhere between 15-20%

These really sing with more Ohm's, the best I've heard them tbh. I've only got the Oppo HA 2 Dac or my home hi-fi Pioneer A30 Amp to compare with but yeah, the best they have ever sounded.

 Phillips Fidelio X2

Same Settings as the PM3's, Also sound the best I've heard them

I have the same setup. I haven't used my A-20 for some time now. But the T1 2nd Gen sounds great on the Nu-Audio. My old DT-880 Pro do not sound bad either.
